New Users / getting an instruction cd to run
« on: February 16, 2018, 12:53:54 pm »
Hi,
I've just bought a new Lexmark MS317dn mono laser printer.  It comes with a cd which I assume contains instructions about setting the printer up.  When put the cd in my DVD player, a small name plate panel does come on screen. Now I can't get it to actually move forward.  Double left and right clicks by the mouse doesn't work.
So, what should I be doing, please?

Hooray, Hooray, Hooray!  That's it.  I have a working printer at last.  I was on the verge installing Windows again but now there's no need.

I can't thank you guys enough.  And if I could do something for you, I would.

Very best wishes,  flighty

Well, I am sorry that my problem hasn't been fully resolved.  Nevertheless, I want to offer my thanks to PCNetSpec for being so patient with somebody who must have seemed careless in his efforts.  In some mitigation, I shyly tell you that I am 82 years old and was never the sharpest knife in the drawer when I was young.
I do enjoy using Linux and thank all those who posted and read the thread.
Good luck.

Right, I started again by highlighting and pasting all the commands you listed.  This worked fine.  Unfortunately the test page didn't print.  I think we are nearly there - her's what I got; Will you specify the Device URI? [Y/n] ->n

Test Print? [y/N] ->y

wait 5s.
lpr -P HL5450DN /usr/share/cups/data/testprint
./linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1: line 2951: lpr: command not found
ls: cannot access '/etc/udev/rules.d/*.rules': No such file or directory
Hit Enter/Return key.

Hell, I've just realised that there is a colon after Sudo.  That must be the error.  I've had to struggle with the terminal - it took me a while to realise I could highlight and paste into the terminal.
I'm going to carry this on tomorrow.  I'm a bit tired now.

Well, I have made a little progress.  I didn't know which of the five or so downloads I needed , so I ponced about with the first two not knowing what I was doing. I then went to Peppermints 'configure printers' and tried again.  This time when I got to 'searching for drivers' on the foomatic thingy, I found that my Brother HL-5450DN was listed, which it wasn't before.
I thought I was there!  So I made the printer the default, typed a line of print on Writer and  hit ok.  Not a sound from Brother.  Checking Foomatic I found I had 'Transport endpoint is not connected'  Again.
What is this endpoint?  Can I fix that on its own?  I somehow think that might solve the problem.
Thanks for your posts by the way

Hi,
I've used synaptic to install anything concerning Brother laser printers, lpr and cups.  When I use 'configure printers' the foomatic offering is nothing like the model of printer that I have.  When I then try to use the wrong offering I get
'error during cups operation. Transport endpoint is not connected'.  'Unable to get queue details.  Treating queue as raw'

I would really appreciate some help here, please.

Well, I hope that's okay.  It doesn't make much sense to me but that's to be expected

Hi,
I hope I am not repeating a post.  Most times, when trying to receive mail, I get a 'failure of authentication' panel coming up. Every now and again, the panel will show and then the emails will pop up regardless.  I have checked my email details twice with my ISP but they say it isn't anything I'm doing wrong.

So I downloaded Claws email and with that I allways get the failure of authenticity and never get the emails.  I really would like a bit of guidance here, please.
