General Discussion / Re: Photography in Linux

It gets me out and about to places I wouldn't otherwise go.  We have the wonderful Essex Wildlife Trust and there is free access to all their reserves.  We have our own nature reserve where I live which is the other side of town.  There and back is about a 5 mile walk along a river walk.  Often meet up with other photographers for a ramble or go somewhere interesting to take photos (or capture images as its now called ).

General Discussion / Photography in Linux

I have always had an interest in photography and Linux has just enhanced my interest even further with the amazing photo processing software that is available in the repositories.  Today was a first for me and something I have been trying to achieve for ages, catch a photo of a dragonfly in flight.

Its not perfect and I have cropped and edited it Darktable (using Peppermint 9)  but this little Migrant Hawker made my day  :)

Also check that you are allowing access through any fire walls on the computers and router.

I am sitting here at the moment typing this on a Inspiron 1501 which I upgraded to a TL60 a while ago.  Also upgraded to 4 gb of ram.  They are solid old laptops and this one doubles up as a music server so is left running most of the day.  Presently running Peppermint 8 with the 4.4.0 -131 kernel.  Had to uninstall the newer kernels because of same problem with shutting down and it didn't run so good.

Be careful that it doesn't overheat with the TL60.  Mine has done but  I have installed indicator-cpufreq which I keep set to on demand most of the time which helps it to run cooler.

Not sure if it will work but you can try disabling the guest login

Go to the login screen using ctrl+alt+f2 and login as described by Zebedeeboss

at the command prompt type
Code: [Select]
sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

change the line that says
Code: [Select]
allow-guest=true

to
Code: [Select]
allow-guest=false

ctrl + x to exit
press y to save
press return to finish

then type at the prompt
Code: [Select]
reboot

My thinking is that if the guest account is disabled, it will show your user account but not sure if it will work.
You can change it back again by changing false to true if it causes a problem.

Maybe an idea to install webmin to provide a GUI http://www.webmin.com/
Samba configuration instructions are at  https://doxfer.webmin.com/Webmin/Samba_Windows_File_Sharing

If you are still struggling there is a snap version available:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt install snapd
sudo snap install signal-desktop

or if you go to system, software (not software manager) you can install it from there

You can add the signing key by:

Code: [Select]
curl -s https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt/keys.asc | sudo apt-key add -

then try again

Code: [Select]
sudo apt update && sudo apt install signal-desktop

Edit: sorry, mistype code should be as above.

Glad I could help.  Please can you edit the title of your first post to mark as "solved"

the second suggestion relates to a bug with the Intel graphics driver and just disables S Video, just mentioned in case you ever try to use S Video in the future and it doesn't work.
