Title: Screenshot Gallery -- Show Us Your Screen
Post by: PCNetSpec on October 26, 2014, 09:59:54 pm
Raw screenshots without the information that would allow other users to replicate your fine efforts belong here.

But if you feel like sharing (helping other users replicate the look) by including links to things like:-

Wallpaper
Theme(s)
Icons
and any information regarding any docks bars you're using
Conky scripts
and any other info/links that you think might be useful.

Please post the screenshot(s) including links/info in this board:
http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/board,10.0.html (http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/board,10.0.html)
instead .. then pat yourself on the back for being so community spirited :)

Am keeping it simple with Peppermix-Dark theme and stock wallpaper. Orange icons, simple conky and branded terminal. Details of all of these on my other posts.

mattosensei,

It's amazing how beautiful one can make Peppermint.  With that dark theme you play with the color of orange --and make it work!  Wow!!  ;)

@perknh - agreed!

@Andy - just noticed that I appear to be missing a font on the conky script that would show network up/down. Can you help?  :-\

It looks okay to me  :-\.  Run this in the terminal and post it back:

gedit ~/.conkyrc
I'll check it against the one I have installed and let you know if there's anything missing  ;).

@mattosensei

I take it you mean "icon" not "font", and are referring to those little boxes where there should be an icon ?

Looking good Graeme.  Simple of more elaborate, it doesn't matter.  The Peppermix-Dark theme works so well for both and shows how easy it is to have a great desktop - well done  ;).

I don't think emegra's using Peppermix-Dark Andy .. the mouseover on the menu is blue.

Well spotted Mark in fact I was about to correct Andy when your post came through

unfortunately i can't use Peppermix-Dark because it wipes out text on a program i use quite a lot, that said i could use it but it would mean changing themes when i wanted to use that particular program, The theme you see on the screenshot is called StylishDark-wps which i downloaded from gnome-look.org some time ago

Am on another comp at the moment (have just installed PM6 to another machine that I use!  :P) so can't post the gedit just  yet. However, looking back at your original post, mine  looks the same as yours. Note the boxy/square icons bottom right. My guess is that's a missing font? But really not all that big a deal.

Hi everyone,

I thought maybe an example of a simple Openbox theme (can be found here (http://box-look.org/content/show.php/HitsujiTMO?content=161831)) might be of interest:

(http://s6.postimg.org/ktd3j6vcd/Scr_18_12_54_shot.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/ktd3j6vcd/)

My wallpapers change randomly every 2 minutes. The one shown is a Hubble Space Telescope picture from NASA, as I recall.

I'm not a really big fan of Openbox, but that's cool nonetheless.  I really like the Hubble background.

Thank you, scifidude79 !!

Openbox is quite customizable (as you no doubt know). The main thing that turns many users off is the work to get desktop icons. I guess I'm lucky: I don't like them and therefore don't miss them !!  :D

Actually, I despise icons on my desktop, so that's never been an issue for me.  I've tried Openbox a few times, it's just a bit too bare bones for my taste.  I like the whole panel with a menu thing. (Yes, I know you can put a panel in Openbox, I just don't like it as well.)  I also like shortcuts on my panel and in my menu for my favorite apps.  Here's my setup:

(https://evilgenius180.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/myscreen.jpg?w=400) (https://evilgenius180.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/myscreen.jpg)

Not too far from "stock."  Just a few personal touches here and there, I like to keep things simple and straightforward.   8)

Yeah mine stays fairly stock too .. I'm not massive on customising, I used to, but now I just want it do "do stuff" :)

I'm not saying people shouldn't customise .. by all means do, that's why we try to make it easy .. it's just not for me.

That said, I do have the added benefit of choosing exactly what represents "stock"  .. so I wouldn't customise it too much would I  :D

I used to do a lot of customization too.  Now, I just prefer to dig in and get going, as you said.  Though, some things (like changing the clock display) do give me something to do while my graphics driver is downloading and installing.  ;)

I have all of that !! -- you just don't see it in my screenshot! I use (in the computer shown) lxpanel and set it to hide until the mouse enters the edge where it is hidden -- but otherwise it resembles your panel quite a bit. On other machines that I use with Openbox I have tint2 as my panel. Works quite well for me. I really use keyboard shortcuts very much to start programs, etc. so panel shortcuts don't bring me much and I don't always set them up.

You have a really nice, clean setup and it looks a lot like my standard Peppermint LXDE login. I switch between the Peppermint standard WM (LXDE), Openbox and i3 with just about every login. Maybe I should go into therapy ...

Tint2!  I'm so bad at remembering names, especially for software I haven't run in ages.  That's the panel I've used before in Openbox.  Not bad, but not quite as fancy as LXPanel.

Maybe I should go into therapy ...

Naw, there's nothing wrong with doing things how you like it.  It's your system, it should be set up exactly as you want it.  That's one thing that always attracted me about Linux.  If you don't like it, fix it.  ;D

Yep, FTL.  That background is a game perk for buying it on GOG.  I like FTL, but you definitely die a lot.  Though, it can be hilarious.  I've had my crew die from suffocation, fires, being boarded and good old fashioned your hull reaches zero and the ship 'splodes.  I haven't played a whole lot of it.

I hear you on having too many games.  I have some games I've never played.  I'm saving them for when I'm done with others and don't have the cash to buy more.  :D

Yeah, I love GL.  I have the first 20 Hal Jordan GL comics from the late 50s/early 60s in a handy single volume (line art only, no color, but I don't care) and I love it.  I need to get more volumes with more GL goodness.  :)

Using the Peppermix-dark theme with a picture I took during a recent trip to Washington, DC as my background and with a Conky script I pieced together from a couple of others.

My menu is the Super Mario boss door (googled for Mario sprites), I wan't to make a full super mario theme but probably don't have the time.  :P

I love Super Mario.  A Mario theme would be cool.  I may have to look into that.  :)

I made a full Super Mario website theme once using sprites. It was pretty sweet, animated gifs and such (would be using JavaScript or html5 these days :P) but it is lost in cyberspace now, lost in a freak computer crash (or rage quit, can't remember which).
Title: Re: Screenshot Gallery -- Show Us Your Screen
Post by: scifidude79 on October 04, 2015, 11:18:16 am
I did a search for wallpapers, but most of the ones I found were in the newer 3D style.  To me, Mario is that cool 8 or 16 bit character, not some 3D thing.  I tried Super Mario 64 once, which is 3D, and I didn't like it as well as the 2D Mario of my youth.  So, I may have to make my own wallpaper, if I decide to make a Mario theme.  (I may not)

Yes please. Should I use a GUI editor or edit it manually?

Hi sk_sarma,

Until you understand the configuration file for conky, I would suggest using a GUI tool such as conky-manager (http://tuxtweaks.com/2013/08/conky-ubuntu-linux-mint/).

The link tells you where to get it and how to get it.

The reason for the half Peppermint menu button was we were running low of them when Peppermint 6 was released .. We've since had a new shipment and I considered pushing an update with a full Peppermint, but a dentist friend of mine threw a fit and convinced me not to for health reasons.

BTW, I'm neutral on 'green'.  I'll make a 'green theme' from time-to-time, but I'm tired of it after a week, and dump it.

Here's the compromise I've been running, for a couple of months.  Looks better in real life.

I'm not sure what color one would call it, but it plays nicely on my triple monitor setup -- gives the room a pleasant glow at night.   8)

I'm late to this party, but newer to Peppermint 7. I'm landing with Peppermint OS since it's the best out of the box distro I've used. I'm running it as my media server on a 2009 Gateway, and I'm going to install as my primary on my Mid 2012 MBP.

So to the Peppermint team -- thank you, thank you, thank you!

Here's the desktop I landed with in VirtualBox. It's what I'll run on MBP in a few weeks. I'm using 2 stock backgrounds right now that I switch between. I like a simple clean minimal desktop.

Hey hikerdude2009, and welcome to the forum :)

Great to hear you're enjoying Peppermint, and I think I can talk for the rest of the team when I say "you're most welcome".

As we consider a sense of community as important than the distro itself, I hope you'll stick around and become an active member of it .. Peppermint is nothing without it's community :)

Hello Slim.Fatz,

Yes, it is a beautiful wallpaper.

I liberated that wallpaper from Ubuntu Unity 16.04.  It's called Spring (https://www.ostechnix.com/default-set-wallpapers-ubuntu-16-04-lts/) by Peter Apas.  Maybe there's a trick you know so you could grab the wallpaper from Synaptic Package Manager.  Spring is in the set of wallpapers found by typing ubuntu-wallpapers-trusty.  I've also uploaded the link to the photo and placed it in my Imgur account.  If all else fails, you can download Trusty, put it on a live flash drive or DVD, and then take the wallpaper from there.  That is how I got the wallpaper.

http://imgur.com/QqX6HH5 (http://imgur.com/QqX6HH5)

Thanks, Slim.  Here's our desktop without the menu box in the way:

Thank you so much, emegra.

emegra, that clock is one of the reasons why I LOVE the interface of Xfce.  Here's what you do:

Left click onto your clock > Right click onto Properties >  Look for Appearance >  Right click onto Layout > Choose LED > Now look below Appearance for Clock Options > Uncheck 24-hour clock > Again, look below, and check the box for Flash time separators

That's it.  We now have a living clock for human beings! ;)

Sometimes I get a yellow thing going on myself when I want to brighten my mood.  I liberated this from one of the Windows 8s, and it couldn't be happier than going native in Linux.  perknh says, let your freak flag fly!*  8)

Right on, thanks. I think I installed conky. How do I make it show up on my desktop? Do I need screenfetch?

(EDIT) I mean I'm pretty sure I installed conky, there's a checkmark there, says "installed." OK, I think I have conky running, but not really like mattosensei has it, like a part of my desktop. Jeez, I'm surprised how much RAM I'm using! I'm glad I didn't go with less... cpu usage isn't too bad, though.

I made a post on this forum about a GUI software called "Conky Manager" that makes it easy displaying conky and configuring it. You can check it here. There is also a link to donwload it.

If you want that wallpaper in PM8, it's attached below.

Download it, then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo nemo /usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers
and copy the wallpaper into the window that just opened.

I've also attached a version that has the Peppermint logo on the tide rounded house brick in the mid foreground (this was **nearly** the PM7-R default but we decided against the logo) .. just in case anyone wants it.

Red version would be awesome! I like this Arc type dark themes but, almost every gtk theme has contrast issues. They using very dark font colors, dark window handles.

Maybe you'd like my theming better if I were stay with yellow-red (http://mentalfloss.com/article/29942/which-came-first-orange-color-or-orange-fruit) instead of pushing it all the way up to orange! :D

Very nice, coyote.  I believe that Peppermint 7 and Peppermint 6 were Peppermint's all-time aesthetic masterpieces.  What makes Peppermint 8 Respin so special is happening out of sight and under the hood.  I am enjoying our new Pepirus-Dark icons, however.  The vibrocentric font is new to me.  I must have missed it way back when, but I like it! :)

Opera still uses Chromiums Blink rendering engine, but I'd say the rest of the code has diverged sufficiently for it not to be considered a Chromium 'clone' any more.

In fact this is actually a problem for us, Opera have changed that much that it no longer honours most of the Chromium command line switches .. so no --app mode, making SSB's impossible :(

Brilliant!

You know ... I never thought about it that way, but yeah.

If I had a touch-screen display on my desktop or laptop, like my 'Hello Moto', the Speed DIAL feature would work a treat.

I wonder if that's what the Opera devs had in mind. The odd nomenclature, and buttons in the sidebar, would suggest the answer is "Yes".   :)

Good one, pin

You still have a physical install of it? Nice haha. Shiki Wise is surprisingly similar to the Peppermix-Green theme. There was a GTK 3 restoration effort for Shiki called Wise-X, but it didn't last very long and stopped receiving updates. I can confirm that the old GNOME Wise icon-set work just fine in Pepp though. Obviously not as modern/flashy as MATE-Faenza.

Yup. I know that sounds like BS, so here's a snappy of the Grub on my 'Road Warrior'.

Please, excuse the dusty display - I live in Arizona and lug it around daily.

It doesn't look that bad, in real life. Damn 'Hello Moto' cellphone camera picks up everything...  ;D

Yeah wouldn't doubt it. Too bad for UEFI. I'm dying to see what such a historic install of Mint looks like on there  :)
My oldest OS install to date is 1  1/2-2 years old. Windows 7 on one of the little HP boxes. Other unit is a Core Duo polycarbonate iMac which has had the same install of OS X 10.6 for 4 years or so, but that machine is pretty much depleted. (dud graphics)

PM7 was very "Marmite", as far as the icon theme went, some loved it and others hated it .. there was no middle ground :)

I'm quite surprised by the amount of people who said they preferred the blue active window border rather than the grey though .. but then you only ever hear from people that don't like a change, people that are happy with a change rarely comment. So there's really no way to know which people prefer.

@zebedeeboss
I get the feeling it **is** the xfce4-panel, but it has been "tweaked" to look more like the ChromeOS panel .. possibly following the tutorial by stevesveryown.

See here:
https://plus.google.com/photos/photo/108119382432572544511/6559936687815140786?sqid=118252788430477557487&ssid=3f32a6e1-bd61-434b-9cbc-891de3d7f98b

Steve had done a video on how to achieve this, but I can no longer find it ???

@zeb: It is a 2K display on a Chuwi LapBook 12.3. The build quality of this laptop is horrible. It is almost falling apart after daily usage for 9 months. But, still, a great screen. ;)

Well the people that invented the mouse controlled "windowed" GUI, Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) actually intended it to be used in that orientation .. it also suggests 16:9 (or thereabouts) isn't nearly as new as some people would like to think :)

Xerox Alto Workstation (1st March 1973)

PARC were light years ahead of anyone else .. but never had the smarts to realise it could be a commercial success (odd when you consider Xerox weren't really dumb when it comes to business).

Did Steve Jobs steal everything from Xerox PARC? (https://www.mac-history.net/computer-history/2012-03-22/apple-and-xerox-parc)

Yes of course he did .. he's pretty much admitted so.
(something any Mac fans that bitch about Microsoft 'stealing' the MacOS GUI idea should keep in mind .. it wasn't Apple's to steal in the first place)

Oops, doing my rant thing again aren't I :-[

I have been using Peppermint 9 for 2 months with great satisfaction and amazement to see that, contrary to what we say, it is not limited to customization. I come from XFCE I like to have a lightweight and responsive lightweight computer while maintaining an attractive graphic look, occasionally winking at LXDE for its minimal look, but I found it too thin and not very appealing. Peppermint for me contains everything I want in a PC, I hope it never changes, I meanwhile I enjoy changing the connotations in terms of aesthetics. Thank you very much!

Peppermint for me contains everything I want in a PC, I hope it never changes, I mean while I enjoy changing the connotations in terms of aesthetics.

Well, said.

Peppermint will change. The underlying components are moving targets, and stitching them together into one cohesive package requires change and adaptation. But, rest assured, the core principals, under which Peppermint operates will never change.

We like it, too  :)

@aky-simo: Are you using FB to host your pics?

Been thinking about this all day, but didn't have time to ask you about it, this morning, at 0-dark thirty.

I think it is because  I first started out with gnome 2 ever since then "Menu" just looks odd to me  ;)

I made a little discovery:

If you open dconf-editor, and go to org > nemo > desktop and remove the tick from "use-desktop-grid", this enables you to show preview-images on the desktop at (almost) any size. It also allows these preview-images to overlap.

I like to put some notes and quotes and folders with current projects on my desktop. At the moment, it looks like this:

Yes. But I did not know that the elements on the desktop could overlap. That makes it more similar to a messy desktop in the real world.

just showing my peppy desktop (still work in progress, should be strong and handy enough for many creative works) and sorry for the 4K - just native resolution

and i must say damn peppermint is so rocksolid - i really like that! thumbs up guys for your great work  ;)

links removed

... just some facts - icons "sardi" - modified into peppermint-red (WIP),
installed is cinnamon (for more conveient 4K-support, helped alot with the fonts) and the skin is Vivaldi (for now),
music player is Aimp through Wine with a matching skin W8 (works good enough),
specs in the terminal - i will stick by that, no updates / upgrades to pepp 9 planned yet

i'm on the testing ... Godot-engine, Unigine-Benchmarks, Blender 2.79 and 2.8 alpha (cant await the final release), Krita, Gimp, Inkscape (new to me) and such nifty tools like instant meshes, sculptgl and many more...

(on a small secondary linux filesystem is the newest KaOS release installed, for someprograms that must run on KDE Plasma, and for some new input from the unconventional interface in KaOS
(which i like) imagine a crafter (right hander) there would he practically place his tools on the right or on the left?)

i wish you all much fun with peppermint equal which version you use

and thanks again ... and again to the peppermint-team.

I am loving Peppermint 9. It really should be in the top 10 on Distrowatch too! Everything just works, and teething troubles (such as  prnter that misbehave) can often be figured out. But the excellent Peppermint Forum, is an excellent source of information and help otherwise.

Having made the transition from Peppermint 5 thru to 9, the evolution of this distro is just awesome. Keep it up.

This is my desktop. I have ditched the docky's and conky's, and made full use of the excellent ICE utility.

it is pepp 9 ... i now have 9 on three desktops and 4 Laptops .... i'll always experiment out of curiosity for other distros , but i dont see me using anything but peppermint for quite some time unless something unexpected happens ... i just like it , its fast ,  reliable and a pleasure to look at , there are a lot of little things in peppermint that arent included in a lot of distros .. little things that just make life easier like the shortcut to opening a folder as root in the menu and my favorites , the copy to and move to feature that lets me move my files any where i want in the shortest amount of time and effort  .... heck even Samba , ive never set up Samba shares so easily or quickly on any other distro

out of work at the moment , but i WILL be Donating to the cause once i get back to work

Sorry I do not know if it's the right place to ask for this, since we are talking about graphic changes and additional themes. Can anyone tell me where I can find this theme, Numix dark-red? If you're asking how to install this gtk theme, open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/.themes
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/.themes
then
Code: [Select]
wget https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/uploads/themes/054P-KVVX-JJN7.zip
then
Code: [Select]
unzip 054P-KVVX-JJN7.zip
now if you go to:-

Menu > Settings > Customise Look & Feel

you should (on the "Widget' tab) have the option of selecting "Numix Dark Red"

But as I said, it won't work properly in the Gtk version used in Peppermint 9 (it would work in Peppermint 8, but not 9).

Here I am again! sorry if it took me too long but I had to install Peppermint again on my netbook, here if you did not know anyone who combined a similar mess to add new graphic themes, now you can say to know him. To make it simple after several unsuccessful attempts I uninstalled the various packages, to try to use the famous theme Numix dark-theme, but I also deleted something that I did not have ... patience. Not all the ills come to harm because while I was fixing the installation process of Peppermint, for the umpteenth time (yes it's not the first one)  :D I thought but why not use the adwaita-dark theme with nice numix icons and take advantage of program for customizing the Numix folders? Tatan !!! Every now and then to me the hamster in my head runs, and here is the result .. I do not know satisfies you, then the circular icons I like very much, I remember those that I keep in my smartphone Nokia 2.1. The only "problem" is when I highlight the folders because the blue of the adwaita-dark theme comes back, it's not bad for me so good, what do you think?  ;)  8)

p.s. thanks again for your availability PCNet!!!

I can appreciate what you did there, because I dug my EeePC out of the closet, a few weeks ago, to test Peppermint Respin-2.

Now that the testing is done, I've been scaling everything back, to make the fonts, icons, et cetera the proper size on its rather small-ish display.

Nice job, aky-simo.  :)

Now that the testing is done, I've been scaling everything back, to make the fonts, icons, et cetera the proper size on its rather small-ish display.

Nice job, aky-simo.  :)

These little laptops love them or hate them, thanks to them I never felt the need to be stuck on a tablet, spending time creating websites comfortably on the bed with a netbook is the best! :D

Agreed! I'll love my EeePC, until death do us part - whichever one of us goes first. LoL  :D

We present:
Linux Mint 9 Isadora Peppermint OS 9: in green

While I do quite like that theme combination, I would never actually use such a bright wallpaper under regular circumstances. I tend to stick with grayscale images of beaches/landscapes or guitars. Just wanted to exaggerate the resemblance to that other mint

Noice, docR.

Personally, I like green themes, but it's like waving a cape in front of a bull, when PCNoSleep sees them.

So, now I stick with safer colors...  :D

So I take it, VinDSL, you suspect that PCNetSpec probably wouldn't be too fond of the Linux Peppermint OS/ Linux Mint dragonfly combination look -- ESPECIALLY if he noticed that it was somewhat on the green side of things in terms of color! :D

On the other hand, maybe not! ;)

That's what I was waiting for!!  But even I have difficulty reconciling the iconographies of the two distributions together.  That said, they're still two of the most user-friendly distributions I've seen yet, and both Peppermint and Mint (Cinnamon edition) are works of art.  Different approaches, yes, but works of art.  On both the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed.  Both distributions are polished and attentive to details.  In Peppermint's case, our DE is an improvement upon stock Xfce, -- esp. with the removal of needless redundancies.  While Mint's Cinnamon edition is an improvement upon GNOME 3 in favor of user-friendliness for the ordinary guy and gal.:)

Personally I think Peppermint's panel and menu are easier to work with that Cinnamon's panel and menu -- after configuration!  Out of the box I think Cinnamon's DE is easier to understand if coming directly from Windows.  There's next to no configuring to do with Cinnamon, and THAT is Cinnamon's DE's virtue.  On the other hand, if you take about 5-10 minutes to configure Peppermint's menu and panel, then, after that, EVERYTHING is easier to do in Peppermint from then on.  And, THAT is our DE's virtue.

Both ways are good.  They're just two different approaches. ;)

Alright, I've had my fun. Back to the team color.

Steve Jobs once made a remark about his Aqua interface (infamous figure for you hippies ik, but he's dead. lighten up). That he wanted users to have the urge to "lick" the UI before them. I feel this color combination kind of takes that philosophy to the extreme. I feel like lighting one of my scented candles and stuffing my face with mints and coffee. Pull out a nice book  :D
Eager to get this installed on physical hardware again.

It's actually a ravine with a 150 foot drop in parts it's almost impossible to get in the water unless you get too close to the edge and slip (not recommended) ,  That was the closest I could get without abseiling equipment :) the flow of the river leads to a waterfall which was just behind where I was standing
