I want to dual boot El Capitan and P8. Is this possible? If not, could I run P8 as the primary OS?

Whilst I can't say I've personally tried dual booting an iMac, I have installed Ubuntu or Peppermint on one.

That said, there are plenty of online tutorials for installing Ubuntu 16.04 on an iMac in a dual boot configuration .. and the process should be exactly the same for Peppermint 7 or 8.

Such as (but not limited to):-

or

If you're using the iMac (OS X) to create the Peppermint LiveUSB, I'd suggest using the "Disk Utility" to write the ISO to the USB stick (rather than Unetbootin as suggested in the first link) .. if you have any problems doing this let me know and I'll figure it out for you.
