Software & Applications / Trouble with Java settings Geany
« on: July 16, 2020, 12:27:50 pm »
Hello there!

Good news is that I've been having no problems with Peppermint for a long time now (hence, my absence).   :)

However, I've got a wee problem with setting up Geany for Java, as the banner says...   ???

I'll be taking a Uni course on OOP, which is in Java.  Which I've not yet worked with.
So, I wanted to get a head start on learning something about Java.

Compiling:  Nooooo problem!
Running the program is when I got ...
Code: [Select]
Error: Could not find or load main class
I did find out that I need to set a class path.  Found out what it is and why I need and all that useful stuff.

But I couldn't find anything helpful online about how to set that in Linux.    :-\

Could someone familiar with Geany and Java give me a nudge in the right direction for that?

I did try ...
Code: [Select]
java -cp "/usr/share/java" "%e"... in th execute portion of the Execution commands, but that didn't work.

Thank you ever so much, whoever could help me in advance...   8)

Software & Applications / Re: Trouble with Geany Plugins on my laptop...
« on: December 16, 2019, 10:42:13 pm »
Hi, Slim.Fatz:

No such luck!

Tried to fix packages and nothing happened.

Did a complete removal of Geany via Synaptics, then a reinstall.  Twice...

Still can't access any plugins after installing some.

Just seems odd that it worked on my desktop but plugins just won't appear on my laptop.   ???

Nothing there I really need to have, though, so I'm not too worried about it...

Hi Mynaardt,

Thanks for the clarification! Try this (if you have not tried it already): open synaptic and click on the Reload button (in upper left corner). After the reload finishes, click on the menu item named Edit (at the top of the synaptic window), then click on the item in the drop-down list named Fix Broken Packages and see if this solves your problem. If it does not, then I would try removing them and then re-installing them from within synaptic.

Regards,

Software & Applications / Re: Trouble with Geany Plugins on my laptop...
« on: December 14, 2019, 09:27:15 am »
Hi Slim.Fatz:

Sorry about that, I probably should've posted that earlier in the day...   ::)

But anyway...

First of all, I tried to install Geany plugins some time back.  Unfortunately I can't remember if I did that via the terminal, the software manager or synaptic.

But when I open Geany, and go to the edit menu, the plugin preferences option is greyed out so that I cannot select it.

So, I tried looking up 'geany-plugin' in Synaptic, and instead of the usual yellow plus for uninstalled or white check on green for installed, all I get is a blue box with an exclamation mark.

When I try marking those for updating, I just get an error message about broken dependencies or some such.

Just seems a bit odd, because I'm only having this problem with my ThinkPad laptop, and not my desktop machine.

Everything else seems to work just fine in Geany on my laptop otherwise.  I just can't seem to access plugins at all for some reason.

Should I reinstall Geany from scratch, perhaps?  And if so, should I use the terminal/ppa thing, snap, synaptic, or the software manager?

Hardly a life and death thing, but it would be nice to be able to use plug ins.

Thanks!

I look in Synaptic, and it seems to tell me I've installed the plugins, but I get a lot of exclamation marks on Geany plugins on a search, which seems to indicate something's amiss.

Hi Mynaardt,

Could you explain that a bit more clearly? Where are you performing the search? In synaptic:-\

Software & Applications / Trouble with Geany Plugins on my laptop...
« on: December 13, 2019, 11:53:19 pm »
Hi, All!

I've been happily using Geany for a while now, on Peppermint 9.

Funny thing is, though, I had no problem getting and using Geany plugins for my desktop computer.

But for some odd reason, I can't seem to get them to work for Geany on my laptop.

I look in Synaptic, and it seems to tell me I've installed the plugins, but I get a lot of exclamation marks on Geany plugins on a search, which seems to indicate something's amiss.

Anyway, except for Geany plugins, which don't seem to work at all on my laptop, everything else in Geany seems to be working fine.

Anyone knows why this might be?  And if so, how can I fix it?

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion / Re: Best Browser
« on: February 26, 2019, 12:10:57 am »
To get my own two cents worth in here, I've taken up to using both Vivaldi and Falkon as a matter of course.

Vivaldi, written by those who first wrote Opera, works just fine with google pages and such.  And does not use as much RAM as either Chromium or Firefox.

The main reason I use Falkon is because of the 2 GB RAM limitation on my netbook.  If I use Vivaldi, Chromium, or Firefox on that netbook, it runs painfully slow because of the RAM burden.  But Falkon uses way less RAM, which works out well on that one netbook.

I prefer all the features of Vivaldi.  Falkon, of course, lacks the same amount of bells and whistles.  But it works surprisingly well on most pages I've ever ever tried it on.

Development / ICE with Falkon or Midori?
« on: February 02, 2019, 12:56:21 am »
Any plans to allow ICE to work with either of the lightweight browsers Falkon or Midori?

Both those browsers lack the bells and whistles of Chromium, Firefox, or VIvaldi.  On the other hand, I used those two rather a lot on my Samsung Netbook with its maxed out 2GB RAM.

Anyway, just a thought.  I thought it would be nice if ICE could be made to work with those light weight browsers.

Hi, All...

Should've posted this sooner, but I've been busy and/or chronically stunned.    ::)

But anyway...

I ended up buying a USB BlueTooth adaptor.  It works just fine.  As soon as I opened up the BlueTooth manager with that adaptor plugged in everything worked!

Huzzah!

Hardware / Re: Questions concerning a new SSD installation
« on: January 19, 2019, 10:48:43 pm »
The installer should do the whole thing for you.  I put an SSD in a notebook I've got and the installer did the the whole works for me pretty as you please.

No need to do anything special, really.  Just so long as you can boot up with the ISO (CD, DVD or USB stick), you should be fine...

Unfortunately, that little netbook is already at maximum RAM capacity.  Oh well.  As I said, it was a freebie, so I ought not complain about it...

Hi Bigoeuf:

I'll look into that, but I think my best bet might just buying an adaptor.  I have a laptop (well, two if you include the old one), a netbook, and a desktop.

So I figure that would be the easiest way for me to use Bluetooth devices.  I'll just need to price them out around here...

Oh well, can't have everything, I guess.

I'll look around to see what's available around here in the way of a Bluetooth adaptor.

At least I could use that on between more than one machine.

A skinflint?  Moi?  No, never.  No!  Yes.  A bit...   ;)

No sign of a Bluetooth chip there I'm afraid  :(

So, what should I be looking for to say yae or nay to having Bluetooth?

All you need is a usb Bluetooth dongle something like this

Hi, pin & emegra:

Clearly I did not know that Bluetooth is not a common thing in laptops.

Anyway, here is the lspci output from my netbook.  I'll have to look at my ThinkPad a bit later, as I'm at the University at the moment.  So, what should I be looking for to say yae or nay to having Bluetooth?

Thanks for your time!

Unfortunately, most of those menu items, when I run the Bluetooth manager are greyed out.

The only things not greyed out and usable are the menu items "view" and "help".  And everything on the toolbar is greyed out.

I didn't see anything mentioning Bluetooth in my inxi -F output (below).

So either I don't have a Bluetooth adaptor, or, I just don't know how to activate it.

Is there some way I can figure out if I even have one or not?
And if I do one that's not running, how do I switch it on?

Thanks for your time, emegra

Software & Applications / How do you run Bluetooth anyway? [SOLVED]
« on: January 18, 2019, 10:17:51 pm »
Hi, All.

I recently bought a Bluetooth speaker.  Just because.

Thing is, I've never used Bluetooth before.

Someone quickly showed me how to connect it using his phone.

I have the general idea about searching for a Bluetooth device, but I can't seem to duplicate this process on my laptop...   :'(

Anyway, if someone could help clue me in on how to use Bluetooth, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
