Software & Applications / Serial to USB (SOLVED)
« on: August 16, 2019, 05:10:17 am »
Hi guys

I'm still working on my friends laptop, and I'm trying to get a weight monitor device to connect to Peppermint, this device connects to a weighbridge via a serial connection and to a PC/laptop also via a serial connection he's been using a serial to usb cable that comes with a Windows & Mac driver (no linux driver surprise surprise), and then connecting via Putty, I can't see any reason why this shouldn't work in Linux if I can find a driver to convert the serial signal to usb such as the Windows & Mac driver that comes with the cable.

So my question is does anyone know of a Linux driver or any other way I can solve the problem ?

Hi guys
I,m trying to run OBS to experiment with livestreaming, I've installed it from the package manager but when I open it I instantly get the following error

It doesn't look good I've Additional Drivers but there's none offered

Here's my spec

Software & Applications / No USB2 support Virtualbox 6
« on: June 17, 2019, 04:47:10 pm »
Hi guys
I've got a Windows 7 guest running in Virtualbox 6 on a friends laptop and I can't get it recognise any USB drives,

I have Guest Additions and the extension pack installed I have the user added to vboxuser group & USB 2 enabled in VB settings and no USB drive is being recognised by the guest.

Virtualbox 6 has support for USB 1, 2 & 3 and I've tried them all, that said USB 3 will not install because it can't find the driver but USB 2 would be fine, I've searched endlessly for a solution for this and I've eliminated everything I can find but it just won't work

Has anyone any idea what the problem might be ?

Many thanks

Networking / Blocked webpage (SOLVED)
« on: June 13, 2019, 06:40:56 am »
Hi guys

An employee of mine brought his laptop running PM9 into work yesterday and said he cannot access his internet banking, so we fired it up went to the page and it opened up instantly, we tried it with Firefox & Chromium and worked each time we tried on our android phones and it also worked, The site in question is TSB internet banking login page and when he tries to access it at home he's told "Access Denied" this is before he attempts to input his username/password so this is not a secure page anyone can access it.

He had contacted TSB who said there was no problem at their end which seems right to me, so I suggested to him the problem was with Virgin Media (his ISP) or maybe his router, so he contacted VM and they said they're not blocking it and there's no problem at their end but it seems to me it has to be their problem as it's connecting through TalkTalk , Now TV &  O2 mobile but it would be useful to know if anyone else using VM has the same problem with this page so if there's anyone using VM could they be kind enough to go to that page and let me know if they could access it
The page address is
https://internetbanking.tsb.co.uk/personal/logon/login/#/login

Many thanks

Software & Applications / Devnet Shevnet (SOLVED)
« on: June 13, 2019, 01:20:50 am »
Hi guys

As I already mentioned on here I've installed PM10 on a friends laptop, I've already done this for him on his PC and he loves it, he wants away from Windows and I really want this to work for him but I'm having endless issues, he has some specialist software which I set up a Windows VM for and I had to help with that on another thread, this time my problem is with email, he has a devnet-uk domain and I cannot get it to send emails with Thunderbird, the frustrating thing here is he has it working in Thunderbird on a mac and it sends and receives ok, I've copied his settings exactly and tried every other possible combination on the smtp server settings and I keep getting the same error each time

Quote
Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent because connecting to the Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.devnet-uk.net
failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your
Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again

So as I'm unfamiliar with domain name email as well as devnet-uk is there anything I could be overlooking I can't think of any logical reason why it would work on his mac and not on the laptop, I've been at this for days now and I've run out of ideas

The fact it works on his mac suggests to me I have some setting wrong but god knows I've tried everything I can think of but there's obviously something I haven't thought of so would it be possible to locate the .thunderbird folder in his mac and copy it to the home folder on the PM10 laptop I'm working on or is that a stupid idea

Software & Applications / Virtualbox woes (SOLVED)
« on: June 10, 2019, 03:04:16 pm »
Hi guy

Im currently installing PM10 on a friends laptop and sadly I have to install Virtualbox to run a Windows VM due to some specialist (windows only) software however I can't get Virtualbox to cooperate when I try to run it I get the following message

Quote
grant@Grants-Thinkpad ~ $ virtualbox
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (4.18.0-21-generic) or it failed to
load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by

           sudo /sbin/vboxconfig

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.

When I run the command I get thge following error

Quote
grant@Grants-Thinkpad ~ $ sudo /sbin/vboxconfig
[sudo] password for grant:
vboxdrv.sh: Stopping VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Starting VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Building VirtualBox kernel modules.
vboxdrv.sh: failed: modprobe vboxdrv failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find out why.

There were problems setting up VirtualBox.  To re-start the set-up process, run
  /sbin/vboxconfig
as root.  If your system is using EFI Secure Boot you may need to sign the
kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load
them. Please see your Linux system's documentation for more information.

This laptop does have EFI secure boot which I think has something to do with this issue

Software & Applications / Can I run Excel in Wine
« on: June 03, 2019, 01:10:38 am »
Hi guys

I have a friends PC I've installed PM10 on dual boot alongside Windows 10, The thing is he's self employed and VAT registered and new legislation coming out soon means he has to use special accounting software for paying his VAT, http://www.vtsoftware.co.uk/tranplus/ He doesn't want to use Windows at all and asked me if it's possible to run this software in Peppermint, the problem is that this software is only available in Windows so I tried installing it in WINE (Play on Linux) and it looked like it might install but part way through the install process it asks to browse to the Excel folder (presumably this software requires Excel), I have a copy of Office 2010 but it wont install it crashes part way through the installation.

Does anyone know of any version of Excel that will run in WINE or any way around this problem

Many thanks

Software & Applications / tarring with the same brush (SOLVED)
« on: April 25, 2019, 01:35:42 am »
HI guys

I'm trying to write a simple script to backup my Shotwell database which resides at  ~/.local/share/shotwell
so I want to create an tarball of the shotwell directory that I can extract to ~/.local/share

so if I run the following command

Code: [Select]
sudo tar -cf ~/shotwell-backup.tar ~/.local/share/shotwell

I get this message

Code: [Select]
graeme@Linux1 ~ $ sudo tar -cf ~/shotwell-backup.tar ~/.local/share/shotwell
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
graeme@Linux1 ~ $

However it creates the tarball at ~/ but when I extract it I get a folder called "home" with subfolders  /graeme/.local/share/shotwell, but I only want the shotwell directory

what am I doing wrong ?

I don't have to do it this way i could simply copy the folder with

Code: [Select]
sudo cp -r ~/.local/share/shotwell ~/shotwell.bakup

but I'm curious to know what I'm doing wrong

Hardware / AMD Vega series driver
« on: March 18, 2019, 12:23:18 pm »
Hi guys
I've just installed PM9 on a friends PC and I'm having issues with graphics, to begin with I had to set the nomodeset boot parameter permanent to get it to boot, but even when booted the graphics aren't quite right, ie I cant get full screen video in SM player.
This is what I get

and VLC instantly crashess when I try to run a .mkv, Media player will run a video in full screen but it.s very stuttery, I'm sure this is a graphics driver issue but there's no additional drivers being offered, this is a brand new PC and there may not be a Linux driver for this GPU, I'm hoping I'm wrong

Installation / blank screen after grub menu (SOLVED)
« on: March 16, 2019, 06:15:55 am »
Hi guys

A friend asked me to install Peppermint on his new pc currently running Windows 10, he need Windows & Excel for specific business software so I've installed it alongside Windows 10 and it's so far working fine except I need to run the nomodeset boot parameter every time at boot if not the screen just blanks out after the grub menu, I suppose I could edit the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file, but I'm not sure that would be the right thing to do even if it worked, it's an AMD graphics card see system info below

Hi guys

This is not really a big issue but I'm just curious if anyone else who uses Megasync is having the same problem

When I right click on the Megasync icon on the panel I'm given 3 choices Show Status, Settings & Exit, Settings and Exit works fine but clicking on Show Status does absolutely nothing, however if I place the icon on the Desktop a left click will launch the show status box

Software & Applications / What's happened to Phatch (SOLVED)
« on: January 03, 2019, 01:17:03 am »
Hi guys

I have a folder full or images all random sizes I want to resize, I used to use Phatch for this although it hasn't worked since 16.04 but nonetheless I thought I'd try it again, but it's no longer in the repos, their website http://photobatch.wikidot.com/ says "click the download link on the homepage" but there is no download link on the homepage or anywhere I can see unless I'm missing the obvious.

I looked for alternatives and the only thing I can find is a GIMP plugin called DBP (Davids Batch Processor) DBP file:///home/graeme/Downloads/dbp-1.1.9/dbp.html but installing that involves compiling from source, which I've never done successfully in my life that said, I downloaded the .tgz file and extracted it but the instructions if you can call it that is as clear as mud.

So my question is does anyone know where I can get Phatch in either .deb, snap, flatpack or appimage, or know of any other alternative application that could batch process multiple image files

Many thanks
