Title: New Peppermint webhost in progress
Post by: josephd on June 07, 2020, 06:54:36 pm
Hi Everyone,
I've finished the first step in migrating us off of our old host.

For the next few days you'll notice an extremely generic forum theme and no security certificate. As well as some broken features.

I need to let the DNS propagation of our new host complete before tackling the finer features of our forum such as logos, avatars, shortcuts and everything we're accustomed too.

In the meantime feel free to upload avatar and comment and reply around as usual.

Thanks everyone,
Joe

Good morning everyone,
Looks like the DNS completed overnight and everything appears to be working as expected. Here's whats on my plate for this evening.

Hope all is well.
Joe

Evening everyone,
I performed a few updates I'd like to let you all know about.

Email notifications are still not functional so that's next on my list.  ;)

Thank you, josephd, for updating and maintaining Peppermint.  Since I see the forum is up and running again, I thought I should tell you, just in case that you didn't know, that our start pages are down.  But, again,  josephd, thank you updating our beloved Peppermint, as well as moving us off the old host!  :)

Pepp favicon doesn't always show on tab. I like the slightly darker font, but it might be to big for some. But one can always ctrl minus ;)

before October of last year, i would have loved this font, however I went thru the cataract surgery on both eyes and i can see perfectly again, so this font size is annoying now....  way too big...

tried that and i can't find a suitable size, looks like the only way to fix this issue, is to go back to the old font, which nobody ever complained about until it was changed....

I believe vinDSL meant oembed where the video is presented not just linked to.

rjm65 I'll see what I can do about the font size. Its tricky, for instance I'm on a 14" 108Op laptop that really hates my eyes at 12px sized fonts.

In the meantime There are two default themes you can switch to, both feature smaller fonts.

Visit your Forum Profile > Look and Layout > Current Theme "click change"

As for the start page that's on my to-do list for this weekend.

maybe drop the font 1 or 2 sizes, outside of that all good so far :D

Previously, I was running the forums with 110% zoom, and it still looked janky. And, 125% was too much.

As a workaround, how about a lappy theme and a desktop theme, commiserate with the link I posted?  :))

The start page has been restored at https://start.peppermintos.com/

Thank you, josephd.

Several of us are also using the two popular Peppermint start pages below too.  When I click onto either link, I get notified with a  Page Not Found message, and then I get redirected to our standard installation start page.  Without being too much of a PITA. is there a way to get the two links below up and running again?   :-\

I know personally I've got about 7 installations around the State of New Hampshire featuring either one of the two start pages below.  And I know we've got other old time Pepperminters using the start pages below too. ;)

And, again, thanks, josephd.

P.S

I like the look of our new forum.  The fonts are larger, I believe.

Thank you, josephd.  For the longest time, I,  too, never had any idea how popular these two start pages had become.  But, yeah, I believe these two start pages have helped bring many a wandering soul in Linux over to Peppermint Linux OS.  I know I've used them as a selling point, and they're now part of the magic and history of what PCNetSpec brought to Peppermint.  Thank you, josephd, for helping to keep PCNetSpec's Peppermint magic alive.:)

@Rayzer send us a screenshot. It might be a good facelift to deploy when peppermint 11 comes out. Particularly if it will have similar theming.

I was thinking that although our current default start page resembles the Forum a new one could be inspired by the distro itself.

It'd be really cool if our forum, might pick up color/design/shading cues from our default wallpaper & start page theming too... this blinding white is really getting to me...

I invite everyone to take a look https://peppermintos.com

I upgraded our website to a responsive and better supported theme.

I had no intention of changing our website until a full redesign but many of the plugins and the WordPress theme itself had some annoying flaws. The kind of things only another web developer would notice.  You couldn't tell by looking at it but the underlying features were a bit of a mess.

There was an odd glitch yesterday evening where the host wasn't connecting to WordPress.org and I led me to clean things up and use only the features we really need.

Hi @josephd,

You have done a very nice job on the website and have taken notice of your new title of Website Admin next to your name and pic.

I have also noticed that other qualified people are being delegated to what their talents are with Peppermint OS so all the "eggs" are no longer being kept in one basket, YAY.

This is a good thing that is sure to be for the best in being able to allow Pep to continue far into the future.

I have noticed one thing though about the new improved forum website that I do not know if it is by design or possibly overlooked.

When i am on the main index page or when i am typing a response such as this one, the Peppermint logo is present on the upper left hand side of my browser tab.

However, when i click onto a particular thread to read it and/or bookmark it into my browser, the Pep icon is no longer there and only a generic icon is present and I now have a bunch of just generic icons in my bookmarks instead of the Pep icons.

Is this by design or just overlooked in the improvement process ?

Warm regards,

The Omen

Post by: josephd on June 19, 2020, 09:59:08 am
@The Omen, The missing icon is an oversight. Our forum's template must use more than one header file. I'll look into it over the weekend, likely an easy fix.

I placed "Website Admin" in my forum profile so people could easily find the person responsible for website/forum maintenance. While clarifying that although I'm an Admin in the my forum description that doesn't include moderation.

I'm aiming that we take advantage of our distributed community. I happen to be good at WordPress development and hosting, others are fantastic at community building and technical support. We've got some amazingly talented people in our community and we complement each other very well. I couldn't have accomplished a lot of this without the support of our entire team.
