Title: Webcam troubles - Device not found
Post by: justalexander3 on April 11, 2020, 07:17:56 pm
Hello.

First time posting and still a beginner to Linux. I've been using peppermint since P8 and I love it. But always had a problem with the webcam on this laptop. I have searched and never found a solution. It always says device not found. No problem on my other laptop after installing cheese but never any luck with this one and now this is the only computer I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi justalexander3,

It is almost impossible to help people with hardware issues without knowing anything about the hardware.  :-\ Open a terminal window and enter this command:

Code: [Select]
inxi -Fzthen copy the output and post it back here in your next message.  ;)

Regards,

check if these are installed.. you can do so by typing in terminal

Code: [Select]
sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras ffmpeg vlc guvcview

you might have to use the Tab button on the restricted extras part of the installation in order to proceed if its not already there, between them you might install the necessary codecs to get the audio video webcam working.
guvcview is a better option than cheese too as cheese tends to hate some ubuntu installs and will either not open or not show video.
once installed reboot & give it a go and get back to us

Terribly sorry guys! I posted this message and then immediately had a location change. I've been teaching overseas and now back home due to this virus situation. I'm back now and I appreciate any help!

Sorry bout the duplicate post. You can tell I'm a newbie.

I did try

sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras ffmpeg vlc guvcview

No need for tab as far as I can tell but I'm not sure of any additional codecs you mentioned. After rebooting started both cheese and guvcview with no luck.

Hi justalexander3, I also have a 2012 laptop, mine is a Samsung, and I have lost the ability to use my camera and mic for fb video chats. I think it might have something to do with the newer kernels because it did work before, I just don't remember when because I hardly used the laptop for video chats. I may have had P 7 installed back then and I think I had to have all the settings in Skype set correctly. I was thinking about installing P 7 back into it. but it's working so good with P 9 I hate to mess with it and, like I said, I don't use the laptop for video chats.
