Title: Peppermint 11 question/discussion etc.
Post by: The Omen on June 02, 2020, 02:31:45 pm
Hi folks,

I know  P-11 is in developement stages and came across the following article in the news that no doubt may effect its developement:

https://www.theregister.com/2020/06/02/linux_mint_team_snap/

When it comes to either flatpaks or snaps, I have been taught to avoid these as .deb does not carry all the bloat that the other 2 bring on board.

I have deleted/purged all flatpak and snap softtware manager systems from my Peppermint systems because i never intend to ever use tham.

Canonical is now, according to the article, putting in a backdoor as they continue to focus on snap as being their preferred way to install software (it's in the article), And using that backdoor will force the snap software manager on users without consent for any of the software that they will now, such as chromium browser, as well as any future, as they see fit, to offer as a snap only.

I always was taught that Linux is all about the freedom and not propriotory like Microsoft and Apple products.

This would be a game changer for me to force me away from Peppermint, which i love.

Is it possibly the time to look more into a more Debian and less Ubuntu source for future versions of Peppermint considering what Canonical is now trying to force ?

What is the position of the P-11 developers on this issue, as well as us Peppermint users ?

Warm Regards,

The Omen

While I can't say anything specifically as #teampeppermintOS continues to sort thru our inherited code. It's safe to cautiously say, we're aware of the issues. They're hashing out a prospective plan which will let our end users know, PeppermintOS works best with .debs

Forcing things I don't like. And a backdoor is a no go even more for me ;)

I suspect someone is going to package Chromium as a deb because it's open source and it's also available as a binary on the project website.

Yep nothing wrong with Deb files whatsoever, they are smaller and more reliable. I don't use Chromium anymore, Firefox does everything I need and now that SSD's are so cheap, it opens just as if not quicker than chromium, or Chrome. Plus the advantage of Firefox is more security which is left to the users discretion. In Chromium and Chrome forever needing to delete your history, plus they are holding to Google too. I don't like the way Google takes over everything, where as Duck Duck Go don't take anything from you. I love using Perknh's homepage too, that PCNetSpec made him. https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,5610.msg92099.html#msg92099

Me too!  I'm so happy to see that image when logging into Peppermint this morning.  Thanks, clatterfordslim.

I'm forever grateful to PCNetSpec for these start pages.  perknh's personal start pages really are the BEST START PAGES EVER!  :)

Here's an image of version #2:

updated that start page with a more modern look, replace the image files with mine then go to line 62 in the html and edit

to alt="Peppermint" width="838" height="119"

https://www108.zippyshare.com/v/aQcVFKML/file.html

with the folder on the desktop i had to move the html file to the desktop and it shows proper then. dont know how to setup specific locations as i know nothing about programming

I duno know, if i got this thread right - ideas for 11;

When i am allowed to please them, who created; and in case if it is possible...
Call me "Old-fashion", i am fine with it;

But i welcome the X-respin an plug in, of FXCE (insteadt two row-whiskas menu) One Row Starter Menu (like PM6)
I would welcome it, when it will find place inside 11 too;
and also... the icon Theme of PM6

Explaination:
I feel familar with Peppermint since ONE (on my netbook) and it was till PM6
After 6 i tryed the new ones - but i didnt like the look and feel (remeber the stones);
so i keept 6 as long as poss; but last year, i had to switch
(Thx to PCNetSpec -afterwards- spending time, to explain the look and feel back, and also (fayzer?) who helped me this days again)

I have to do with computers since C-64, and the big switches, doesnt matter, if it was MAC OS, or M$ Win,
was always very hard
I welcome the new features, but i hated, when old -good things- are gone

I am User, not programmer, so i duno care, HOW it work inside a machine, and why,
i am only interesed in an OS, which work fine -as PM do it

Maybe, and i understand this, the youngsters would have a lot of *bling-bling*,
but pls. let -and as i got it, it is possible- the option in, for old, stubern ppl., like me...

After Mark told me (and few others), how to fix "my" problems,
my old love to PM burn again brighter and higher as before;
cause, i duno where is the difference to other Distris;
but..PM work out of the box mostly perfectly

Thx 4 listing my few words

Different users, different preferences ;) I like the current theming and Papirus icons (I use the Papirus dark instead of the Pepirus wich is more modern, but with red instead of blue color) I don't care much for the startmenu. I hardly ever use it.

thats a standard xfce feature, if you do not wish to use the whiskermenu then you can add the Applications Menu instead by right clicking the panel and add new items. then once added you can move it on the panel to where you want it. if you want to remove the whiskermenu you can right click and remove.
Alternatively peppermint 10 has a Xfce Panel Switch which allows you to emulate the pep6 layout

Meanwhile, I use the start menu constantly because I don't like having icons all over my screen @Johan ... nor do I open programs via the terminal. So different strokes for different folks. Which is precisely why the modularity of Linux is so beautiful...

We do have two German speaking Trusted Users on our team @LordKaan, if that is more comfortable for you. You'll need to wait for them to respond though. Otherwise, hope you are enjoying your chance to revive your high school English. I have ventured back into my high school French on our Facebook presence. I am only able to do so because my other half is 100% fluent , often mistaken for a native whenever he's in France. Same for his Russian, 100% fluent, though they think he's Estonian.

Peppermint 11 will not revert to the PM 6 style menu. What you are doing to retain that elder menu may well continue to work. Others from #teampeppermintOS will have to advise later, as I am not personally versed in package/code intricacies. Ahh! I see @rayzer has stepped up!

 ;)

@rayzer: But then you can't use the superkey to open the menu. There is an option to enable it though if I remember correctly :-\

with the "new" issu of 10 it is included - and i found by my self

So, it is just my please, make 11 as u want; but pls. let the option in too

(Sorry my english - hope u get, what i mean)

As i got -now without translation- there are no plans, to have (even with/by instaling by user) a single/simple one row menu

Sad to hear it,
cause i am fine -even when i have to implent by my self- with the single row menu...

About german speaking usres.

I am not that often here; so there is no need for it; but thank you

The things from above, was just a thought/wish/input from user-side

I hope  peppermint 11 is going to have flatpak support built into to software center. right now its kind of hard to telll which package is a deb or snap or flatpak.  i use flatpak  version of vscode because i am a beginer developer  and i dont trust micrososft.  their developement products world class. But their attitude is horrid and i cant stand their sneaky ways. so flatpak is great for such applications being containerized and separate from the system.

Be cautious of Brave. There's a business model attached to it: https://davidgerard.co.uk/blockchain/2020/06/06/the-brave-web-browser-is-hijacking-links-and-inserting-affiliate-codes/
