I tried another usb port, but same problem. Not sure it can be the usb, because when I was booting peppermint from a live dvd, I had the same boot problem

Well, I'm stumped  :-\.  The only thing I know to suggest now is to wipe the external HD using gparted, repartition the drive and reinstall.   I would also start with a new .iso download.
Hold on a while, though ... somebody might have a better solution to offer.    ;)

cheers

Thanks in any case. I will hang on a while to see if there are any other suggestions. I actually doubt if a re-install and new iso will work. Given that it happens after a full hard drive install and with a live usb try. It even happens when I try linux mint from a live usb.

This stall happens before that Peppermint - starting screen comes...I do not know what happens in the background from the time I select to start peppermint from the Grub menu until the peppermint-starting screen comes. But it sure takes long, and the screen with the spider web-type or whatever, looks less defined as compared when I boot from my laptop - which makes me think it is graphics related.

Ok I'll try tomorrow.

Thanks. Are there any special instructions for formatting?

Format the USB flash drive to fat32.  Very intuitive....just be sure to enter the correct USB drive and Image Writer will do the rest.    ;)

Question:
 systemd-analyze blame says  "dev-sdb1.device"
Code: [Select]
hgm@hgm-MS-7529 ~ $ systemd-analyze blame | head -n 20
          15.701s apparmor.service
          12.741s dev-sdb1.device
           9.627s mintsystem.service
But blkid does not show any sdb1
Code: [Select]
hgm@hgm-MS-7529 ~ $ blkid
 /dev/sda1: UUID="f37412bc-a528-4fb0-a6e4-4751afe1302d" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="8352d179-01"
 /dev/sda5: UUID="1d0ac509-fc71-4d06-915f-7b9bb0fab0b2" TYPE="swap" PARTUUID="8352d179-05"
 hgm@hgm-MS-7529 ~ $
Is it possible that the delay is from your /etc/fstab trying to mount a partition that does not exist?
What is the result of:
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/fstab
AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
