New Users / how to delete a message
« on: November 25, 2019, 10:57:19 am »
hI, and thanks in advance for the help.
is it possible to delete a message off the message board?
for example, posted a question a few minutes ago, then figured out the answer myself.  so i came back on here to delete the message and save someone else the time of replying, but i can only figure out how to modify the message, not delete it.

Software & Applications / Re: access iphoto database from external drive

Can you provide the full path to the "masters" folder ?

eg. /media/iphotos/master

EXTERNAL/Photos/Our Pictures.photoslibrary/Masters
[the name of the external HD is different and "Our Pictures.." is actually our last name]

I have some actual experience on this subject.

I do not know for certain if this will help, but when my Linux "mentor" and I tried to download pics for someone to their Linux OS that just would'nt open jpegs on his computer from his old iphone six, we did something a little different.

We uploaded everything in his iphotos folder to something called "pcloud" by creating a pcloud account, and then downloaded that same entire folder back down to his Peppermint 8 OS Linux computer.

Regards, The Omen

i think i would have to do this from the original mac. i tried to do this from my linux using the iphoto library from the external HD, but got the same "permission denied" message as before. Also i have hundreds of GB's of pics and videos, so i'm hoping for a faster solution than uploading and downloading them all.  but if this is the only option it will be great to have.  thank you.

What happens if you right-click a (single for now) photo, select "Copy", then right-click on your Peppermint desktop and select Paste .. has the copy now on the desktop still got the red X ?, and if not can it be opened ?

i can't copy the file. i tried to right click the "copy to", then right click and "copy", the just drag and drop.  all with the same result.  a message that basically said "Permission denied"

Software & Applications / access iphoto database from external drive

Hi all, and thanks in advance for the help.  As I continue to distance myself from the universe of Apple, the next step for me is accessing my years of photos stored in iphoto on an external HD.

Here is my problem-- I can access the external drive, open the iphotos folder, open the "masters" folder, and find the actual .jpg photos. BUT, I can't open them.  On each .jpg icon, there is a red X. that seems like a bad sign.  As I understand it, this is a permissions problem.  how do i fix this? they are all my photos, but the imac that we have used for years has gotten too old and bogged down to even be able to open the iphoto library anymore.

how do i access these photos in peppermint?

New Users / Arduino serial port problem
« on: September 13, 2019, 07:18:25 pm »
My son's Arduino won't connect on peppermint.  It is my understanding that it is a common Linux problem that can be fixed, but I can't understand how. Upon opening the Arduino IDE reads "java.lang.NullPointerException thrown while loading"

what do i do? please use small words :)
thanks in advance.

New Users / How to dim desktop monitor
« on: August 12, 2019, 09:12:36 am »
Ok I feel ridiculous for asking this, but how do I dim my monitor on a desktop computer with peppermint OS? I’ve never had any trouble with this on my laptop with  peppermint, but I just added peppermint to an old dell desktop that I picked up somewhere and I can’t figure out how to do it. The keyboard does not seem to offer any obvious help. Everything else seems to work fine. The monitor is a gateway with no obvious buttons either.  ::)

Software & Applications / default keylink
« on: May 11, 2019, 02:15:59 pm »
thank you in advance for the help.
I created a new user account on a laptop that runs peppermint 7.  whenever i log in to this account (its a "desktop user" account, not admin), a box pops up and wants the account password to access a "default keylink" for wifi connectivity.  after i give the password, it then disconnects the computer from wifi and i have to reconnect.
this has never happened on the other account on the same laptop.
how do i make that go away?

Software & Applications / parental control apps

Hi, my son loves coding and electronics so I'm getting him started young on peppermint, but i would like to be able to monitor things like how much time he is spending on the computer and when, what apps he's using, etc.  is there an app for that or something already built in to peppermint?
i already have an app installed for web monitoring.  u use an app called accountability2you for that.

thank you.

Advanced Topics / How To Access "Time Machine" files on peppermint
« on: March 03, 2019, 11:45:11 am »
Thank you in advance for the help.

I need to access an old apple time machine backup to access a file that has recently become very important.  When i plug in the external hardrive, it mounts with no problem, but it gets weird after that.
I can open backups.backupdb > my imac > [dated folder] > macintosh HD > users > [my user]
BUT when I try to open the 'documents' folder (or any other folder from here), the folder is displayed with a red X on it and I get the message, "You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of '[Documents, or whatever folder]'".

how to I access my data?

thank you for the help.  i have inputted the solution from PCNetSpec and following is my info for alynur.  i'll assume i'm cured unless i see the error notice again :)
