Title: Unetbootin not working for you (in Windows) ? .. try Rufus
Post by: PCNetSpec on June 25, 2014, 12:44:21 pm
If you're attempting to create a LiveUSB in Windows using Unetbootin, and it turns out to be unbootable .. just displaying the Syslinux version screen. and an flashing prompt...

First try typing

live

at the flashing prompt and hitting Enter

If that doesn't work.....

Someone on my other forum has informed me they have had better luck with Rufus:
http://rufus.akeo.ie/

Can't say I've tried it myself as it's a Windows tool .. but thought I'd mention it as an option.

As the Peppermint 5 ISO's are isohybrid images, Linux users can also use either the "dd" or "cat" commands to copy the ISO to a USB stick (but BE CAREFUL)
I'm also informed that Windows uses can use Win32 Disk Imager:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
to write isohybrid images to USB sticks.

I use Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.5.1.exe from http://www.pendrivelinux.com (http://www.pendrivelinux.com) on windows 7 and I never had a problem... Also another one to try that works and you can put as many distros on it as your usb chip can hold is Yumi... They create a boot menu in yumi and it lists each distro by number, and you can store as many as you like on your thumb drive...   ;)

Cheers, but I thought Universal USB Creator specifically needed to have a distro "added" to its database (like LinuxLive), so wouldn't be ready for Peppermint 5 yet ?

Or maybe I'm wrong ?

Point is, different USB creators work for different people on different hardware .. so try them all :)

I only mentioned Rufus because I'd never heard of it before ;)

I have used Rufus on many occasions, it works just fine for making DOS USB boot drives, I use that when I need to boot a laptop that has linux only on it and they want the bios updated which can only be done using dos or windows....   ;)

Nope you are correct it uses a database, but you could also use the unlisted linux option, not sure if it will work though or not would have to try it and let you know....  :P

If you scroll to the bottom of the distro list and use the option to (Try and Unlisted Linux) and then point it to your peppermint 5 ISO it does work, I just booted my old IBM t30 using Plop boot manager Cdrom, and telling plop to load the usb stick, and peppermint 5 has loaded live to the desktop....   :)
