New Users / how to delete a message
« on: November 25, 2019, 10:57:19 am »
hI, and thanks in advance for the help.
is it possible to delete a message off the message board?
for example, posted a question a few minutes ago, then figured out the answer myself.  so i came back on here to delete the message and save someone else the time of replying, but i can only figure out how to modify the message, not delete it.

Software & Applications / access iphoto database from external drive
« on: October 02, 2019, 03:20:03 pm »
Hi all, and thanks in advance for the help.  As I continue to distance myself from the universe of Apple, the next step for me is accessing my years of photos stored in iphoto on an external HD.

Here is my problem-- I can access the external drive, open the iphotos folder, open the "masters" folder, and find the actual .jpg photos. BUT, I can't open them.  On each .jpg icon, there is a red X. that seems like a bad sign.  As I understand it, this is a permissions problem.  how do i fix this? they are all my photos, but the imac that we have used for years has gotten too old and bogged down to even be able to open the iphoto library anymore.

how do i access these photos in peppermint?

New Users / Arduino serial port problem
« on: September 13, 2019, 07:18:25 pm »
My son's Arduino won't connect on peppermint.  It is my understanding that it is a common Linux problem that can be fixed, but I can't understand how. Upon opening the Arduino IDE reads "java.lang.NullPointerException thrown while loading"

what do i do? please use small words :)
thanks in advance.

New Users / How to dim desktop monitor
« on: August 12, 2019, 09:12:36 am »
Ok I feel ridiculous for asking this, but how do I dim my monitor on a desktop computer with peppermint OS? I’ve never had any trouble with this on my laptop with  peppermint, but I just added peppermint to an old dell desktop that I picked up somewhere and I can’t figure out how to do it. The keyboard does not seem to offer any obvious help. Everything else seems to work fine. The monitor is a gateway with no obvious buttons either.  ::)

Software & Applications / default keylink
« on: May 11, 2019, 02:15:59 pm »
thank you in advance for the help.
I created a new user account on a laptop that runs peppermint 7.  whenever i log in to this account (its a "desktop user" account, not admin), a box pops up and wants the account password to access a "default keylink" for wifi connectivity.  after i give the password, it then disconnects the computer from wifi and i have to reconnect.
this has never happened on the other account on the same laptop.
how do i make that go away?

Software & Applications / parental control apps

Hi, my son loves coding and electronics so I'm getting him started young on peppermint, but i would like to be able to monitor things like how much time he is spending on the computer and when, what apps he's using, etc.  is there an app for that or something already built in to peppermint?
i already have an app installed for web monitoring.  u use an app called accountability2you for that.

thank you.

Advanced Topics / How To Access "Time Machine" files on peppermint
« on: March 03, 2019, 11:45:11 am »
Thank you in advance for the help.

I need to access an old apple time machine backup to access a file that has recently become very important.  When i plug in the external hardrive, it mounts with no problem, but it gets weird after that.
I can open backups.backupdb > my imac > [dated folder] > macintosh HD > users > [my user]
BUT when I try to open the 'documents' folder (or any other folder from here), the folder is displayed with a red X on it and I get the message, "You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of '[Documents, or whatever folder]'".

how to I access my data?

power manager
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: Permission denied

When i open or wakeup my laptop, i get this message.  how do i fix that?
thank you.

Installation / Can’t login after update
« on: February 08, 2019, 01:05:17 pm »
Hello and thanks In advance for the help.  I just did sudo apt-get upgrade, and then update in terminal. After that, two bad things happened. First, I was unable to restart or shutdown my computer. When I clicked the windows key, then clicked the button to open the shutdown/restart options, I received an error message. So I manually shut down my laptop.
2.  Now when I turn on my laptop, peppermint starts, then asks for my password to log in to my account. But when I enter my pw, it says “failed to start session.”  Likewise, when I try to log in to a guest session, it says “failed to start session”

I ran BIOS diagnostics on my computer and found no problems. Also I have used peppermint OS on this laptop for some time with no problems.

New Users / how to sync photos from iphone SE
« on: March 11, 2018, 12:02:17 pm »
Hi, i have some photos on my iphone that i want to sync to an app in Peppermint, preferably Shotwell.  When I plug in the phone, the following happens

1.  iphone is instantly recognizable in "Files" File Manager under Devices.
2.  on the iphone, a message pops up requesting permission to access photos and videos.  I click "allow".
2.  when i click on iphone in the file manager, instead of seeing files or folders there is a message that says "The Media Contains Digital Photos" followed by a button that says "Open Shotwell Photo Manager".
3.  I click on "Open Shotwell Photo Manager"
4.  Shotwell opens and gives an error message-- "Unable to fetch previews from the camera; Could not claim the USB device (-53)
5.  I click OK, then select "iphone" from the "camera" options in the left column of Shotwell
6.  in the picture window, shotwell says "Starting import, please wait..."
7.  nothing ever happens.

additional information-- i have windows 10 on this same laptop.  when i boot to windows 10 and connect the phone, it is instantly recognized and has no problems viewing the thumbnails of photos/videos on the iphone and asking me if i want to import.
but i hate windows.

ios 11.2.6 on my iphone.  up to date.
peppermint OS 64 bit, up to date as of 5 minutes ago.
dell lattitude e6430s

any ideas for how i can somehow use PeppermintOS to access and download my iphone photos?

New Users / Can't print anything beyond the "test page"
« on: December 21, 2017, 01:25:41 pm »
Thanks in advance for the help!

I am running peppermint 8 on a dell lattitude E6430s.  I have added an HP Colorjet printer, and can sucessfully print the test page from  Settings Panel > Hardware > Printers > [my printer] >  Printer Properties.  BUT, i can't seem to print anything else.  Specifically, when I try to print from gEdit, LibreOffice, or Chromium, the printer prints a blank page.
