Hardware / Re: Webcam working then stops
« on: March 02, 2019, 09:07:35 am »
Hi  Alynur, thanks for your suggestion. Funnily enough my next step will be to load a full OS onto a usb as I find that easier than partitioning etc. I can then later when needed upgrade etc without trouble. I also agree it is a good way to try out a new distro or edition of the current OS. It will be interesting to see the difference between the live ISO and the full install  on a USB. I will even have the luxury of including full system encryption when installing.

My web cam is now working sometimes but  maybe an update of the driver may work. I will have to work out how to find the webcam name and the driver update.

In built web cam on MSI machine is not being picked up by PM 8 live USB. Actually, it starts off ok then drops and doesn't  come back. Used guv, cheese and VLC.

I have a f6 toggle on off but it does not bring it back.

Many thanks for the help. I have problems with my web cam. I will open another subject in the forum.

Agreed - It looks a little advanced for me to do a post install encryption.

Thanks for the link (I also read: (https://askubuntu.com/questions/284525/how-to-encrypt-full-disk-after-installing).

When I come to do a straight install later (on a  HDD or  using a USB) I may try to include the in-built encryption at the time of install. Is this available in PM as it is in Ubuntu?

Hi - I am  going to stick with PM8 Live ISO (and  one dual install) for the moment as I have it working well across three machines. I also prefer chromium to firefox which i find has many bugs. I hope PM continue to offer 32 bit.

On one machine I was going  to install and try to put /home on the HDD and / on the SDD but on trying this with an install on a USB I had problems with Gparted and it wasn't straight forward for myself as a beginner.

Eventually I will try and do a simple full install on three USB's and use these as everyday OS it avoids playing with partitions.

I also want to encrypt the installs on USB's. Is there a way to do this AFTER install? Or must encryption be done before and then install into the encrypted space? I think only LUKS or Veracrypt are capable?

Hello - sorry for the delay in replying:

Here is what is produced with nomodeset test:

This was with a live ISO of PM9.  Kernel 415043 generic i686 32 bit. gcc 730.   No persistence.

Please note it still hangs at start up (on a MSI laptop - 64 bit)

On changing to  quiet splash nomodeset --  The OS boots with no problems.

To produce a live ISO with persistence I have tried different data sticks, different PC's and different live ISO creator software (Live Linux, Unetbootin, Yumi and Mkusb).

All seem to stall at 'starting up'. Peppermint 8 works using the exact same techniques.

Yes - I will try the 64 bit with nomodeset and report back. With regards to Graphics drivers - a quick look around  a working live PM8  shows that some Nvida drivers are still missing. I am not sure how much persistence I have on this though so am wary of downloading the drivers.

I will check the secure boot setting as well on booting 64 bit PM9.

So you're saying Peppermint 9 32bit works on your i5 system, but Peppermint 9 64bit doesn't ?

Yes, that is correct for me. It is odd as I understand it should be the other way around as 64 bit is designed for i5 type machines?

I will try the nomodeset  test when I can put the PM  9  64 bit Live OS on a USB ( I have the 32 bit working at the moment). I will report back.

Thanks for the link on DATA partition. It looks useful.

PM8 2021
PM9 2023

I'm still running PM7 myself, also supported until 2021.

Thanks for that.

No, the point would be to try nomodeset in a PM9 live session not in PM8

Still wanna try ?

Is this a UEFI system, or Legacy BIOS ? .. what I'm asking is when you boot the PM9 LiveUSB are you booting it in UEFI mode or BIOS mode ?
(if unsure, do you see a menu with the Peppermint logo at the top, or do you see a GRUB menu ?)

Yes - my error I meant try with PM9.

So - at the moment I get the 'starting up' hang with PM9 64 bit. (The PM9  32 bit Live ISO  works  on at least one machine. An old netbook).

With the 64 bit version and a modern machine I see a list of options after booting into the Live ISO - ie Try Peppermint Live at the top with peppermint install lower down and a few other options including test the cd/USB etc.

Sure - I would like to try nomodeset on PM 8 in a live session. Let me have the instructions.
Until when is PM 8 supported?  and PM9. Thanks.

Well, after further attempts the PM9 32 bit worked on my  older netbook. I will try it on the more 'modern' MSI machine.

Do you know how to test the Peppermint 9 LiveUSB with the nomodeset kernel boot parameter set ?

Unfortunately not. It may be better to wait to see if PM10 solves this issue. Any ideas when it comes out?

In the meantime I may use PM8 and install it in such a way as too be able to take out the operating system only
and leave personal files and programs untouched when upgrading.

I really need something that works out of the packet like PM8  as I am trying to install across three machines and I want interoperability.  Also no permissions issues.

Thanks for the explanation of Kernel regression.

On trying again I was not able to produce a live ISO of PM9 (without persistence).

This was from PM 8 and using in turn two Live USB creators. One,  the PM 8 in-built USB creator and also
using mkusb. Both hung at the  'starting up' phase.
