Software & Applications / Applications Menu
« on: March 09, 2017, 07:00:57 am »
I have decided to customize the look of my desktop. Casting my mind back to Peppermint 6, I preferred the simple LXDE menu style to the current whisker menu.

I removed the whisker menu and added an applications menu. While I still have some customizations to do.... there is a label that says "no applications found' any ideas what this is, and how do i remove it?

I worked it out. Woohoo!

I opened the config file from the command line with

$ sudo pluma /usr/share/peppermint/peppermint-control-center/xbindkeys.conf

I removed the two entries for 'scrot' and replaced them with:

"xfce4-screenshooter"
   Print

Saved and restarted the computer and all worked fine, including xfce4-screeshooter via my PrtScr key.

Software & Applications / xfce4-screenshooter (Solved)

Hello,

Having browsed the forum, I can see posts regarding this simple screenshooter program that relate to PeppermintOS 6. But nothing more immediate.

I prefer xfce4-screenshooter as I can capture a specific region of my screen, and immediately post the image to share with friends. It works great with PeppermintOS 7, so where do I need help?

Well that is in the keyboard mapping. I cannot assign PrtScr key from the Peppermint Control Center. I click add+, enter the command, but cannot assign the correct keyboard shortcut. I can assign something like CTRL+SHFT+S.

Is there a way to map the PrtScr that I have missed. Maybe there is a manual of command line method?

Software & Applications / Mounter/Flash Drive Controller

Hello All,

Finally got Peppermint OS 7 fine tuned to how I like it, but one thing is missing for me.

Is it possible to add a plugin to the system tray to control usb drives. Mount/Unmount/Open etc.....

Thanks

Where can I get 0.12.3  to test ?

[EDIT]

I take it you've installed pychess_0.12.3-1_all.deb from here
http://www.pychess.org/download/
?

Are the suggested packages gir1.2-gstreamer-1.0 and gir1.2-gst-plugins-base-1.0 also installed ?
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install gir1.2-gstreamer-1.0 gir1.2-gst-plugins-base-1.0

Yes That was the correct file and source. I thought I was being clever, checked Pychess with Lubuntu, and the problem was the same. Checked with Ubuntu and sound worked fine. Guessed there were files missing.... but many thanks for the command line.

Much appreciated.

Update:

Pychess - From the software centre works fine (v.0.12.1). The sounds work ok.

But the SF version was superseded. A new version that auto saves internet games is available from Pychess (v.0.12.3). It is this late. st edit that i am having sounds issues with. Only in Peppermint OS though.

What are you running Peppermint on? / Re: My Own Build with AMD A6
« on: June 19, 2016, 11:51:29 am »
I was using an old HP desktop but decided to build a budget PC. Gigabyte Motherboard, AMD Processor, 8gb Ram and 500GB HDrive and Hey Presto!

BTW, Peppermint 7 should run hideously fast on your new rig !

Let us know if you notice a difference.  It'll be available for download soon.

P7 is tentatively scheduled to be released on 30-Jun-2016 ...

I look forward to the release, I am no expert but would love to see any beta. I am having an issue with a chess program I use, that may work better on P7. (or not at all  ;) ) .

I can test and report if you want. Happy to give back, although may need a bit of guidance at times.

Software & Applications / Pychess (Solved)

I am a big, big, chess player! Since ditching windows I rely on limited resources. But Pychess is an excellent little program I use to access FICS.

Generally it works well, but it doesn't play nice with the Peppermint-Dark theme, so I had to return to Peppermix. No big deal, I like that theme also.

I do have a small problem though. The sound files do not work. Usually there are sounds that help signal a move being played, a games starting etc. These are useful when doing more than one thing at a time.

I noticed they are all greyed out by the program and thought there may be an issue with sound drivers. I just joined the Peppermint ranks from Elementary OS, and it works 100% with Freya, so I ask for help.

Note: You cannot check the Play Sounds option.

I use Guayadeque as a music player, for easy access to Shoutcast. Sounds play ok there. I removed Pulse Audio to use gnome-alsamixer but no sound at all then. So returned to Pulse Audio and consulted the experts - you guys.  :)

Hope you can help.

Hi,

I was using an old HP desktop but decided to build a budget PC. Gigabyte Motherboard, AMD Processor, 8gb Ram and 500GB HDrive and Hey Presto!

I must admit to experimenting with linux versions. Elementary to Manjaro, Lunbuntu, Kubuntu..... Linux Mint for a long time when I had the HP!! But stumbled upon Peppermint scanning through Distrowatch.

Because it's a light distro very fast. Plenty to learn to install some favourite programs.

Needed wine for Stronghold Crusader (an oldie but a goodie).

All good so far.
