New Users / Re: mouse wheel jitter making scrolling virtually impossible
« on: December 20, 2017, 06:02:38 pm »
Yup, that was it!   Thanks!

Hi, as the title says, my mouse wheel scroll seems to go randomly up and down when rolling it, usually only showing a slight bias towards going the direction I want it to go.  Its an external wireless mouse.   Here's the lsusb on report for it:

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:c534 Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver

Any ideas how to fix?

New Users / simple screen blanking
« on: October 16, 2017, 05:17:03 am »
I like to listen to audios thru my computer at night to get to sleep.   I did put a wallpaper up that was pretty dark.  Now for some reason, it's putting up google photos as a screensaver and they are quite bright making it difficult to sleep.   What would be preferable is to be able to just have the screen go black.  I tried setting that in the power manager but it seems to be being ignored.  Also, in the distant past when I did manage to get it to do something like that when it blanked my screen it also killed my sound (as my speakers are integrated into the monitor).

First how do I get rid of these damn google photos?

Second, how can I make the screen go black after a few minutes without it killing my sound?

New Users / Re: middle mouse button stopped working on scroll bar
« on: October 12, 2017, 06:40:10 pm »
Middle mouse button ? .. doesn't the left mouse button anywhere on a scrollbar do that ?

Actually it only scrolls up or down one page with the left mouse button.

I've also noticed the highlight and squirt feature of the middle mouse button doesn't work either.

Since its a clickable scroll wheel, it still works for scrolling when unclicked.

Okay you'll have to forgive me for being dense but which application are we talking about .. when I open say a three page libreoffice document and click at left-click the top/bottom of the scroolbar it goes completely to the top/bottom of the document not just the page I'm on :-\

I also have no idea what "highlight and squirt feature" means ? .. unless you mean that the middle mouse button pastes what was last highlighted, which is working perfectly for me ???

Yes, and the middle mouse button fails to work in all apps for me.   Fails to paste what was last highlighted and fails to jump to the place in the document where you middle-click on the scroll bar.   Seems to me like it used to work so I was thinking it was a settings issue.

I'm using an external mouse instead of the synaptic touch pad.

Here's my X log

New Users / middle mouse button stopped working on scroll bar
« on: October 08, 2017, 04:42:08 pm »
When you click the middle mouse button on the scroll bar in most Linuxen it jumps you to that point in the document.   For instance if you click on the top of the scroll bar you instantly go to the top.  Middle, middle, etc...  It seems this used to work for me on peppermint but now it doesn't.  Probably an upgrade... or a cosmic ray... nuked it.   Any idea where I should look for a setting for this to see if it got disabled somehow?

TIA,
-Kevin

New Users / Sound mixer volume won't stay maxed out
« on: July 25, 2017, 04:41:15 am »
I click on the speaker icon in the panel and Audio Mixer and under playback->volume control->firefox (for example) and set the slider all the way to the right, like for instance while I am watching youtube videos, and if I so much as touch the volume control on the player or use the keys on my laptop to adjust it, it always falls back to what it considers 100% (way below its capabilities) and can't be adjusted back up without going back to the audio mixer.   This gets to be a real pain in the ass when you're trying to watch a video with a large dynamic of sound where sometimes you would want to turn it down to prevent blowing out your speakers and turn it back up again when there is really quiet dialog.

Is there any way to make the audio mixer say 100% where its really 100% (instead of about 60% of the ACTUAL max volume)?   Or at least let it adjust back beyond "100%" when you have used the mixer to set it beyond that?

New Users / spell checker quit in firefox (solved)

Hi, my spell checker seems to have quit in firefox.   Any idea how I can re-enable it?   I went into preferences, advanced settings and enabled it.

When I run it from a terminal it shows:

New Users / help with printer
« on: July 20, 2016, 11:22:57 pm »
I have a dell v305 printer (which is a rebranded lexmark  x4650) I'm trying to get running via usb.   I follow this page (closest thing I can find):

http://askubuntu.com/questions/207214/ubuntu-12-04-driver-for-lexmark-x4650

When I go to print a test page, I get filter failed

Here's the cups error log:

New Users / Re: emacs menu entry missing

so does running:
Code: [Select]
/usr/bin/emacs24
start up emacs GUI ?

and does running:
Code: [Select]
/usr/bin/emacs24 -nw
open emacs CLI (terminal version) ?

those both run the CLI version

Good question Andy, I seem to remember sommat similar happening in PM6, but the .desktop files exist in PM7.

Anyway, try this

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/emacs24.desktop
and when a BLANK file opens, make it read:
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=GNU Emacs 24 (GUI)
GenericName=Text Editor
Comment=GNU Emacs is an extensible, customizable text editor - and more
MimeType=text/english;text/plain;text/x-makefile;text/x-c++hdr;text/x-c++src;text/x-chdr;text/x-csrc;text/x-java;text/x-moc;text/x-pascal;text/x-tcl;text/x-tex;application/x-shellscript;text/x-c;text/x-c++;
TryExec=/usr/bin/emacs24
Exec=/usr/bin/emacs24 %F
Icon=emacs24
Type=Application
Terminal=false
Categories=Utility;Development;TextEditor;
StartupWMClass=Emacs24
Keywords=Text;Editor;
SAVE the file and exit gedit/pluma.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/emacs24-term.desktop
when a BLANK file opens, make it read:-
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=GNU Emacs 24 (Terminal)
GenericName=Text Editor
Comment=GNU Emacs is an extensible, customizable text editor - and more
MimeType=text/english;text/plain;text/x-makefile;text/x-c++hdr;text/x-c++src;text/x-chdr;text/x-csrc;text/x-java;text/x-moc;text/x-pascal;text/x-tcl;text/x-tex;application/x-shellscript;text/x-c;text/x-c++;
TryExec=/usr/bin/emacs24
Exec=/usr/bin/emacs24 -nw %F
Icon=emacs24
Type=Application
Terminal=true
Categories=Utility;Development;TextEditor;
Keywords=Text;Editor;
SAVE the file and exit gedit/pluma.

Now check the two emacs menu items
menu > Programming > GNU Emacs 24 (GUI)
and
menu > Programming > GNU Emacs 24 (Terminal)
work ?

Yes, that worked, thanks.  ;D

Actually, I spoke too soon.   The menu entries are there but do not work.  The console version launches a terminal at the shell.   The /usr/bin/emacs24 binary is there and it will launch in a terminal from a terminal and that's all
