Title: Peppermint OS 10 - Acer Install Issues
Post by: colmsmyth on May 25, 2020, 05:09:10 am
Hi all

Okay, firstly I am new to Linux but not new to coding in general but I guess I would say please assume me as a total noob  :)

I have an Acer Aspire E15 laptop with 8GB of RAM which is my daughters but sadly Windows 10 runs like a lame dog. So I wanted to install Peppermint OS along side Windows 10 so that for everyday surfing the web and school work she could do quickly but still have a fallback to W10 if needed.

So what I have done so far:

1 - Create a bootable USB with the ISO image
2- Tried the "Try without installing, works perfect"
3 - Disabled secure boot
4 - Installed from the live version, but every time it gets to about 80% (grub2 install) it hangs and just sits there, never finishes.

What's annoying is its already done the perm partitioning so i have to fix that after every failed attempt.

I did read that Acer laptops are a bit of a pain for installing Linux.

If someone could direct me that would be great, perhaps there is another Bios/UEFI thing I have not done or something.

Thanks in advance

Colm

My first search on the forum with ACER, turned up this tutorial:

https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,2118.0.html (https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,2118.0.html)

Even though it references Peppermint 6, most things are similar, perhaps it will help you? Also, in order to let our forum moderators help you, next time you are in the LiveUSB environment, please provide us the terminal output from:

Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz
Here's another handy tutorial reference, just in case you are unfamiliar with how to do so...

Welcome To Peppermint!

Thanks Spence, I think unfortunately as that guide was installing from Linux to another Linux it was not that helpful to me.....I am trying to install it using Windows.

The other issue I have is I can't get any terminal output as the install is done via the install wizard I guess and once it freezes that it, I have to crash the system.

I was hoping to attache an image I took but not sure how in this forum, looks like it needs to be loaded to some cloud share first.

However the point the install hangs is this:

Installing for x86_64-efi platform

This is part of the "Installing the 'grub2' package

Any ideas ?

Hi colmsmyth,

See this forum post (https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,7892.0.html) to learn how to post images in your postings.  ;)

You have me totally confused when you say you are trying to install PeppermintOS from Windows. That cannot be done unless you are trying to install into a VM -- but I doubt that you are trying to that. In short: you cannot install from within your Windows OS. When you run installation from the live desktop of PeppermintOS ("Try without installing"), you are not in Windows, but within the Peppermint linux OS.

Please supply the information about your computer that spence requested! This can often provide the information needed to help solve your issue. That is why he requested it.  ;)

Thanks Slim....you should see the image now below.

Sorry for any confusion, its all slightly new to me. So I am trying to install Peppermint OS 10 along side Windows 10. When I launch it from USB and hit Try without installing it all work perfectly.......

So then I click the icon on the Peppermint OS desktop that says install and it goes through the process. I pick the options i want, most important of all is the "along side Windows".

Then as you can see in the image, at this point every time it hangs, so should I be running the code:

Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz
....before I hit install, and if so then my problem will be that when it hangs I would not be able to access the terminal window as everything hangs, not just the install windows, the whole system.

Hopefully this clarifies things a bit more and many thanks in advance, any help is much appreciated.

instead of booting up peppermint and running the installer while using the live session, maybe try installing it from the peppermint menu where it asks you to try live or install to disk. some distros can be weird like that, if it doesnt work in live mode just use the boot menu installer instead

Hi Rayzer

I have tried just hitting install as you said from the menu but same issue, just hangs on same section as the screenshot.

When you say try the boot menu option, what exactly do you mean "if it doesnt work in live mode just use the boot menu installer instead" as I think I have tried everything, i.e. hitting F12 boot the bootable USB and hit install from there, still hangs.

Thanks a mill

this menu i was talking about but im guessing from your post above youve tried it already. reading through the thread it looks like youve tried the usual stuff. the only other thing i can think if is running ubiquity from the terminal and see what happens.

have you checked this installing guide, its for an older version of ubuntu but maybe it can help you check settings https://askubuntu.com/questions/627416/acer-aspire-e15-will-not-dual-boot

Thanks, yes all this is norm for me.....when you say run ubiquity from the terminal, is this when I am in the live session (try without installing), if yes or no, either way what do I do to try it, what commands etc ?

yea try from the live session and see if it works. if it still fails its probably something in the bios that needs to be changed. from what ive seen on ubuntu groups acers are usually troublesome to get linux running on but people have managed it.

Thanks okay.....

What would I need to type into the terminal to start the install that way ?

The instructions in my link should work but make sure which is your Peppermint partition since you're dual booting. Type this in the terminal and post the result somehow:

Code: [Select]
sudo blkid

Thanks Spence, I think unfortunately as that guide was installing from Linux to another Linux it was not that helpful to me.....I am trying to install it using Windows.

Please, let's clarify ... did you create a LiveCD? a LiveDVD? or a LiveUSB for installing PeppermintOS?

I find it difficult to add anything to this other than to ask why you have not yet posted the output of:

Code: [Select]
inxi -Fzin one of your posts? We even gave you a link explaining how to do this.  :-\

Hi colmsmyth, I have one suggestion you can try, since you already have an ext4 partition made for the Peppermint installation, why don't you select "Something else" instead of along side and select the ext4 partition for installation?

OK, there seems to be a specific thing with this model, I've linked to the Acer thread about it already. Unless you tell it not to write to NVram during bootloader installation it will fail every time. I don't know if the OP is even reading responses but I just wanted to reiterate this.

I guess, I know the answer . cause iit sounds very familar to me.

Let me guess: Your Acer have a mmc - storage device?

Okay, I saw sda;

But !!!!
I had the same Problem with an Acer (mmc) (As i could remember... Swift????) with any linux Distri (Ubuntu, mint, PM)

and it ever hang up, while writing grub

I got the recommandation, to try wit hsupergrub and other tools - which doesnt work on this device

Final Solution was: Prepare a HD on a other device (Dualboot: Win and Linux) -> copy 1:1  on a SD-Card; and from there on the Acer Device

This works -very well- till the moment, i made a upgrade of linux, and linux tryed to write again/modify grub...
He hang up.

Happyly i had the SD-Card still left; and remade the copy session
Now there is a big sticky on the device Never touch grub

As i got it (it was one year before): That the first problem was the mmc , the second one the Bios/UEFI of this device
Acer reject me, by explaining me: This device is not made for Linux (It is optimized/proofed under Win)
