General Discussion / Re: The 'obligatory' forum members Introduction topic
« on: November 06, 2014, 04:00:05 pm »
Hi,
My name is Henrik and I am from Sweden.
I have been a pepperminter since Peppermint 3. Back in the 80s I used C64 and Amiga. 90s it was Apple. 2000s Windows. 2010s Peppermint and that is what I call progression  :D (well I need to have Windows in my work so dual-boot is a savior.

Professionally I am a professor at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) in Human-Computer Interaction. My programming skills is however totally outdated and now I mainly work with research about usability acquisition processes in systems development, design learning, design of cock-pits and command and control units.

In my sparetime I have interests in aquariums, beer-brewing and music (old-school industrial, independent rock/pop, and reggae) and modding computers, cell-phones and other technologies.

I have Peppermint  on most of my (old)computers at home, dual boot (Peppermint/win) on my work computer and I try out different Linux-distros all the time. On my phones i prefer Android MIUI. I really like my Xiaomi Mi3.

Well that is bits and pieces about me!

/Henrik

New Users / Re: UEFI/Secure boot install

Hi,
Unsure if this helps. But if you are looking for a dual-boot and the issue is uefi and your already have a windows-machine and Peppermint5 will install but the machine will not accept/ignore Peppermint5 during boot. This is exactly the issue I had.

What I did. And by this is presume that you have a legal Win-key and could make a DVD/USB medium.

1). You must change in the boot  uefi to legacy mode.
2)  Install Peppermint over windows.
3) install windows over Peppermint5
4) install Peppermint 5 beside windows.

Cumbersome...Yes.
But at least that worked for me in the last run I had. Now I happily can make them live side by side.

User Submitted Tutorials / Re: Make Peppermint 5 look like MacOS

Great. Actually I díd not have patience so I went through the tutorial. It all went fine (even if I use the swedish language package and had to rethink some translations (my bad) )-  I might not stay with it however. I kind of like original P5.
So why have I asked for a Mac-lik dock it you might ask?
Well. I have a preppy son. Even if we have about 10 different computers at home (older ones and newer ones) he kind of wants a MAC. I just want to give him an idea of what linux can do...

OK great. This will be cool to try out. However before I do, and as a way to make the tutorial even better, I would be great to have a section on how to uninstall and revert to standard P5 theme.

Software & Applications / Re: How to get Apple-like panel?
« on: October 10, 2014, 03:43:42 pm »
About the OSX look: does anyone know which theme or settings I need to change to make the _ + X buttons look like they do on MacOS? (on the left, with the correct colours and stuff too).

I am on a mission to see how close I can get my Peppermint to look like Mac.

So why not go for the elementary os distro? I do not like it but it has what you are after...

Of course there Luna / elementary OS - but I like Peppermint...

how do you install  a panel like that it? And also how do you reverse it ifyou do not like it?

What are the pros and cons of such panel?

Software & Applications / Re: WPS Office for Linux
« on: October 03, 2014, 11:12:08 am »
Hi,
I also like WPS. For all non-english speakers there are several dictionaries at:
http://wps-community.org/download/dicts/

The extracted files should be put in:
/opt/kingsoft/wps-office/office6/dicts

You need to do that as root with the command  :
sudo cp -avr [where you extracted the files] /opt/kingsoft/wps-office/office6/dicts

I followed the instructions. As well as being a bit brave. It worked fine.
OK the icon for P5 was not there of course. But mixing a bit with different themes and icon images it is kind of fine. It works anyhow. Now I have a boot I like.
