Software & Applications / Re: [solved]nvidia drivers freezing
« on: October 10, 2017, 06:31:24 pm »
I was given a good laptop to use and I found out the nvidia drivers made it freeze up.  The laptop would have this mysterious popping sound too.  It works great without NVIDIA drivers I think it was for the 9xxx series.  Dell does not even have replacement parts for my Vostro laptop either.  So no playing 3d hardware acceleration stuff for me.  It is okay it plays media just fine.

Software & Applications / Re: Bulk Music File Renaming/Retagging?
« on: October 10, 2017, 06:27:17 pm »
I have yet to find a MP3 Renaming/Retagging app that is better than TagScanner.  This is a Windoz program and will require WINE to get it to run on Peppermint.  I have looked at all the Linux programs that do this and cant find one as good as this.  If your ok with having WINE installed then I would give this a spin.

You can try the Danish too Mp3TAG.  It is for Windows.  I think it runs best under the wine development version.
(It can make mp4 thumbnails which is great for Windows & maybe Apple)

You would have to create a USB stick with extra space in it.  I would add another partition to it for storage.  It depends on the way the ISO was put on the USB drive.  I go the ISO dump route by using the DD tool but if you go another route the file system will not 100% be read only.

It is based from Debian.

Just a little side dish.  There is a project called "parted magic" that loads the whole OS on to RAM and the USB stick can be removed.  I don't think it is in the debian universe anywhere.  I just mention it because of the technique they used not the OS relationship to Linux.

If you think you can do it.  You can also use the app 'netcat' to transfer files over a network.

What are you running Peppermint on? / Re: Lost Wireless Icon.
« on: November 21, 2016, 12:32:33 pm »
I just installed Peppermint 7 on a Acer Inspire One Cloudbook. After connecting with my wireless router. My Wireless icon disappeared. I am still connected to WiFi no problem. But, how do I get the icon back?

Spoiler (click here to view / hide)

On a macro level, it looks like your wifi is not active anymore.  I would check the device to see if it is functioning and if it is then check to see the status of the firmware driver that runs it.  I would even go and inspect the permissions on your wireless firmware driver to see if it has enough permissions to run.

Advanced Topics / Wine 1.9.22 compiled package to share
« on: November 07, 2016, 01:59:49 pm »
I made this on peppermint linux.  I know that the 32bit one works but there was something with the 64bit one.
It is experimental and I compiled and made the package myself.  Maybe dork around with World of Warcraft with it until it does not work again.
I just want to share as a peppermint user.

Software & Applications / Copying files in the windows manager..
« on: November 01, 2016, 03:08:15 pm »
I noticed from Peppermint 6 to Peppermint 7 that something was set up to copy one file at a time instead of them in a series.  Does anybody know if this is a setting or hard coded into the windows manager?  Where is the setting at if anyone knows how to change this behavior?

General Discussion / Re: How Fast Is Peppermint 7 ?
« on: November 01, 2016, 10:58:27 am »
I say it is fast enough if it was installed on a solid state drive.  You may have to recompile a few things to make get a speed boost because it is a generic kernel, but overall it is fast enough.

I would try finding the linux source code and compiling a custom module.

Try finding some network adapter source code and compile a custom driver.

Networking / Re: Wifi Disconnects Automatically
« on: October 02, 2016, 10:20:07 am »
To troubleshoot, I would test the wifi connection with a network bridge first to see if the connection becomes solid.  I would also test analyze the signal strength on the device and neighboring devices to see if there is an imbalance.  You can also try to put foil on your router to increase directional strength.
