I want to learn and understand How can I plan Linux partition during installation. I have two real life scenarios I think over it right now when I do dual boot between Linux and Windows and other one is when I install Linux standalone. It should be easy to re-install or upgrade OS or Some issue with OS and our important data should be save when I am doing such things. No need to re-install application if OS re-install or upgrade with same distro. What is best practices for the same.

Scenario:Dual Boot with Windows

Partition Type      Required or Not    File System     Recommended Mini. &
                                                                                            Max. Size

6.Any other

Scenario:Standalone Linux

Partition Type      Required or Not    File System  Recommended Mini.
                                                                                         & Max. Size

6.Any other

I request you please give your input if I had missed something in this case.

PCNetSpec, You are right splashtop Personal works like VNC (Server & Client)  & Symantec PCAnyWhere. I used a Lot Symantec Pcanywhere earlier to Support computers in LAN.

In my Network I have Windows 2012 Server as Terminal Server and more than 200 users connect to this server using Microsoft Remote Desktop client app. I'm planning to move my all old XP License computer with Linux OS or with embedded Linux Dump terminal. For that I need good RDP app and lightweight Linux (Which can embed in Flush Drive of 1 GB or 2 GB)  which is as good as Microsoft remote Desktop client to connect windows server. Right now I'm in RND (Research and Development) and testing Process.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi PCNetSpec,

In India Teamviewer/Ammyy/LogmeIn is very popular for remote support.

TeamViewer and Ammyy is free for Home and Personal Use. TeamViewer is very good and it is available for Linux as well.

Hi emegra You are right Remmina is working fine with Windows Server2003. But it  gives issue with Windows 2012 Server and Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 use version 8 of the Remote Desktop Protocol. However, older RDP clients that don't support RDP 8.0 can still connect to Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8, but they won't take advantage of new RDP 8.0 features, such as user experience and WAN optimization improvements.

For the best experience, use RDP 8.0. It's a part of Windows 8 and will also be available as an update for Windows 7 at some point in the future, after general availability of Windows Server 2012.

And Remmina available in software update Manager is and it is working fine with older version but  It has lot off issue with Windows new versions. Remmina had released Version 1.2.

As per web link instruction How to install Version 1.2. First Remove Older Version.

To install it, just copy and paste the following three lines on a terminal window

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:remmina-ppa-team/remmina-next
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install remmina remmina-plugin-rdp libfreerdp-plugins-standard

I had just install this version on my laptop and it is working fine right now. I'll see what happen during the day.

Hi Everybody,

I’m  using Peppermint 6  and Linux Mint 17.2 for testing I don’t face any issue during installation .but I’m facing issue regarding RDP Session with Windows 2012 Server like freezing/hang/disconnect session/Reversing Caps Key when using Remmina . I had tried Remmina and Vinagre apps both have some bugs or limitation. Vinagre is performing better than remmina. There are any other apps which better and bug free it can be use in production environment with windows servers.

Hi AndyinMokum, Thanks again for sharing information.

I want to share one New that Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narender Modi planning to take decision regarding Linux that "Made In India Operating System BOSS May Soon Replace Microsoft Windows At All Govt Offices. When it comes to Make in India mission, then why only manufacturing and services? Indian Government wants to use Make in India operating systems as well."

In a new development, it has been revealed that Indian Govt. may replace Microsoft Windows Operating System across all offices with their own, open source OS called Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS). For the last three months, vigorous testing was in progress, and the results are satisfactory. In fact, even Indian Army couldn’t break the code of BOSS.

This week, a high level meeting will be conducted by Union Home Ministry, and a higher, advanced version of BOSS would be unveiled. Announcements regarding replacing Windows OS can be taken during this meeting.

This goes perfectly in line with earlier Govt. order making it mandatory to use only open source software in Govt. offices.

This decision will change the future of Linux community in India and view point of Indian users.

First of all, Thanks you   PCNetSpec/ AndyInMokum/Slim.Fatz/s4w3d0ff for sharing your side of story and your perspective. It is always good to know about other side of coin and others experience.  We can learn from it.

Agree and disagree   doesn’t matter if intention is right. You people have right intention.

“Because one believes in oneself, one doesn't try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn't need others' approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.” – Lao Tzu

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” ― Wayne W. Dyer

I don’t know much about Linux community.  Sometime I perceive it like freedom fighter against property software sometime group of techie having spirituals and satisfaction experience doing this. Sometime it looks money and power game. Sometime it seems community service it is not about money and open sources tells different story.  Every distro seem like Alexander Graham Bell make own telephone again and again. I don’t understand how they get so much motivation to do all this. Please correct my understanding, If I’m wrong.

I don’t know much about Python or shell scripting right now. But I heard about Linux OS post installation scripts templates where we can add desire software list and run that It will install all application on one click. If somebody share related information and script template with me it will be very helpful.

Thanks for sharing Knowledge with me.

Rajeev Gautam

My focus and purpose for this post is to draw this community intention to this raw area. I gave software list for example only. I’m not talking about software and property software I had mentioned in my post.

After putting lot of time and efforts in last 8 to 9 months I had learned to do all this things my own.
The question came into my mind why any home user and business user or designer or multimedia users put so much time to learn all this.

For non-techie, Semi- techie computer users, choosing the best Distro/Hardware/Installing OS/choosing and installing their area application and then learn to use that application is daunting and frustrating, exercise.

That’s why everyone talks about Linux, Write about Linux, Experiment with Linux and at end day again start using Windows, Mac, and Android on his desktop, Laptop, Tablet, Mobile in most cases in desktop and laptop with dual boot.  Small and midsize businesses are not willing to put time and efforts to use Linux. If I try to see other way it is everywhere from watch to rocket.  It made me confused and imaged as well. Why this community had not able to made OS for Laptop and Desktop which is better and easy to use for normal to advance user and work on any hardware. May be lot of peoples are not convinced with my point of view in this.

Any way thanks for your reply and guidance. "Keep going your good work and efforts, One day it will make a difference in this world".

This is my First Post to this Linux Forum. Last Few Months I start using Linux mint and planning to move peppermint Linux. Before that I was using Windows since 18 Years. Starting months of Linux world was confusing and unclear because so many distributions so many Desktop management interfaces and everybody claiming he is better and superior than other. few people hate windows few people hate other Linux distribution. Everybody talking about big issues and totally ignores small and basic things and lots of bugs. I don't understand why people feel proud doing easy things in difficult ways. After wasting so much valuable time I found Linux Mint and lubuntu. they are one of the best Linux distro I found. Peppermint Linux flavor of  both. They are doing great work with easy and simple way.

I understand Linux distro come with Pre-install application but they are not according to the market demand or people want in real life . Linux  install in 20 min. and user waste 3 to 4 hours to do more 20 things to do after installation.
I’m writing down some of steps most user do,  May be there on ways or may be there personal preference before using Linux. Same things writing down on Linux blog about these , how to do it, why to do it. Why can’t we find mechanism to make it or done in few clicks.

1. Update the system
2. Install browsers Crome/Firefox
3. Get old wallpapers
4. Install Flash Player
5. Install multimedia codecs
6. Install Dropbox
7. Skype
8. Install rar and other archiving utilities
9. Install a clipboard manager
10. Tweak the desktop Shortcut keys
   10.1. System information (hardinfo) Ctrl-Shift-S
10.2 To Kill Hang application Ctrl-Shift-X
            10.3 To Check HardUsages RAM/CPU/Harddisk Ctrl-Shift-Esc
10.4 To Shutdown and Restart or Lock computer Ctrl-shift-del .
10.5 To open file Manager ctrl+F
10.6 To Open Network Place ctrl+N

11. Optimise font and Microsoft font
12. Guake dropdown terminal
13. Uget download manager
14. BitTorrent client
15. Hardinfo - System information tool
16. Install Conky
17. Install some games
18. Support for Java applets on Google Chrome/Chromium
19. Grub Customizer - Modify GRUB boot menu settings
20. Team viewer - remote desktop
21. Audacity - Audio editor
22. Inkscape - Graphics and image editing
23. Gparted - Partition editor
24. Linrunner TLP - Power management tool. Useful to save power on laptops
25. Virtualbox - Virtualization
26 Kazam, recordMyDesktop - Desktop recording/screencasting
27. Remmina and rdesktop GUI
28 playwithlinux

I understand some Linux Freedom fighter argues and gives these logics
1.   Linux is all about freedom. Freedom of choice Linux does come with what most users need not every user.
2.    Linux is not free windows
3.    Linux has choice. You can choose a distro  that suit you need.
4.   You choose a Desktop that suits your preference and then you customize to fit you like glove.
5.   Windows is the big store chain clothing and linux is the tailor shop.
6.   If distro use google (crome) or Microsoft (skype) or Microsoft font or flash player. I would drop using distro.

Suggestion why can’t we categories users and their need of application preference as given below and script it:-

1.   Home User
2.    Home User + Gamer
3.   Business and Enterprise User
4.   Designer (CAD)+Multimedia User

And these category should have app belong to according to distro think and popular choices. If user click on these option its pop with form which shows some apps click according to distro by default and some optional according popular choice. As user click ok it install all apps user want and requires in one go.
And Why not distro make some standard with Short Cut Key for basic thing which user need not to configure by normal user by it is own. If advance user wants to change according there need they can.

This is my personal view and suggestion only if you think it is worth to consider it you should be and if not ignore it.
