All has gone well with my downloads from YT today so I assume that there was a problem with the older version of the App.  Everything else in my upgraded Pep10 working well except xed still showing error message.  After trying Featherpad as an alternative I have come to like that more so I have made it default for Text Files (xed still installed just in case I forget!).  Referring to Clatterford Slim ClipGrab I came across that a while ago and installed it (Appimage) as a backup to my Firefox YT App which has worked well for me.  I have tried ClipGrab on a few occasions and it works well also .
Anyway I consider this thread can be closed - thanks to you both.

Thanks for your thoughts.  Just to clarify for PCNetSpec I am on a 64bit system and I had noticed the last post in the other thread seemed to have a problem on 64bit 9R.  After a fair amount of "playing around" with different options my suspicion is now directed at the Firefox YT Downloader app that I have previously used without problems. Firefox has been "upgraded" recently and I notice the YT App has been updated May 15.  If this App does not produce a picture and I go immediately to the ~/.cache/thumbnails directory and just delete the Fail folder when I return to the Downloads folder the picture is there now.  If I use a different (but slower) video download program and download a video the picture is always there.  To be continued (its past my bedtime!) .........
OK I'm still up but figured I wouldn't sleep unless I tried the obvious - removed YT App totally from Firefox (including ffmpeg file) and then reinstalled but only simple version (allows up to 720p which is all I use anyway - no ffmpeg required).  Tried it quickly on two YT videos and works fine.  I had noticed the original app seemed to be a bit glitchy so maybe that was the problem - Not Peppermint 10!  Will only return here if I need to otherwise I'll mark Solved tomorrow.  Thanks for all your help.

Hi Clatterford Slim - I do subscribe to your YT channel. Yes of course I am using Nemo and not Thunar and I am on 64bit install.  I have been caught out by the Preview setting in my earlier days with Peppermint so I use Always and 8GB so thumbnails should always show.  In fact I forgot this setting when I set up a Test user account and my first YT video download (several MB) did not display picture.  When I came back to the Forum I read your comment and went right back to change Preview in Test account and of course that corrected the problem immediately.  I think that my problem is related to the number of thumbnails in the ~/cache/thumbnails directory so I will try generating them quickly from the folders in my Home directory (in my original account of course).
Any other suggestions are welcome!

I have experienced this problem in an earlier version of Peppermint but can't remember which version!  Remember I did an upgrade rather than a new install of version 10 so that may have something to do with my problem now.  I did not have a separate Home folder and did not change anything during the upgrade so I doubt having a new user account will solve my problem but I will give it a try. Not sure what all those python bits I installed as per your upgrade instructions do but I assume they would not be involved?

There was a previous thread that covered this topic There are no real images of video files in the file manager. and now in Peppermint 10 (upgraded from 9R) I am again experiencing this problem.  When I delete all folders in ~/cache/thumbnails everything works as it should (on my last deletion there were about 420 thumbnails in the Large folder in this directory).
It was mentioned in the previous thread that there was a bug in the distro at that time and this deletion of folders was a workaround.  Is anybody else experiencing this problem?

Thanks again guys - Peppermint support is the best!  I kind of assumed -uk was not UK only or you would have commented appropriately - nice to have clarification.  I have had wifi problems with 4.18.0 and 5.0.0 kernels now available in update manager so will happily stay on 4.15.0-50 (although I had previously experienced wifi problems with -47 and -48 - I am keeping -46 just in case).  Big believer in the old adage "If it ain't broke don't fix it" so my panel is nicely setup and working just fine so I won't run the reset script unless I have problems.
Hopefully I can continue to "just use" Peppermint 10 for at least the next 6 months as it is my daily driver.  Still love to browse these forums for ideas as there are many good ideas for improving distro operation.  Many thanks to the Peppermint team for all their hard work and making this one of the best Linux forums.

Thanks for your prompt and complete reply. I updated initramfs for my two kernels without issue - I was wondering if -uk related to location (I am in Canada)?  I was exploring kernels and see that my current 4.15.0 will be supported until 2023 (unlike some later ones which kill my wifi as discussed in an earlier thread) - so I am not updating my kernel/HWE stack on this 10 year-old laptop.
If I reset my current panel can I retrieve that configuration or does that defeat the panel reset just performed ?!  Have not tried to use Panel Switch yet.
Enjoying using my personal Pep10 on my aging laptop - it performs well except for Firefox with many tabs and Youtube max is 720p.

Thanks for this upgrade path from Pep 9 to Pep10.  I followed Jim Acklaw's Youtube video earlier and only had a problem with Font DPI changer (which you solved above) and xed Text Editor - which I still cannot get working without getting the following Terminal error when launched xed is launched from Terminal:
denis@denis-K40IN ~ $ xed
(xed:9045): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 21:01:05.102: gdk_window_get_window_type: assertion 'GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed

I have set Theme to Peppermint as suggested but still get this error.  xed seemingly launches OK direct from Menu but I'm leery of using with this "Critical Error".  I have installed Featherpad and this works fine from Terminal and direct from Menu.  Any way to get xed working without error?

I have also installed all the suggested background packages as suggested in your above post which were not included when I upgraded originally.

For my information as a relative Noobie would you please explain exactly what "sudo update-initramfs -uk all" and "/usr/bin/reset-xfce4-panel" do because I don't like issuing commands in case they might wreck my system?!
Also what does "firefoxsend.desktop" do - I have copied it over but wondered where that came from now?

Wow I didn't mean to start a war!  I KNOW that running a USB stick with persistence will wear out much much quicker than any modern SSD, just like using a SD card  is not recommended at all (unless you use a Raspberry Pi!).  I have replaced ALL my old HDD with SSD - easy to move existing system from HDD to SSD.  Speeds up not just bootup time but all program loading times. My external drives are MUCH more responsive than the old USBs used to be when running any distro.  I have not had any of my SSDs fail yet - I wonder which make of SSD English Bob used and did he make sure Trim was enabled and overprovisioning provided (as necessary in earlier times)?  Comparing transfer rates for interest USB2 - 60 MB/s max (usually 30 or less) USB3 - 600 MB/s max (but usually 300 or less) but note SATA 3 internal is 6GB/s max. (6000MB/s). Hence install inside laptop or desktop where possible!

[EDIT correction]Firstly SATA 3 is 6Gbits/s thus 750MB/s max. but tests give 450-500MB/s read, 360-415MB/s write compressible data, 180-225MB/s write incompressible data.  However in checking for rates through USB to external SSD I found this article  https://www.macworld.com/article/2039427/how-fast-is-usb-3-0-really-.html which shows 40MB/s read and write USB2 and 165 read/200 write MB/s USB3 (presumably compressible data). So SATA 3  is 3X faster read 2X write than USB3 and 10X faster than USB2

All of the reputable SSD manufacturers these days usually build in sufficient overprovisioning but nothing wrong with allowing more spare unallocated space if you want.; also all Linux distros build in automatic Trim to ensure even wear without changing files as in the early days.  Installing most Linux distros on my 128GB SSDs usually only takes 10 -15 GB max.  I personally do not use these SSDs as working distros but unless you like to download lots of videos or music no way you will likely fill  up even 128GB - you can always buy a 256GB or larger SSD but not so good to go bigger on external SSD because of USB interface speed limitations (for my old desktop I just bought a 1TB ADATA SSD for CDN $130 taxes paid on Amazon using a $30 off coupon ).  Of course if you are building a new desktop M.2 drives are available and most motherboards are designed to take them and will no doubt they will become the standard in laptops.

For some time I have abandoned USB sticks except for storing Live Images of Linux Distros.
With the price of SSDs dropping so much I now use Orico Hard Drive Enclosures USB3/SATA3 (CDN$9-12) plus 120/128GB SSD (CDN$27-35) to install from the USB Live stick onto the SSD (with its own Grub file so it can be booted from any computer which allows booting from USB).  Although any cheap SSD would probably be fine I use ADATA SU800 as it significantly faster than other cheap drives according to http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/

I removed the NVidia flatpak - I don't know where that came from!  Then I found out that I had the regular NVidia version installed and it was working.  So I uninstalled that via Synaptic and rebooted into 4.18.0-20 kernel but still no wifi or wireless mouse :( Oh well I tried!
Rebooted kernel 4.15.0-46 and reinstalled NVidia drivers and rebooted again.  All working well and will not fiddle any more, but hoping that Pep10 will work for me with later kernel (which I assume will be included by default).
{EDIT}
Late Breaking News: In very recent update kernel 4.15.0-50 arrived , so even though -47 and -48 had failed I gave it one last chance and rebooted into -50 and VOILA it worked!  So am now operating in -50.  Unfortunately 4.18.0-20 still doesn't work but maybe 4.19.0 or higher might if available in Pep10.

Thanks for all your trouble and looking forward with anticipation to Pep10!

Don't know if this helps or not as wireless interface is unreachable with this kernel. However I note the extra warnings at the end of the dmesg output which to me implies the kernel is being "messed up" - is this because of the NVidia driver being a flatpak?  Also the ACPI warning about System10 range conflicts has gone.
If you can suggest anything I would appreciate your input in case I have the same problem in Peppermint 10 (I will be doing a fresh install rather than an upgrade - I quite enjoy the customization necessary to meet my personal requirements).
You have not mentioned whether my NVidia driver via flatpak is normal or an aberration?  I have not seen this before but it seems to be working in 4.15.0-46 even though there is the same message about tainting the kernel?

I have not tried deleting wireless profile  - by networkmanager do you mean Network Connections in the menu? I am not sure this would achieve desired result as Live Distros run on this profile (which is standard) - but they were not running NVidia drivers.  Unfortunately cannot install Nvidia drivers in Live distros and reboot as not persistent and they are not installed until reboot I understand?
Just to clarify ALL my responses to you have been when I am running kernel 4.15.0-46 as obviously I have no wifi  in higher kernels (or mouse - but I could use USB mouse!).  I could get you any useful outputs when running higher kernels and save them to send when I revert to -46 kernel.
Really don't want to abandon Peppermint as it is my favourite distro and has the best forums.  When is Peppermint 10 due out - should be soon I hope?  Will stay on present kernel until then if we cannot reach a solution.
Thanks for your help as always.

Also as a matter that I stumbled across recently my NVidia drivers are provided in a flatpak even though I installed them in the regular manner using the Additional Drivers application.  Is this the new normal?
AHA!  Just inspected your ath9k output and see:  nvidia: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel
Is this the problem?  Of course I did not install NVidia drivers in testing Live Distros so their kernels would work but it appears that the NVidia flatpak is tainting the kernel which presently works -46 but upgrading kernel fails.
If this is the problem, how do I totally remove NVidia flatpak so I can try reinstalling through Additional Drivers again?  If that works (without flatpak) I would try again to upgrade kernel (incidentally I have never been offered an upgrade since I went back to -46 - is that normal?)
