"Launch updater" under the help menu kicks out an error that the updater fails to start.

Can't really help with the ia32-libs thing until Peppermint 5 is released .. but once you get those installed, the rest should be the same.

[EDIT]

If I get the chance I'll look into the 14.04 ia32-libs issue in Lubuntu 14.04 later tonight .. but no promises, this is after all the "Peppermint" forum ;)
Understandable. Peppermint OS is still my favorite distro, but everyone I have come in contact running Guitar Pro 6, guitarix, Rosegarden, Jack, etc. seem to be using Ubuntu Studio (which I couldn't get to install on my computer) or vanilla Ubuntu. BTW, I seem to have found a solution. ia32-libs isn't needed at all. I just removed it and then installed the libportaudio0:i386, libportaudio2:i386, and libssl0.9.8:i386 packages. Things seem to be working, but I am not sure if all functionality is available yet.

Thanks for all of the help  ;D

Your call .. use whichever method/instructions suit you ;)

That is how to learn. I am doing a lot of learning right now, as I decided to do all of this on a vanilla Ubuntu 14.04 system. Unfortunately, for whatever moronic reason, Ubuntu changes things for the umpteenth time and I found that ia32-libs isn't available in 14.04. Soooo, I followed this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2218053, downloaded the package and tried to install it. The unfortunate results are as follows:
Code: [Select]

Thanks. Will give it a try later today  ;D

Thanks for the effort and the post. I have installed a pristine system and installed the bits and bobs that I needed before I jumped into this. In the mean time, I received  a posting from a hardware thread directing me to a posting along the same lines as what you are suggesting: http://paoloambrosio.net/2013/11/16/installing-guitarpro6-on-ubuntu-1310-saucy-64bit.html
There appear to be a couple of differences that I am unsure about. Lastly, I have the "full version" .deb file. Will that make a difference as to the instructions? Cheers.

52
If someone can bung a link to the trial on here, I'll see if I can tweak the dependencies and get it to work in 64bit.
Sounds good. Thanks for the initiative   :)

53
I prefer to stick with a 64-bit Peppermint OS (whether 4 or 5), but I have plenty of internal hard disks. I have considered installing elementary Linux or a vanilla Ubuntu, but I have been putting off this option as I have tried this once before and erased the working hard disk, rather than the intended hard disk. I have Peppermint OS 4, Salix and Win 7 installed  on my home built machine. How do I avoid formating the disks with Peppermint and Win 7? I am not sure where they are located.

I have gone into the grub menu edit mode under the individual menu items and my system looks like this:

Peppermint OS 4   -   hd1
Salix                    -   hd0
Ubuntu 12.04      -   hd2
Win 7         -   hd3

I am pretty sure that Ubuntu 12.04 is the the disk I reformatted, as the system can't find /home when it is booted up. Here are my concerns:

  • Installing to the correct hard disk.
  • Making sure I get a GRUB menu at startup (Ubuntu usually hides the menu).
  • Peppermint OS at the top of the list as the default system to boot into.
  • Removing all of the i386 libs that I just installed in my Peppermint OS system.

54
OK, no worries. Your effort is much appreciated.

It doesn't seem to be able to sort out the issue:
Code: [Select]
$ sudo dpkg -i gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb
Selecting previously unselected package guitarpro6.
Unpacking guitarpro6 (from gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of guitarpro6:
 guitarpro6 depends on gksu.

dpkg: error processing guitarpro6 (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils ...
Errors were encountered while processing:

OK, again the issue crept closer to a solution. Here is where I am now:
Code: [Select]
$ sudo aptitude install gksu:i386
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  gksu:i386 libaudit1:i386{a} libgksu2-0:i386{a} libgtop2-7:i386{ab} libpam-modules:i386{a} libpam0g:i386{a} libstartup-notification0:i386{a} libxcb-util0:i386{a} sudo:i386{ab}
0 packages upgraded, 9 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 897 kB of archives. After unpacking 3,168 kB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 sudo : Conflicts: sudo:i386 but 1.8.6p3-0ubuntu3 is to be installed.
 sudo:i386 : Conflicts: sudo but 1.8.6p3-0ubuntu3 is installed.
 libgtop2-7 : Conflicts: libgtop2-7:i386 but 2.28.4-3 is to be installed.
 libgtop2-7:i386 : Depends: libgtop2-common:i386 (>= 2.28.4-3) which is a virtual package.
                   Conflicts: libgtop2-7 but 2.28.4-3 is installed.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

     Keep the following packages at their current version:
1)     gksu:i386 [Not Installed]
2)     libgksu2-0:i386 [Not Installed]
3)     libgtop2-7:i386 [Not Installed]
4)     sudo:i386 [Not Installed]

     Leave the following dependencies unresolved:
5)     libgksu2-0:i386 recommends sudo:i386
Unfortunately I don't have an overview of the consequences of these actions. Any ideas? After this gets resolved, I should be able to try to install Guitar Pro 6 again.

Many thanks. That solved most of the problem:
Code: [Select]
$ sudo dpkg -i gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb
Selecting previously unselected package guitarpro6.
(Reading database ... 263980 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking guitarpro6 (from gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of guitarpro6:

 guitarpro6 depends on libportaudio0.
 guitarpro6 depends on libportaudio2.

dpkg: error processing guitarpro6 (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 guitarpro6
I then tried the following:
Code: [Select]
$ sudo apt-get install libportaudio0:i386 libportaudio2:i386
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 guitarpro6:i386 : Depends: gksu:i386 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

Then I tried:
Code: [Select]
$ sudo apt-get -f install
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Correcting dependencies... Done
The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:
  libaudit1:i386 libpam-modules:i386 libpam0g:i386 libportaudio0:i386 libstartup-notification0:i386 libxcb-util0:i386 sudo:i386
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove it.
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libportaudio0:i386 libportaudio2:i386
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  guitarpro6:i386 sudo
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libportaudio0:i386 libportaudio2:i386
0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 2 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0 B/89.4 kB of archives.
After this operation, 109 MB disk space will be freed.

Is there a way that I can force the system to keep and use sudo while installing gksu as required by Guitar Pro 6? Why does apt insist on uninstalling guitarpro6:i386?

Software & Applications / Trying to install Guitar Pro 6 for Linux
« on: May 14, 2014, 05:57:50 am »
I seem to remember that it is possible to install 32-bit libs on a 64-bit system...
First I tried the following:
Code: [Select]
$ sudo dpkg -i gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb
Selecting previously unselected package guitarpro6.
(Reading database ... 262363 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking guitarpro6 (from gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of guitarpro6:
guitarpro6 depends on gksu.
guitarpro6 depends on libasound2.
guitarpro6 depends on libc6 (>= 2.1.3).
guitarpro6 depends on libglu1-mesa.
guitarpro6 depends on libportaudio0.
guitarpro6 depends on libportaudio2.
guitarpro6 depends on libssl0.9.8.
guitarpro6 depends on libstdc++6.
guitarpro6 depends on libxml2.
guitarpro6 depends on libxslt1.1.
guitarpro6 depends on zlib1g.

dpkg: error processing guitarpro6 (--install):
dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
guitarpro6

Next, I tried this:
Code: [Select]
$ sudo apt-get install gksu libasound2 libc6 libglu1-mesa libportaudio0 libportaudio2 libssl0.9.8 libstdc++6 libxml2 libxslt1.1 zlib1g
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
gksu is already the newest version.
libglu1-mesa is already the newest version.
libglu1-mesa set to manually installed.
libportaudio2 is already the newest version.
libstdc++6 is already the newest version.
libxslt1.1 is already the newest version.
zlib1g is already the newest version.
libasound2 is already the newest version.
libasound2 set to manually installed.
libc6 is already the newest version.
libxml2 is already the newest version.
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
guitarpro6:i386 : Depends: gksu:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libasound2:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libc6:i386 (>= 2.1.3) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libglu1-mesa:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libportaudio0:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libportaudio2:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libssl0.9.8:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libstdc++6:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxml2:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxslt1.1:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: zlib1g:i386 but it is not going to be installed

Then I received the following reply from Guitar Pro support:
Quote
Thank you for contacting the Arobas Music support.

I am sorry but Guitar Pro 6 is not supported with Linux 64 bit, only Ubuntu 32 bit.

Can I install these libs as 32-bit versions on my 64-bit system? I am also concerned they insist on installing gksu as it seems to remove sudo, which I am not too thrilled about to put it mildly...
Any ideas?
