General Discussion / Mandatory personal computer information
« on: October 17, 2016, 05:53:52 pm »
my personal opinion on always requiring basic personal computer information before asking a question set a precedent on Linux. I use a lot of support forums and Peppermint is the first who enforce such mandatory information to answer ANY question.

This information can be use to gather statistical data of Peppermint users with what hardware they use. It's much like Google who is scrapping everything it can with their browser. Also that information can be use by hackers, after a break in into the site for accounts. They will have the signature of your computer (namely network interface type, kernel version and disk partitions information). I sound a bit paranoiac but in my opinion that information should only be voluntary for a person who just want to ask a question on a certain piece of software without being require to give irrelevant informations.

Shoot !

Software & Applications / Changing whisker menu font size ? [SOLVED]
« on: October 16, 2016, 02:50:56 pm »
Is there an easy way to change the whisker menu font size ? It seems to follow the type of font selected but not its font size.  The desktop and nemo have a different size ratio.
I only found the icons sizing.

Software & Applications / Resetting video driver nouveau [solved]
« on: October 16, 2016, 12:25:29 pm »
I spent a few hours installing Pep7 on an older PentiumD computer and everything went fine. I have a weird monitor (Acer x193w) with a resolution of 1440x900. I have dual boot with windows and windows can't even get me that resolution, only 1366x768 but Pep7 can with the nouveau driver. Anyway I install a bunch of programs without issue but after rebooting now the resolution is stuck at 1024x768, no more. I tried the Nvidia driver (304.131) suggested and this one get me 1366x768 like in windows. I don't why I lost the proper resolution on my monitor.

Is there a way to restore it ? I found this command  "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" but it doesn't do anything.

Artwork, Themes, and Icons / Purple fields
« on: August 23, 2016, 03:54:15 pm »
Nice purple theme based on a new entry in gnome-look. You will have to install all the vivacious icons to get all the theme icons. ( first version )
https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1151935/

The top control (title bar) are from this theme which has also purple controls

Ok this is a small one but so far I am unable to fault PM7. Great implementation of 16.04. Ok I have a Logitech K360 keyboard with a few audio control keys. Works beautifully. The only thing is the keyboard mute fonction. While the mute works, it cannot be restored with the KB again. A second press on the button should remove the muting. I have to remove it with the control applet.

It is not something with the keyboard but more with the implementation. I have the same KB on my main Mint Kde 17.3 rig and the button behave correctly (mute/unmute). So does in Windows.

Software & Applications / Settings Panel - translation ?
« on: July 31, 2016, 07:00:32 pm »
I noticed that the Control Center panel and the new Settings panel are not translated following a different language installation then English. I am using French and everything else is translated, even the Appearance Personnalisation panel. Are those ones been forgotten ?  That should be very easy to translate.

Artwork, Themes, and Icons / Peppermint 7 desktop - symbolic theme
« on: July 30, 2016, 09:12:39 pm »
Just a theme based on a symbolic icons set. Black-white-orange.

Theme (for 15.10 but works fine in 16.04) Not too flat and lot of colours.

I still use Peppermint 6 on one of my comp and I have no intention of changing it. It has been such an unbreakable strong horse that I will keep it for a longtime. So I start installing Linux Mint 18 cinnamon on another older computer and while it works mostly fine, there are still deal breaker bugs in their distro that I ditch it and install Pep 7.  First of all, I am really not a fan of the goofy styling but it can be easely fix. So I have it now the way I like (the "flat" look is the equivalent of the Zika virus for Linux. Eventually it will be cured).  Any way to my surprise none of the bugs of Mint 18 are present in 7. It seems that the Peppermint team have taken the best parts of other distros and make it work great all together. So kudos to the developers, that made another outstanding and solid distro (even though I think they have bad taste in design, but it's of course, that's subjective ...)  :D

This is a known problem with the Synapse utility in 16.04, it crash if we try to use it. After research on the web, the command has to be replaced by this : (temporary fix, but working)
bash -c 'GTK_IM_MODULE="" synapse'

How can I replace the command in the menu and to get it to launch with that command at login ?

Installation / Pepppermint 7 hang on disk detection (installation)
« on: July 25, 2016, 08:15:09 pm »
I am trying to install Pep 7 on an older machine (Abit Kn8 Ultra - Amd Athlon 64). At the phase where it scan for disks, it just  turn in circle and never come back. I have install Mint 18 on that partition before without any issue.
Any idea ?

I was getting notifications from the updater for a while about some updates but the installation kept failing because it could not find the files. I had two peppermint machines with the same problem. I suspect that it had something to do with the repo selection so I change the default "Canadian" source to the main Ubuntu one and after a refresh, all the updates (and some more) went through without issues. Is there away to choose a different repo manually like in Mint ?

Software & Applications / Gtk update needed
« on: November 14, 2015, 11:21:38 am »
There a bunch of nice themes developed on "gnone-look.org" but they don't display correctly in PM (nor Mint). It is because the gtk kit is too old (3.10 - 2013?) and the new designs use 3.16-18. Is there a way to upgrade that kit ?
I think Ubuntu is up to date, not sure.

Thanks
( I am really no an expert on this though)

Installation / Cannot install ATI proprietary driver [SOLVED]
« on: November 11, 2015, 08:03:48 pm »
I have been using PM6 for a while without issue. I am planning to play some games on it and decide to use the proprietary driver from the hardware manager. If I select anything else then the recommended X driver, as soon as I  press apply, the selection simply return to my installed driver or sometime seems to download something but return to the original. So no go.

I went on to the AMD site to get the latest one, it's a .deb file, easy enough. Should be simple. The installation went fine but on reboot all I got was a black screen with a flashing cursor on the upper left side. No go either.
Thankfully I made an image backup before so I went back oon my feet.

Am I doing anything wrong ? Why is it so difficult to install a video driver in Linux still in 2015.

Software & Applications / Update Nemo to the latest version [SOLVED}
« on: November 01, 2015, 09:48:41 am »
There is a new version of Nemo, the file manager, 2.8, which is available now. Since the PM version is rather old (2.45). I was wondering of it is possible to update it ?

The new version is available through a ppa on Noobslab but I think it is only for new installations on Ubuntu.
