Anyone using/ used or have experience in an API called PI-Hole for linux?
a Network-wide ad blocker via your own Linux hardware?

General Discussion / WiFi WPA2 encryption/ security broken..?!
« on: October 16, 2017, 02:55:17 am »
Came across an article dated October 15th 2017 for all who use wifi, considering that WPA2 encryption has been with us since circa 2004.  :o (has it been THAT long)

https://www.alexhudson.com/2017/10/15/wpa2-broken-krack-now/

SWMBO and I only use wifi if absolutely necessary as we have been on a wired network for years at home.

This to me seems to be a major security headache as mobile phones, PC;s, Smart TV's etc..should use WPA2 encryption (being the current secure standard)
what now?
Firmware updates for newer devices perhaps leaving older devices insecure?
My initial reaction to this was planned obsolescence to create revenue but, now I'm not so sure.. :-\

Software & Applications / Internal USB stick formatter [Solved]
« on: September 27, 2017, 07:21:58 am »
Hi PCNETSpec,
Just had an issue whereby access to an SD card (on a USB3 SD Kingston Mobilelite G3) was denied for writing. (works/worked no prob in Windoze R/W)
Checked properties of SD card on PM8 which displayed that it was not R/W so I attempted to rectify it within the properties section and set to R/W to no avail..
So I copied everything from the SD card to system SSD and used the 'USB stick formatter' to format the SD card using the FAT32 filesystem.
On completetion of formatting, the USB SDCard reader disappeared from nemo.
So I then unplugged the device and reinserted after 10 seconds to find the system doesn't see the device!  :o

Using a third part app via windows, I found that the filesystem of the SDCard was 'unformatted' but still active so I formatted it using minitools disk wizard.

Plugged it in to the PM8 system and worked straight away.  ;D

Is it just me or does the 'USB stick formatter' not work as intended?
Anyone else tried it recently?

Thanks in advance  :)

Looking for some help to get back on the normal kernel stream for PM7 respin x64.
I recently tried a Low Latency kernel for attached music devices/synthesizers midi etc..and I'm having difficulty getting back to the normal kernel.
I've tried via the mint-updater kernel section and mismatch errors occur at 98%  :(
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A quick question for PCNetSpec,  ;)

Currently on Firefox 54.0 and there has been an update released by Mozilla to 54.0.1 but nothing has come thru mint-updater within PM7.
see below:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/54.0.1/releasenotes/

Why hasn't there been an update via the mint-updater within PM7 although it has been released for over a week on Windowz?

Thanks in advance

Still on Pre-Respin PM7 and is standing the test of time, kodi abuse and being used more than the inferior  BSOD Operating Systems I have..anyway that's another matter.

Over time my lightDM GTK+ greeter is intermittently showing the screen or just not bothering sometimes.  >:(
Another thing it does is, briefly show the greeter screen and then quickly go to the desktop screen before I have a chance to log in within seconds of start-up.
is this connected? If so, how can it be fixed? Is there a way to reset this, so it works all the time again?

Thanks in advance.

User Submitted Tutorials / Nemo Delete / Recycle Rubbish Warning!
« on: October 28, 2016, 05:15:45 am »
Aaarghh!!  :o
I've done one of the most dangerous things in any distro that has the function.
Accidently deleted files using the delete (with the red cross which bypasses the recycle bin)
Fortunately I have a backup.

For those who don't have a backup, here is a walkthrough to hide that function within nemo (file manager):

1. Open Nemo (File Manager)
2. In the menu at the top: Click Edit> Preferences
3. The 'File Manager Preferences' window will pop up.
4. Within this windows click on the 'Behaviour' tab at the top.
5. At the foot of the window there is a sub menu titled 'Rubbish Bin', untick the following within this section:

Include a Delete command that bypasses the Rubbish Bin

and

Bypass the Rubbish Bin when the Delete key is pressed

then close the 'File Management Preferences' window.

You will now find that if you right click a file within nemo, only the 'Move to Rubbish Bin' is visable.
This will save you the frustration of losing files accidently deleted.  ;)

Networking / Blueman removal possible? YES (Solved)
« on: October 19, 2016, 04:49:31 am »
How can I remove Blueman and is there anything I should be alerted to before removing?
Are there dependancies related to networking which would affect ethernet or wifi or anything else for that matter?
How to check?  ???

This laptop doesn't have bluetooth but is installed by default. (my pet hate in a PC is excess baggage ;))
Note: The blueman applet doesn't run at startup in 'Default applications for LXSessions' and everything works as intended.

TIA

Hardware / INFO: Canoscan 650U/1220U works in 64bit Peppermint 7
« on: October 14, 2016, 05:00:46 am »
Canon never released 64bit drivers for this device only 32bit due to being a legacy scanner
and after various claims from 3rd party software, dead ends and frustration at the time..
I resigned to using 32bit OSes that would work with it. (circa 2010-11)  :(

Yesterday, I took the plunge and upgraded from 32bit to 64bit Peppermint 7.
This morning I plugged in the scanner to try and...

 :D WOW!  Success!  :D

After all this time the scanner worked in Peppermint 7 64bit as well as 32bit.  ;D
I am so glad I took the plunge to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit Peppermint 7 yesterday.

Software & Applications / LightDM GTK+ Greeter Query (solved)
« on: October 10, 2016, 09:58:43 am »
[symptom]

My LightDM GTK+ Greeter is set to display image 1 and Desktop is set to display image 2 as a background.
Prior to logging in at startup, image 1 displays for a brief two or three seconds, then defaults to image 2.

Is this supposed to happen prior to log in?

Is there a method/command to delay the display of image 2 until after login is successful?

IIRC the image changed after a log in on PM5.  :-\

TIA

Networking / WiFi LED indicator blinking whilst online (SOLVED)

One annoyance I've put up with is a blinking led on wifi.
Any way to sort this, I've asked before but that was a usb wifi - now given away.
Wifi works ok now after I found one of the internal antenae connectors had come loose from the wifi card.. ::)
