Installed all the updates and everything is fine now.

Hello:

The subject says it all - I can hardly read my screen because it is so dim. Pepperment 8 was fine.

Any suggestions or should I just revert to 8?

As far as I know, I set up only one password during the install and that was for user "rob".

Is there a default pw for user "root"?

There should definitely be a space between cifs and credentials....

As an EXAMPLE, this was a working CIFS mount for my NAS (before I switched to NFS)

Thanks, PCNetSpec, I have now fixed that. Here is my present fstab entry, which throws an error at sudo mount -a:

//192.168.100.17/Seagate_Backup_2AXK2 /media/SeagateBU cifs credentials=/home/rob/.smbcredentials,iocharset=uft8,gid=1000,uid=1000,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

sudo mount -a results in:
Code: [Select]
rob@rob-ThinkPad-T520 ~ $ sudo mount -a
mount error(79): Can not access a needed shared library
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

Here is the entirety of what I did:

I have connected my Seagate Backup Plus to my D-Link 850L router using the USB cable provided.

I followed this tutorial: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/08/map-network-drive-onto-ubuntu-14-04/

I then ran the following commands in the terminal:

sudo mkdir /media/SeagateBU
sudo apt-get install cifs-utils
sudo gedit /etc/nsswitch.conf

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns
change it into:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] wins dns

sudo apt-get install libnss-winbind winbind

gedit ~/.smbcredentials

   username=rob
   password=test

Then I added the following to my fstab file:
//192.168.100.17/Seagate_Backup_2AXK2 /media/SeagateBU cifs credentials=/home/rob/.smbcredentials,iocharset=uft8,gid=1000,uid=1000,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

Then ran: sudo mount -a and got this error msg:
rob@rob-ThinkPad-T520 ~ $ sudo mount -a
mount error(79): Can not access a needed shared library
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

Yep, that was the problem.

I had the following line in my fstab file:

//192.168.0.1/Seagate_Backup_2AXK2 /media/SeagateBU cifscredentials=/home/rob/.smbcredentials,iocharset=uft8,gid=0,uid=0,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

Changed it to:
#//192.168.0.1/Seagate_Backup_2AXK2 /media/SeagateBU cifscredentials=/home/rob/.smbcredentials,iocharset=uft8,gid=0,uid=0,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

Guess I need to do more googling on how to setup my Seagate Backup Plus unit on my D-Link 850L router.

Note: From googling the error msg, I think that the problem lies in the 'fstab' file where I made changes to add a router-USB mounted backup drive. How do I access the etc/fstab file on sda5 after booting from the dvd?

Sorry but I don't think that I am doing this correctly...

When I boot into 'Live' and do sudo fdisk -l, I just see the dvd - that is not what you want, right?

What do I need to do to get what you want?

Thank you for responding. :)

I have a dual-boot system and my boot menu has advanced menu options for Peppermint which shows 4.10.0-38, 4.10.0-37 & 4.8..0-53 each with generic, upstart & recovery.

Selecting any of these still results in Emergency mode.

Is this what you mean?
