Title: Downgrading Chrome/Chromium in Peppermint 5 (SOLVED)
Post by: nberidze on June 24, 2014, 08:31:34 am
I installed Peppermint 5 today, and it looks nice, except for some weird graphical anomalies. Then I saw the new tutorial on how to downgrade Chrome/Chromium. Tried first to disable graphics effects, but that made Chromium display blank windows. Now I'm running Firefox until I have time to look at how to downgrade Chromium.

But a question to developers: Isn't this release a bit premature? I mean, I can't use the SSBs now, which is kind of the linchpin of the distro's concept, isn't it? Why not wait until this graphical issue is resolved?

No .. it's an upsteam issue that's out of our control and only affects a small number of users.
(we have no idea if/when Google plan to address this, so what's the point in waiting ?)

Ice now works with BOTH Chromium AND Chrome .. so the easiest solution would be to install the non-Aura version of Chrome mentioned in the "Downgrading" tutorial (linked below) :)

Hi nberidze, how's it going?  I experienced the same issue.  It is resolved by downgrading your Chromium Browser or Google Chrome if you are using that.  The solution instructions are found in this link: http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,494.0.html.  I hope this helps - good luck  ;)!

Hey AndiInMokum, it's going fine. P4 worked excellent most of the time, and I'm looking forward to seeing what's in P5.

Question: The source for older versions of Chrome is given as a site in China (pcbeta.com). Is there any reason not to use, say, this source: http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/core/trusty/universe/base/chromium-browser

Yes there is a reason not to use that version...

Firstly, that's Chromium not Chrome.

Secondly, It's also the same Aura enabled version of chromium from the default repositories .. kinda pointless installing the same version of chromium  again eh ;)

If you're not happy with that source .. either do the "Chromium" downgrade .. or search for Chrome version 34 somewhere else online.

Further info...

The version of Chromium (31) in my PPA came from here:
https://launchpad.net/~chromium-daily/+archive/stable
i just copied it to my own PPA in case the 14.04 version in that PPA disappeared or where updated with Aura enabled versions.
(so we always have a non-Aura version available)
