No the driver seems slightly renamed in the PPA .. 'nvidia-304' not 'nvidia-driver-304'

See my last response :)

Does "bionic" need to appear in the first code line you provided?

Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

So now it seems he will only need the complete sequence of the 3 Terminal command codes to complete his nvidia set up.

No, those instructions from the PPA won't work in bionic (missing xorg-video-abi-1*  dependency errors) .. hence why I posted to hang on a bit whilst I do some homework on the matter ;)

I'm currently looking into the patch mentioned here
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2396263&p=13784593#post13784593

I'll post when I've tested the nvidia 304 drivers build properly against the 5.0 kernel after being patched.
(but I have to test this in a VM so I don't bork my own system .. so I may be a while)

[EDIT]

Seems I **may** need to look into modifying the patch for the 5.0 kernel series in PM10 .. though it may work 'as is' in PM9

I could be all wet here but it looks to me that a nvidia "patch" is needed before the actual driver can be downloaded and applied, i dont use nvidia but this seems awfully familiar to me. Something my "mentor' taught me about but have forgotten as regards nvidia old drivers in new kernels etc.

Its a "bootstrap" to "bionic" to newest kernels etc.

Hey there 151tom, This guy Mr. Mark Greaves is a real trooper just like my "mentor" told me he was.
we kept communicating with each other through out.

I "Think" that Mark was reading my additions as my memory was being "pricked" and "kicked" as to the fact my "mentor" DID tell me over the past 2 yrs that nvidia was a "strange animal", but do not know for certain that Mark was reading them in real time and responding through the EDIT updates that erased and superceeded the previous EDITS except he kept ammending his "EDITS" that i kept replying to.

I only remembered enough of my teaching that a "patch" needed to be applied first as a bootstrap, to bionic to newest kernels in order for old nvidia driver to work with the newest kernels.

Mark "just knew" where to go from there, I did not.

He would keep on adjusting his "edits" to the next, newest, edit as he progressed, (Iguess this forum does not retain all edits but only the latest one offered) I was remembering things i was being taught over the last 2 years and was hoping he was reading what i remembered being taught and then believing he was looking for it, hopeing i was being in a small way of help to you both.

If this just all worked the way i think i just saw it, then I'm just in awe of how this forum can really work.

There is NO OTHER FORUM in Linux I have EVER seen that the GUY in CHARGE and responsible for, and to, the final product , is EVER this kind of responsible HANDS ON GUY to his "end user"/"base users".

It took my Linux Mentor 2 years to convince me to even join a forum for my further education and he was determined it was to be here, NOW i see why.

This guy, MR. Mark Greaves, IS THE BEST, and somehow my "mentor" already knew this was the case.

Warmest Regards to you,

The Omen

WOW OH WOW, there is NO WAY IN HELL I've seen this in any other of the Forums I have looked at for 2 yrs

Nope I've tried but can't get this to build in PM10, the patch applies but the nvidia-304 driver then refuses to build properly :(

Seems the best option might be to install PM9 then the patched nvidia-304, then manually upgrade PM9 to PM10 without adding the HWE.

I'm not being negative although I kinda figured it wasn't going to work out as I've just never had good results with Nvidia graphics drivers using Ubuntu 18.04 or Ubuntu 18.04 based / built distros using the old Nvidia graphics cards I have.

I appreciate your time and effort you've put into trying to make it work and and unfortunately some computers and hardware becomes unsupported for the OS being used.

I'll find an AMD / ATI graphics card that will work OOTB and this old box is working good enough for normal computer stuff with no complaints.  :)

Thanks again PCNetSpec.  :)

Hello PCNetSpec,

I researched media players and Linux.

I found "Parole Media Player" is designed for Xfce and it's in the repository so I installed it and problem solved.  :o

I'm embarrassed   :-[  for being so stupid   >:(  my apologies to you and the forum for not having done this earlier.
