I check the forum often but it's not so obvious when someone replies to this post. But that's great that you figured your issue out! Unfortunately, that is not the case for me. I have had this same problem with several fresh installs of P8, P9 and P10. I have confirmed that the camera is seen when listing the hardware. I'm not sure what else to try.

Hi justalexander3, I also have a 2012 laptop, mine is a Samsung, and I have lost the ability to use my camera and mic for fb video chats. I think it might have something to do with the newer kernels because it did work before, I just don't remember when because I hardly used the laptop for video chats. I may have had P 7 installed back then and I think I had to have all the settings in Skype set correctly. I was thinking about installing P 7 back into it. but it's working so good with P 9 I hate to mess with it and, like I said, I don't use the laptop for video chats.

I never had P7 so that sounds reasonable to me. I have had this laptop for a few years now. It was given to me and wasn't even usable with windows. I was going to throw it away. That's when I first discovered peppermint and installed P8. It was a great machine once again, even with only 2GB of RAM, and has been fine for all of my needs over the years. The Webcam didn't work from the start but I never needed it so it didn't bother me. I installed P9 on my Sony Vaio and had no issues with the webcam so I just assumed it was a driver or settings issue. I'm pretty sure I was able to get it to work at some point with a simple change but I can't remember and it's been wiped since.  I'm about to start teaching online so I need to find another option if I can't get this to work. I would certainly prefer to use this thinkpad though. I have not tried using the camera through either browsers recently though. I will give that a try. Thanks!

Sorry bout the duplicate post. You can tell I'm a newbie.

I did try

sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras ffmpeg vlc guvcview

No need for tab as far as I can tell but I'm not sure of any additional codecs you mentioned. After rebooting started both cheese and guvcview with no luck.

Terribly sorry guys! I posted this message and then immediately had a location change. I've been teaching overseas and now back home due to this virus situation. I'm back now and I appreciate any help!

Hardware / Webcam troubles - Device not found
« on: April 11, 2020, 07:17:56 pm »
Hello.

First time posting and still a beginner to Linux. I've been using peppermint since P8 and I love it. But always had a problem with the webcam on this laptop. I have searched and never found a solution. It always says device not found. No problem on my other laptop after installing cheese but never any luck with this one and now this is the only computer I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
