hi guys...just be aware of this web app, ext or whatever FF is calling it comes with a fake FF manual update tab that dumps a nice little cryptominer into your browser...DAMIEN

Firefox add-on has been spotted that injects an in-browser miner. Detected by Bleeepingcomputer’s Lawrence Abrams, this extension is called Image Previewer. To infect the systems, the addon spreads via malicious websites that pretend to deliver a manual Firefox update.

General Discussion / OK...finally did it
« on: January 21, 2018, 11:52:33 am »
hi you all know i have done 22+ installs of peppermintOS to date on various computers for others as well as my eeepc 1015 testing computer and my backup computer...but i took the ultimate plunge into the briney deep yesterday with my main driver...yep...dug out my deep diving equipment and installed peppermint 8.5 respin on my daily driver...what made me do it you ask?...well, i'll tell ya...with LM mint 18.3 cinnamon, i was having a slight problem...months ago i uninstalled opera-browser mainly because i just cannot trust a software browser that is owned by a chinese corporation that always answers to its governing overlords...but after purging it and getting rid of any leftovers in its remaining folders in cron etc...its "opera automatic signing key 2017 <> A5C7FF72" kept mysteriously re-appearing in the update manager additional repository amount of removing, uninstalling, purging, searching, terminal inspired obliterations would stop this key from re-appearing  on my system...even the forum could not find the solution to this, though they did indeed try...its keys even using ubuntu forum helps could not find where this key was deeply hidden on mint the ultimate solution was to just DBAN the entire problem to death and clean install peppermint OS 8.5 should be interesting to find out if any here on peppermint have also, like me have uninstalled opera and find there is still this key hidden deep within the system that will not go bye bye...for me anyways, this serves as a "cautionary tale" of software even if it is considered highly regarded and trusted...personally i do not trust any software that keeps trying to leave anything behind called an "automatic signing key" after you have expressly uninstalled/purged it and wont go away even after using terminal to purge it with the terminal and the terminal response saying "OK" and then immediately re-install itself...DAMIEN

General Discussion / For your Happy Christmas Day and Amusement
« on: December 25, 2017, 12:34:59 pm »
hi folks...happy Christmas...i thank this forum profusely for not suffering fools lightly on this forum...i do not see the idiocy on this forum that i so often see on the other forum that i am a member of that seems lately to "entertain" the trolls and the "tin hat brigade"...many thanks to all for not suffering these fools lightly...for your christmas entertainment as i could take no more today of the nonsense and have duly posted to the other forum my dissertation of what has been a very recent influx of either trolls, tin hat conspirarcy theorists, or just plain rantists of disaffected windows users who now are ranting against linux because of the PEBCAK factor or the olde fashioned ID 10 T system failure, i now present to you, my copy and paste new topic to that forum of my take on what is happening there this past month...i did of course change the forums distro version to read as just "linux"...enjoy...DAMIEN

hi folks and a happy christmas to all...i cant help but wonder if im all alone in noticing what i perceive to be a recent influx of posts that are obsessing of dr web says this, or clam a/v claims this when i run it, or why doesnt commodo a/v download for me. i also notice that there are a few who are not so much as asking honest hearted questions or for help but constantly whine about how linux "breaks" everything for them and windows is so much better etc. without really asking for the help or willing to accept the answers to their problems...i noticed that one such user who joined the forum nov 25th 2017 until today had already posted 166 posts with various rants on how bad linux is compared to what he was used to in windows (that translates to an average of 5.533333333 post per day, and if i believe him when he says his first post to forums is much more recent than his join date, that just makes it worse...then there are those who are so "distressed" by what they perceive as glaring security failures with linux operating systems...i realize that we as a community do not wish to argue or want in any way to cause offense towards others here on the forums but when is enough, really just enough? there any concensus of opinion here to have something in the very beginning of the opening page of the forums in BIG BOLD FACE RED LETTERS that could say something like...ATTN> PREVIOUS WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS USERS...READ FIRST BEFORE MAKING YOUR FIRST POSTS TO THIS FORUM...yes i do realise this probably sounds rather extreme, but the question does come to mind if we as a community are purposely being trolled or worse still, actually kowtowing to the conspiracy theorists with tin foil hats (please view the humourous following link)
well, im just looking to find out if its just me or if others do notice this...a happy christmas to all as i now go to the kitchen and find my roll of reynolds wrap so that i too can make my very own tin foil hat so that i can also join the world of the truly paranoid of this

Software & Applications / Normal Boot Time?
« on: December 03, 2017, 03:53:39 pm »
hi folks...what is considered a good boot time with peppermint? present cold boot up takes around 45 to 50 seconds which i have considered very reasonable but i keep reading about folks with much faster boot times...there is nothing on my hard drive except the OS...everything and i do mean everything else is stored and used via my USBs...the only thing i use on peppermint not supplied by software manager is my slimjet browser with startpage search engine and timeshift backup utility where i keep just one "on demand" backup that i change monthly...the samba sharing startups etc are disabled through bootup i in the normal range?...(no, im not talking about my deranged brain lol) ps...i also have identical boot up times across the board with LM 18.x sytems ive installed to date as well...doesnt matter if the system has 1 gig of ram, single, dual or quad core processors, or 5400 or 7200 rpm HDs...they all boot either peppermint or mint in same time...just wondering...DAMIEN

General Discussion / <Abandoned> brightness on dell inspiron n5110 laptop
« on: November 21, 2017, 06:00:50 pm »
ok hi guys once again...i understand server went down so im reposting there a way for peppermint to retain my brightness setting for this laptop...i presently have been setting it with slider control found on right click on battery meter...havent been able to find a way to permently set this...every time i start the computer i always need to reset it to my quite light sensitive so hate the shock of a bright screen even though i use a dark background already...yea i know, i live in the desert with 360 days of sunlight per year and im light should see the blackout drapes on my neighbors think im a vampire...thanks for any info on how to do this...DAMIEN

new edit...also notice that while in session that when battery has fully charged, it brings screen back to 100% brightness again and have to re-captiulate again...DAMIEN

General Discussion / BIOS UPDATE?
« on: November 11, 2017, 03:37:24 am »
hi is just another question to answer my never ending quest of knowledge lol...well here goes...ive been using computers of one type or another beginning in my amateur radio days when we were really experimenting around with keyboards and monitors for slow scan tv, rtty etc. etc....that goes back to 1973...yea im that old lol...when i look at other forums for linux, i always come across someone telling someone else to flash or update their bios/efi on their all the years ive been using computers of any sort ive never ever done this as i know that one slip up, you will turn your tower into a glorified door there any worthwhile reason for anyone to do so when computer and os are working just fine...i believe in not futzing around with things as people tend to get into trouble when they play around with things they have zero understanding of as i have no understanding of just how to do this and why would i want to take such a risk...i built this particular computer myself and i used an asus F1A75-V EVO motherboard,1901x64...bios version Aug. 31st, 2012...with an AMD quad core processor that is set @ 2900 mhz but can be overclocked to 3600mhz...16 gigs Corsair Vengence Ram DDR3 1600 mhz...and an Hitachi 500 gig HD (using a whole whopping 6 gigs) and a 600 watt power supply and yea, i know its overkill lol...though i see no need to overclock since it is plenty fast aleady...any replies to increase my knowledge here will be greatly appreciated...DAMIEN

General Discussion / New Topic vpn
« on: November 04, 2017, 07:10:13 pm »
hi again guys...Ok first using the built-in vpn in opera bowser using startpage search engine...the following ports are reported red/open by shields up...22/sh remote login protocal...78/vettcp...80/http protocal...443 https ssl protocal...and refuses to scan further after it reaches port 895...896 to 1056 just keeps spinning with no resolution...all previously mentioned ports left in red/open position...

now the slimjet browser using startpage search engine with ext. 113/ident authentication service is blue/closed, not stealthed...and port 443 https ssl protocal is in red/open position it does finish the scan...

with either browser with vpn off all ports are stealthed...what would be the reason that vpns open these ports for 2 way information for those of us (that would mean me) who do not have a clue why a privacy device would do this leaving vulnerabilities open...thanx again...DAMIEN

General Discussion / <SOLVED> which dns server
« on: November 01, 2017, 09:22:37 am »
hi guys...would like to know what is presently the most secure/private etc dns server to use?...presently using there any better ones?...are there any that enforce a "no reverse dns" such as when i check it on shieldsup etc?...looking forward to all of your replies...i should mention that is preventing me from accessing the update mirrors so had to revert to which works brilliantly but have zero idea who runs it...DAMIEN
