Title: Reformat Reinstall on Touchsmart M6
Post by: Brotherred on October 15, 2018, 10:35:48 pm
I just reformatted the drive because the Crashes that I have talked about were getting to be too much.

When I reformatted I didnít see an issue seeing as Peppermint originally installed so well along side Windows.

Now I have attempted to install three times and it fails at installing the shim for UEFI and Grub. The Secure Boot IS disabled. Because the shim won't install then there really is not a boot loader. Right now the computer doesn't recognize an operating system period all for that reason.

This is my 64 bit HP Touchsmart M6.

Please Help

Hi Brotherred. Sorry to hear you are still having problems. What's a shim? Are you still trying to dual boot with Windows?

Here's the Ubuntu wiki on Secure boot.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UEFI/SecureBoot

No ironically I decided to wipe out windows this time and that seems to be a serious problem.

[Edited to quote the paragraphs specific to the fellow member's Shim question]

"The user upgrades an UEFI-enabled Ubuntu system to a new release where the system requires third-party drivers

On upgrade, the shim and shim-signed packages are upgraded. The shim-signed package's post-install tasks proceeds to generate a new MOK, and prompts the user for a password that is clearly mentioned as being required once the upgrade process is completed and the system rebooted.

During the upgrade, the kernel packages and third-party modules are upgraded. Third-party modules are rebuilt for the new kernels and their post-build process proceeds to automatically sign them with the MOK."

When I was dual booting *Peppermint* never asked for the boot password. Now in an installation where I do have encryption enabled, the shim fails to install.

This is version 9. Apologies for not mentioning that in the OP.

I will do fdisk when I get home tonight.

Regards and thanx ALL for replying to this thread.

Yes. Peppermint 9 64 bit.
I don't really use my 32 bit Laptop anymore since I have the M6.

I've been reading about efi's and shims etc. Good God! This stuff is way beyond my knowledge base.

Yeah no kidding. I have been reading about them at an overview level for years, since secure boot became a thing. I literally have no idea.

Is this a UEFI system .. because you currently have no FAT32 ESP partition for the UEFI bootloader(s).

That would be what is up then. I literally know nothing about it.

Is there a question in there ?

Just use Gparted to create say a 512MB FAT32 Partition .. then set that partition as an ESP partition under "Manage Flags" (when you choose ESP under manage flags, the BOOT flag will also automatically get set).

Now you'll either have to manually install GRUB, or reinstall.

I guess I didn't  know the question to ask. I was or am in those links learning how to set up an ESP.

You just told me everything that I need. Thanks.

So as you expected that was the answer. I just installed the system.

But it literally just went to sleep while I was looking for my wifi password  (stored in keypass) on my phone, the laptop went to sleep and I can't wake it up. I can't get a prompt.

I have to shut it down.

Great to hear you've got it going. Now you'll just have to change settings in power management to prevent it from sleeping.

Taptalk won't let me edit the OP topic. I will do it later tonight

I don't think it slept. That's a crash.

Others here have reported similar activity upon system going to sleep, from what I've read, they all fixed the problem by disabling sleep. Maybe I missed something.

No you got it. I certainly have that issue in the games crashing thread.

I just didn't like how this one happened. It seemed too quick and random. I am probably just wrong.
