Conky: AccuWeather app text spacing overspill.
« on: May 12, 2014, 06:10:59 am »
Good morning from a wet and windy Amsterdam  :).  I have a Conky issue or, at least a question.  A few weeks ago I installed a hacked Android AccuWeather app.  Provided most graciously by our own PCnetSpec - thanks  Mark:  Digital Weather and Clock.  It works beautifully.  I have it synced to autostart with my other Conky instance in 9 secs; crazy quick  :o eh!  Everything was running as smooth as silk and it looked great.  This is where I blame our lovely unpredictable Dutch weather.  We are having horrible weather here and there is so much info being streamed to the Accuweather app, that it overspills.  The spacing is wrong and the info becomes an unreadable mess.

I've tried adjusting the font size.  Unfortunately, all this does is make it a smaller blur.  Changing the dimensions of the app just makes the app asymmetrical.  Then there is the problem of when it update everything reverts back to default.  It this something that I must learn to live with and hope for better weather   ;D?  Or, is there a way to permanently edit the spacing?  Maybe VinDSL has an answer, as he is our de facto Conky guru   :D?  Thanks a lot and have week full of great weather   ;).

Hi Andy,

I'll take a look at the code, later today, if you don't get an answer by then.

There are all sorts of ways to acquire weather data -- the easiest being through an API -- but that usually requires a paid subscription to a weather data provider.

More than likely, the script you're using is sucking data directly off the weather web site -- via HTML or XML -- and it's being parsed into something useful for Conky.  Parsers add a whole new level of complexity, depending on how the author is doing it.

On face value, I would *guess* that something has changed on the weather site, and the parser needs to be adjusted for the differences in the raw data it's receiving.

Anyway, I'll check into it when I get back home this afternoon...  ;)

Cheers for that.  I'm also thinking that its at Accuweather's end rather than here.  It will be interesting to see what's happening.  Thanks again and have a great week   ;)!

I clicked the link above in your first post to go to the original post, and I can not download the first part, it keeps saying No such file or directory on the PPA....

Edit: I also booted up antix MX14 with lxde and tried it there, i get same results as peppermint 3 gives me....  :(

Hi rjm65,  I've just check again and it is downloading here.  You can download the .deb from my SpiderOak Cloud Storage: https://spideroak.com/browse/share/MokumMitch/1369.  Enter the room number 1369 if asked.  I hope this helps  ;).

Now that is weird.  I just removed and purged the AccuweatherConky I was using.  I then re-installed with the one I gave you.  It installed without an issue.  As I said - Weird  :-\!!

No unfortunately, the spacing is still all messed up.  I was just trying to figure out why rjm65 can't get the .deb to work.  Not working on 3 different machines is not normal.  I like you, have no problem with the .deb.  VinDSL is going to check out the scripting later.

Sorry for the confusion.  That's the label I'd given it in my SpiderOak.  :)
