Try this ....

Download ONE of these 2 files to your PC depending on if you're running 32bit or 64bit Peppermint 4

32bit:
https://launchpad.net/~r5u87x-loader/+archive/ppa/+files/r5u87x_0.2.1%2Br64%2Bdfsg1-0ppa12_i386.deb

64bit:
https://launchpad.net/~r5u87x-loader/+archive/ppa/+files/r5u87x_0.2.1%2Br64%2Bdfsg1-0ppa12_amd64.deb

Once downloaded, double-click it to install.

Once installed, open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo /usr/share/r5u87x/r5u87x-download-firmware.sh
to download and install the firmware.

a) I seriously doubt if there'll be a non-PAE version for a whole host of reasons.

b) In any case you're only giving anecdotal evidence that it's an issue with PAE.

I once had an idea for a Gentoo based distro where you had to compile everything on a black screen with black text and highlighting

Well you know the way Gentoo users like everything to be as hard as possible.....

S&M Linux - "Be gentoo with me" edition

Maybe this would be an interesting project ?

Oh, and no books allowed .. Mwuhahaha ;)

[EDIT]

I also considered removing the lettering from the keys, and using a foreign keyboard layout .. but figured that was probably a bit over the top  :o

OK, WITHOUT variety running, what happens if you run:
Code: [Select]
/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/variety/bin/variety; sleep 30; /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/variety/bin/variety --quit

if variety is ALREADY running .. then you open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/variety/bin/variety --quit
does it cause variety to exit ?
