Networking / WiFi LED indicator blinking whilst online (SOLVED)
« on: October 04, 2016, 11:02:27 am »
One annoyance I've put up with is a blinking led on wifi.
Any way to sort this, I've asked before but that was a usb wifi - now given away.
Wifi works ok now after I found one of the internal antenae connectors had come loose from the wifi card.. ::)

output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network

Advanced Topics / Pre login issue (Solved)
« on: October 01, 2016, 07:44:20 am »
Not having a good laptop day today.. ???

Symptoms:
Switched laptop on, plymouth splash displays and doesn't proceed any further (just before login) for over 5 minutes,
no ssd activity at all..freezes.

1st time this happened earlier this week, I done a hard shut-down (power button for 5 seconds or so) and it was fine on restart.
I've had to do this 3 times just to log in (eventually) today.
Stumped?!

Any ideas? Help appreciated..
TIA

On a more positive note, complete re-installation of PM7 on the AO533 netbook for SWMBO without a glitch earlier.  :D

General Discussion / Growing business trend?
« on: September 28, 2016, 04:06:31 am »
In the pursuit of your hard earned currency, is the recent trend in Lenovogate and HP Printing consumables, a growing trend which will become the norm in the IT industry?

Just found this letter from EFF to HP asking to revert back to previous company policy being able to use third party ink refills. (revoke DRM)
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/09/what-hp-must-do-make-amends-its-self-destructing-printers

Are HP now contributing to landfill sites with this decision?

Considering that nowadays the price of a new printer isn't that far off HP refills.. ::)

[Edit: There is a petition to sign via EFF if you disagree with the move by HP] done  8)

Software & Applications / xfce4 panel issue (Solved)
« on: September 25, 2016, 05:38:56 am »
Note: This xfce4 panel issue is random and intermediate.

When I hover over either the 'mintupdate' or the 'nm-applet' and the icon disappears completely.
The only way I can get them back is by rebooting the system.
Is there a fix for this?

Note: Not sure if reverting back to the 'oldstyle menu' and removing the 'whisker menu' has anything to do with this.
Sometimes its ok for an entire session and sometimes not.

Cheers  :)

Development / PM8 ideas?
« on: September 23, 2016, 08:28:46 am »
Hi,

Just had a thought regarding the next Peppermint distro:

Can Conky be integrated into the distro so that it is shown on the desktop by default or just on the Live session or both?

Reason I ask is, we were all newbies to linux at some point and one of the things I found whilst learning my way around
on a USB Live session or the installed system, was the terminal commands.

What if basic terminal commands (chosen by you guys) were integrated into conky that readily showed up on your desktop.
Instead of the conky defaults or alongside some of the defaults in conky.

They don't do anything but, they are a visual display of what you want to do via the terminal and they are there all the time unless
the end-user decides to alter or remove.

i.e. inxi -Fz command to display system information

I'm sure a pre-configured conky may be beneficial, as well as not having to install conky post system installation.
There seems to be a growing trend in using this application. Why not help us to help newbies.
cheers

Software & Applications / Plymouth Removal? (solved)
« on: September 23, 2016, 06:57:03 am »
Ok, since Plymouth is a graphical tool for boot screens,
Is it safe to remove completely as the proprietary nvidia drivers screw it up anyway.

Is it advised to remove it or just disable it at boot?  ???

How do I go about achieving this?

TIA

General Discussion / Lenovo Loves Linux (MS now in the clear)
« on: September 21, 2016, 04:54:31 am »
So much so, that they are blocking linux installations on newer hardware from Lenovo/IBM that come with a pre-installation of Windows 10 Signature!

Quote
This is related to the discussion going on Lenovo's forum's about why the SSD is locked in a proprietary RAID mode that Linux doesn't understand. Laptops known to be affected include the Yoga 900 ISK2, Yoga 900S, and Yoga 710S, which all have the same issue according to posts I've read on Lenovo's Linux forum.

I knew MS was up to something when this 'Microsoft Loves Linux' campaign started, introduction of powershell to linux etc..

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/53ri0m/warning_microsoft_signature_pc_program_now/

Edit: (Forum code doesn't seem to work with external HTTPS)

So you can't even dual boot a system  >:(

LENOVO, HELPING THE IT INDUSTRY!

[Edit]: Thread title changed to reflect the culprits, as Microsoft was not to blame in this instance, allbeit unsurprising at the outset with the lack of official statements issued by either party involved.

Ok after reading other topics regarding slow boot times, I wish to stop apparmor at boot.
I have found another thread regarding disabling it at boot and wish to do that (at least I can revert back) without removing it.

https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,4094.0.html

When reading about it elsewhere I ran this in the Terminal:
Code: [Select]
sudo apparmor_statuswhich, in turn produced this:
Code: [Select]
apparmor module is loaded.
18 profiles are loaded.
18 profiles are in enforce mode.
   /sbin/dhclient
   /usr/bin/evince
   /usr/bin/evince-previewer

0 profiles are in complain mode.
2 processes have profiles defined.
2 processes are in enforce mode.
   /sbin/dhclient (1346)
   /usr/sbin/cups-browsed (899)
0 processes are in complain mode.
0 processes are unconfined but have a profile defined.

So my question is; Is it safe to disable apparmor in my case to speed up my boot time?  ???

TIA

As per title, how do I get it back?
Seem to remember it stopped working after the 4.4.0-36-generic kernel upgrade after new installation.
Is it a plymouth issue?
{FYI} Have just done a system update/upgrade and dist-upgrade and nothing new.

GNU/Linux Discussion / Advice/ recommendations for a music player
« on: September 14, 2016, 10:16:25 am »
Gooday all,
I'm looking for help/ pointers for a minimalist mp3/audio player only, just to listen to mp3 songs/albums, NO radio/podcasts or streaming stuff and with low resources  ;)
I've tried all the music players in the repos and dislike them.
VLC is good but most of the video stuff can now be done within browser, so it's excess baggage.
Had a look via searches only to find alot which are not in the repos..are these safe?

Aqualung looked ok..

Any recommendations/ experiences/ advice on which to try?

Before anyone mentions it, NO I wont run Wine with a media player of any sort  :P
Thanks in advance

New Users / Disks function confirmation required (Solved)
« on: September 13, 2016, 12:01:32 pm »
Menu>Preferences>Disks

Click on Partition 1 SDA>
Hamburger logo (Top RH corner)>
Create System Image>
Choose your destination>

Does this create a snapshot image of partition 1
so you can store it elsewhere?

Then I presume you can restore it using the:
-cog [button]>restore partition image
when/if required.

Specwise it looks like a gamechanger for Chrome OS.
Dual ac wifi  :D
Run your android apps on it also.
Wonder how PM7 would perform on this little specced beauty (no aesthetically though) 12hr battery time.

Santa is around the corner..

Advanced Topics / XFCE4 Panel Menu issue [Solved]
« on: September 12, 2016, 06:11:57 am »
Is there any way to remove a blank panel from the XFCE4 menu in peppermint 7?

it's my Menu>Internet>

Within Intenet> there is Firefox and a blank panel which when presses shows a warning within a box:

Failed to execute command "ice-firefox http://".
Failed to execute child process "ice-firefox" (No such file or directory)

I removed Ice from the software Centre and this has recently shown up

there doesn't seem to be a provision for uploading small jpegs from my PC that I can find on the forum, which would probably make things easier..how do you do this?
TIA

Advanced Topics / Encryption [Solved]
« on: September 10, 2016, 06:39:13 am »
Ok,
I have now realised that when PM7 was installed on my laptop, I never encrypted the Home Partition or the Swap partition.
Is there a way to do it now or do I need to re-install the OS?
Kicking myself... :-[

Have backed up stuff just in case..

« on: September 09, 2016, 02:44:11 am »
Is it safe to remove the brtfs tools?
How is this done?
is there anything I should be made aware of before doing so?

The file system is the default from live! installation which I think is EXT4
TIA
