I played around with a few things and now I've messed up my PM5 so I think I'll need a new install  :-[

Thanks for all your help though guys.  The info in this thread will definitely be of use as prevention next time around!

I found a way round it by doing this:

sudo dpkg -r bcmwl-kernel-source

Then

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer
and
sudo modprobe b43

And the wifi sprang into life.  It didn't survive the reboot but repeating the last command brought it back....

I thought that since it was dpkg that seemed to be causing the issue here, the contents of that folder might be the reason for the issue.  So, I decided to try deleting the 2 files inside  /var/lib/dpkg/updates and then updating.   The update seemed to be going fine initially, but then it got to bcmwl....

I can't even run that command.  The dpkg didn't even finish by the time I left work yesterday, so now it says:

brian@brian-iMac ~ $ sudo apt purge bcmwl-kernel source dkms ap-hotspot hostapd, dnsmasq, iw
[sudo] password for brian:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

I left it for a long time, several hours, and it never changed from what I wrote above....

35 minutes later, still no change on that terminal....

I had opened synaptic to check what was installed, and i got a message telling me to run the below command.  Which I did, but it's now been at this point for ten-fifteen minutes without the cursor coming up to show it's ready to let me enter more....

OK, the terminal showed this:
brian@brian-iMac ~ $ gedit /etc/network/interfaces

** (gedit:1834): WARNING **: Could not load Gedit repository: Typelib file for namespace 'GtkSource', version '3.0' not found

and the gedit showed this:

Not sure if this is in any way related, but when I power up PM5 without the ethernet cable, no wifi networks show as available, so even with my wifi router up and running (and a laptop running linux connected to it, as well as an ipad and iphone) I still can't do everything i wanted to.

Anybody any idea why wifi networks aren't showing up at all?

You know, you just reminded me I have an old buffalo wireless router at home. I wonder if that'll work in my office.... It'd make connecting everything much easier.... Hmmm.. Will test tomorrow!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Thank you.  I'll try that later when I'm at work and report back.
