i solved it! well, i cheated somewhat but i'm very happy with the outcome:

i brought a micro wifi dongle lol :-)

the last one i had was over 3 inches long and got in the way big time, this one doesn't it sticks out about a quarter of a inch from the netbook

thank you again for all help.

David

no luck, sorry. the 'blacklist r8192e_pci' line worked when i rebooted for about half a second but then went back to normal ie: not working.

thank you very much for your help, but, i think i might try re-installing as someone else on the linux mint forums had the same problem and he said re-installing solved it [not sure how?]

What happens if you run:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -r rtl8192sethen
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -r r8192e_pcithen
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe rtl8192se

nothing came up in the terminal for me to paste here. although those commands have disconnected the inbuilt wifi. so in the bottom right of my screen i'm unable to select a wifi network; i just get the broken cable icon

a screen grab showing the dropbox icon greyed out and google drive icon not showing up next to the wifi signal icon [because they both can't connect] which says its connected with ok signal

a screen grab with the internal wifi disconnected and a wifi dongle inserted and connected show dropbox and google drive icons all working ok plus wifi signal :
