Software & Applications / Best Radio Player and Why?
« on: January 04, 2019, 06:23:20 pm »
Hello All Peppermint Users,

I love listening to radio, whether internet stations or local ones. As the subject states, I am looking to source the best player for Peppermint.

I used to use Guayadeque. An excellent player, that will sort your home music collections as well. Had some gstreamer issues at one time, while most are now resolved.

My current option is Lollypop, very easy to use, great for radio and private music. Although a recent update (unsure at this point if it was a Peppermint update recently rendered my program useless, causing a re-install of Peppermint.

Software & Applications / Chess in Linux (Solved)
« on: December 30, 2018, 08:16:29 pm »
Chess on Linux is very limited. But there is an excellent chess database called SCID. Apart from Manjaro, and OpenSUSE I am yet to see any debian based distros supply this excellent bit of a Open Source Software via the repositories, at least not an up-to-date version.

You can find the program here.

I normally have to install the tcl dependencies and then manually install from the zip file, but it would be awesome to have it in the repo.

*** After posting, I found the SCID program using the Software Manager, and it has been updated ***

General Discussion / File Manager Woes
« on: December 16, 2018, 07:15:13 pm »
I have started having some issues with the file manager. I am unsure at this point if I have done something (i.e. installed something that may be causing a conflict.... or some malware...lol).

When transferring files from one drive to another, the file manager appears to crash... or simply close mid job.

A similar thing happen when using Lollypop, midway through listening to Talksport it simply closed. (So it may not be file manager related).

I don't really want to do a full reinstall, but if needs must!! Anyone else having issues.... ?

Hardware / Printers
« on: September 28, 2018, 03:01:02 pm »
I have an Epson XP-425 printer that's connected to my home network. The only way I can print anything is via libreoffice. None of the other apps or programs can print. The jobs seem to be rejected by the printer. This is the first time I have experienced this. I have the correct driver(s) installed..... any ideas before i reinstall peppermint afresh.

General Discussion / Playonlinux vs Crossover
« on: June 09, 2017, 06:37:30 pm »
Hello All,

I am looking for some advice with regards gaming. I play Stronghold Crusader a lot, This works seemlessly using Playonlinux. I used to play Galactic Civilizations II when I used windows, and would like to use it without diual booting. I notice it works with Crossover.

Anyone know the pros and cons of both?

General Discussion / Distro Image
« on: May 30, 2017, 09:48:59 pm »
How easy is it to make a complete ISO of a peppermint install, including software that has been added.  Then it would be easy to install my own flavour of Peppermint *, on my other PC's without the need for manually checking each one.

A 'how to' guide including some software suggestions would be great. I noticed someone on Youtube using SystemBack, but is a backup utility correct for this process?

Software & Applications / Applications Menu
« on: March 09, 2017, 07:00:57 am »
I have decided to customize the look of my desktop. Casting my mind back to Peppermint 6, I preferred the simple LXDE menu style to the current whisker menu.

I removed the whisker menu and added an applications menu. While I still have some customizations to do.... there is a label that says "no applications found' any ideas what this is, and how do i remove it?

Software & Applications / xfce4-screenshooter (Solved)
« on: February 10, 2017, 09:45:47 pm »
Hello,

Having browsed the forum, I can see posts regarding this simple screenshooter program that relate to PeppermintOS 6. But nothing more immediate.

I prefer xfce4-screenshooter as I can capture a specific region of my screen, and immediately post the image to share with friends. It works great with PeppermintOS 7, so where do I need help?

Well that is in the keyboard mapping. I cannot assign PrtScr key from the Peppermint Control Center. I click add+, enter the command, but cannot assign the correct keyboard shortcut. I can assign something like CTRL+SHFT+S.

Is there a way to map the PrtScr that I have missed. Maybe there is a manual of command line method?

Hello All,

Finally got Peppermint OS 7 fine tuned to how I like it, but one thing is missing for me.

Is it possible to add a plugin to the system tray to control usb drives. Mount/Unmount/Open etc.....

Thanks

Software & Applications / Pychess (Solved)
« on: June 18, 2016, 07:36:43 pm »
I am a big, big, chess player! Since ditching windows I rely on limited resources. But Pychess is an excellent little program I use to access FICS.

Generally it works well, but it doesn't play nice with the Peppermint-Dark theme, so I had to return to Peppermix. No big deal, I like that theme also.

I do have a small problem though. The sound files do not work. Usually there are sounds that help signal a move being played, a games starting etc. These are useful when doing more than one thing at a time.

I noticed they are all greyed out by the program and thought there may be an issue with sound drivers. I just joined the Peppermint ranks from Elementary OS, and it works 100% with Freya, so I ask for help.

Note: You cannot check the Play Sounds option.

I use Guayadeque as a music player, for easy access to Shoutcast. Sounds play ok there. I removed Pulse Audio to use gnome-alsamixer but no sound at all then. So returned to Pulse Audio and consulted the experts - you guys.  :)

Hope you can help.

What are you running Peppermint on? / My Own Build with AMD A6
« on: June 18, 2016, 07:24:08 pm »
Hi,

I was using an old HP desktop but decided to build a budget PC. Gigabyte Motherboard, AMD Processor, 8gb Ram and 500GB HDrive and Hey Presto!

I must admit to experimenting with linux versions. Elementary to Manjaro, Lunbuntu, Kubuntu..... Linux Mint for a long time when I had the HP!! But stumbled upon Peppermint scanning through Distrowatch.

Because it's a light distro very fast. Plenty to learn to install some favourite programs.

Needed wine for Stronghold Crusader (an oldie but a goodie).

All good so far.
