Title: Linux/Nouveau Really Needs to sort out Basic Graphics Drivers
Post by: zebedeeboss on December 17, 2016, 03:54:32 am
Hi
I Finally sorted out my "nomodeset" problem when I go Distro hopping.
Unplug the other two monitors.   If I have all three monitors plugged in - very few Distro's will boot without nomodeset.
Use 1 monitor and it's fine.   Sigh!!!

Yeah that's a bit of an oversight by the nouveau team :o

One thing Linus Torvalds used to complain about is how little Nvidia worked with him compared to other hardware manufacturers.  (not that they really have to)  I don't know if that's changed, but probably not if you're still having issues like this.

My golden rule with Nvidia:  go to proprietary drivers as soon as possible, because the Nouveau driver sucks.  ::)

My "golden rule" is to avoid buying computers with NVidia graphics cards.  ;)

I don't need them and I definitely do not need the potential problems that so many people have with them.  8)

If they eventually begin to show better cooperation and produce cards that work better with Linux then I will consider buying them.

Hands down, the best gaming GPUs for Linux, even before the current lack of Radeon proprietary drivers for Ubuntu 16.04+.  I need them for that.  Otherwise, I'd probably just stick to Intel and AMD graphics with the open source drivers.

Really, Nvidia owes nothing to open source or Linux.  The fact that they keep their Linux drivers up to date makes them all right in my book.  I don't need every company whose stuff I use to be open source.  I know I can install a Linux OS on my computer and, in most cases, install that proprietary driver easily to play my games.  But, that Nouveau driver sucks.

The worst issue I had with Nouveau was with my old AMD computer with a GeForce 6100 NForce 405 built into it and an Emachines monitor on Ubuntu 9.10.  My screen would be stuck at 640x480 until I got the Nvidia driver installed.  ::)
