New Users / "lock" desktop changes
« on: October 15, 2019, 06:43:03 am »
I have several old laptops (mostly 32bit) that I'm setting up for a local school here in South Africa. I have the default "administrator" account, and a 2nd "user" account for the students. How do I keep the little darlings from changing anything? They won't have the admin password, so they can't really do much except for cosmetic changes... but I really don't want them to be able to change anything.

I had thought of using the Guest Session, as any changes they make won't "stick". The trouble with that is that the wifi password will need to be re-entered every time, and the school administrators don't want to give the kids the wifi passwords. Also, I need to keep the Libreoffice settings (save as docx, for example),  and the firewall (ufw) rules. Also I need VLC as the default media player. Is it possible to do that with the Guest session? I have tried found a few suggestions, but they didn't really work. One involved linking "etc/skel" to the "/home/admin_user/.config" (or something like that - I can't seem find the link I followed anymore)  For example, I ended up with it asking me if I wanted the default panel or one single panel, and the wifi settings still didn't stick.
Also, I kept getting: "No session for pid 2554" at login.

Or maybe there's a better, more elegant solution?

On a side note: the Peppermint Kids Edutainment pack is brilliant! Thanks so much for that!

Installation / Re: Lenovo Ideapad 100S

Got it... the problem was the "boot order" in the BIOS. It was set to "ubuntu"... I have no idea why as this machine came with Windows 10. Selecting the correct default boot device (sata) did the trick.

I am really battling to install Peppermint 10 on a Lenovo Ideapad 100S!
I have turned off Secure Boot, but there's no way to get to "Legacy Mode". Google tells me that this laptop has a "32-bit UEFI-only BIOS".

Any ideas please?

Anyone? Please? It's wanting a keyring password. I've already entered a password.

Software & Applications / Nextcloud Password Prompt [SOLVED]

I'm running Peppermint 10 64bit. I've just installed Nextcloud via the ppa (not the flatpack). Whenever I reboot, I get asked for my password (the Keyring password, not the user login password - I've already entered that). How do I stop this? It's really annoying having to enter the password twice.

I've got a 4 terabyte external drive in the refs file system. I get "format not recognised". How can I read it?

try: sudo apt install tlp tlp-rdw
That should improve your laptop's battery life (assuming that the battery isn't old or damaged)

Sorry about the late reply, but I've just seen this post. I've got Peppermint 8 running on a RAID 0 array, and I used mdadm.

I didn't have that problem with Debian. But I'm not going to go into the problems that I did have with Debian...  :o

Ok... thanks. Here's the original before I started messing around with it:

That's very kind of you... thanks! But how do I insert an attachment? Or can I email it to you?

I've given up on this. I've tried various pictures of various sizes and in various formats and nothing works. So what I've done now is go into System Tools -> LightDM GTK+ Greeter Settings and turned off User Image.
At least I don't have to look at the default avatar while logging in.

I'm pretty sure that's what it was. I'm just happy to have figured it out. I spent the whole day on it!
