Title: Peppermint project lead Mark Greaves (PCNetSpec) has passed away.
Post by: kendall on January 14, 2020, 01:27:08 pm
With a heavy heart I unfortunately have to inform you that Mark is no longer with us. Shane and I received word from one of Mark's sons that he passed away this morning after a 10 day hospital stay. Mark was among the best of us. His contributions to both Peppermint and to the desktop Linux world as a whole are incalculable and he will be sorely missed.

There are many unanswered questions at the moment and I'll try to be diligent in relaying relevant information. The future is unwritten, but for now let's collectively take some time to remember Mark, reflect on his contributions, and appreciate his patience, sense of community, and passion for his work that made him not only a great project lead, but a great person as well.

Thank you.

With great sorrow and condolences to his family,

I can only echo Slim.Fatz post
I am too devastated to say anything else right now.
Condolences to his family.
Regards Zeb...

It is only now slowly sinking in that I have lost a true friend. I only knew him through here and comments in live streams but Mark kept me honest and down to earth. His unquenchable desire to help people is something that I can only aspire to attain. He will forever be remembered in my heart.

I hope his closest family find some solace in knowing what a great community he built around him in Linux and each and every one of us offer our condolences to them in their darkest hour.

Goodbye my friend, I miss you so much 💔

Please pass along our condolences to his family for us.

If there is any way to send flowers or something else, please let us know

Wow, this is totally unexpected.  To say that Peppermint OS, his friends and colleagues, and Linux in general will miss him is an understatement.  May he rest in peace.

I'm in total shock.  We've all lost more than PeppermintOS's project leader.  Today, we've lost a dear friend and teacher.  My deepest condolences to Mark's family.  Thank you Mark for everything you taught me.  Your enthusiasm and love of this wonderful project was and will remain infectious.  You were one of a kind and I'll miss you mate.  Safe journey my friend - safe journey :'(.

I think your proposal is perfect.  First and foremost though, we must allow Mark's family to grieve and come to terms with their lost.  When the time is appropriate, I think we should definitely explore setting up a worthy memorial to honour our dear friend.

Mark was awesome!
He and I had great YouTube chats watching BDLL and Stevesveryown's streams.
He knew that Solus is the distro that grabbed me and that Peppermint is my second choice. We would respectfully tease each other about that.
Mark personally helped me a few times with Peppermint issues and I truly thank him for that.
My heart, love, and prayers go out to his family and friends.

What sad news.  I didn't have the honor of knowing Mark as long as most of you but his support, and blessings, for my budding channel on Peppermint will not be forgotten.  When he came into the chatroom of one of my early streams the first time I was amazed.  He was a great guy and will be missed.

This is so difficult to believe. A reminder that our time here is fragile and limited. Though I had only briefly known Mark in online interactions, the respect that was felt for him really reflects the esteem he was held in the community. May his family, friends, colleagues and co-contributors find solace in the fact that he positively touched so many of our lives in big and little ways alike.  My very sincerest condolences.

As we all are in shock and very upset I will always think of the good times I have had on this forum and the many, many people that Mark had helped. No matter how small the problem he would move heaven and Earth to help. I work night shifts and I would very often still see Mark on this forum still answering questions, way into the small wee hours. Mark I thought you'd gone on holiday after the knackering time getting Respin out? My heart goes out to your family. You rest now mate, we shall all look after Peppermint for you and keep you in our hearts.  :'(

Utterly devastating news.

I knew from light chatting with him on various people's streams that he was not very well, but this has come as a massive shock.

Rest in peace now Mark.
Huge condolences to his family.

Afternoon All

Normally I would say Good Afternoon but this is obviously not. I would like to echo the sentiments of the other posts in this thread, like you all, I'm stunned - Mark was but a year older than myself.
I don't know the circumstances, & frankly its non of my business, but I would like to extend my condolences to his family & friends, & to those of you that knew him through this community.
I couldn't class myself as a regular on here, & couldn't in all honesty call Mark a friend - I just didn't know him well enough - but whenever I needed help Mark was inevitably there & was indeed friendly.

He will be very sorely & sadly missed

RIP Mr Peppermint

I have only been here for a short while now, but will always remember Mr. Greaves as welcoming and helpful to a young newcomer like me.

I am shocked and surprised to read about his passing away just now in the forums.

I think we will all find it hard to think about Peppermint OS as well as the forums without him.

My prayers and condolences will be with Mr. Greaves family and friends at this sad time for them as well as for everyone on the forums who has been "touched" by his life and the time and help he has extended to everyone who has asked and many late night hours he spent here extending his help and advice.

My sadness and regards to all,

Hi very sad and good people,

I informed my friend who used to be on the forums of the passing of Mr. Greaves.

He did something I have never seen him do and I have known him for 7 yrs, and has only taken me on to teach me all about Linux, and Peppermint in particular, over the last three years. I have now just turned 18 a couple months ago.

He cried, I mean he really cried, which made me cry.

He told me that this was a "passing of an era".

Even though he is no longer here on the forums, Until now, I did not realise just how much honor and respect he held for Mr Greaves.

Even as he was crying, he said, "Mark needs to be honored for his many contributions".

He said that maybe the next version of Peppermint should be called the "Mark Greaves" edition or the "PCNetSpec" edition.

He also said to me that all of "us" who are members of the forums should make ourselves totally available in whatever way "we" can, to be of help to those left behind to help out to whatever we can do, to help the developers to continue with Peppermint as a tribute to Mark Greaves.

Warmest and best regards to all family, friends, associates, and all of us that Mr.Greaves ever spoke to and helped here,

The Omen

What terrible news, I have been using Peppermint since the days of Peppermint 3, and at the time, with so much to learn, this forum was a great help. I have often told friends how nice it was to have a community here (even if I don't write often) that is so helpful, and Mark was a huge part of that. What a tragic loss, he has helped so many people.

I'm sad for his family and the community, from what I understand, he was well-loved by everyone.  My condolences to his family and friends.  I hope the community of Peppermint continues to carry on his legacy.

Did not know of Mark and never researched Peppermint OS much.

From the little I have read and heard the last few days I see that he was a good guy.

Made this account just to pay respects and say that this is a loss not only to this Distro but to the Linux community as a whole in my opinion from what I have gathered about Mark.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Hi very sad and good people,

I informed my "Linux Jedi Master", my "Mentor", AKA, (He who shall not be Named), of the passing of Mr.

Even though he is banned for life here on the forums, Until now, I did not realise just how much honor and respect he held for Mr Greaves.

Heck, I thought these two hated each other, Im just a dumb kid. What do i know. Sounds to me like they both respected each other despite whatever their fight and differences was ever about.

His tears are not  lieing, at least to me.

He did something else I have never seen him do in front of me.

He opened a bottle of something called "glen fidiche" or something like that and raised his glass to Mr. Greaves and just said. "You sir will be sorely missed", then sat down and cried.

I cried as well, you would think that these two were friends, not frenemies.

I guess I have much to learn about how adults really feel about each other, especially when one passes away and they can never take back what they ever said to each other.

I have seen a side of my "Mentor" as well.  I did not think he had emotions like this.

Warmest and best regards to all family, friends, associates, and all of us that Mr.Greaves ever spoke to and helped here,

The Omen

He helped me too.

EDIT, I will only tell you who the "Mentor" is, (He who shall not be Named), ONLY if moderators will promise me not to ban me for doing this, I was warned by Mr. Greaves to never do so, and will never do so, Unless I have Moderators promise that this is OK.

My young friend what your Mentor is, in my 70 years experience, is a Gentleman...A word not used much in these days but is truly descriptive and speaks volumes as the the character of your friend...cherish him.

Dear Jayne,

Please accept my condolences. I hope you and your sons will forgive me for daring to borrow a "Britishcism" but I am completely gutted. I think I speak for most of us on #teampeppermint when I say we are ever so grateful that the three of you shared Mark... umm Our Leige @PCNetSpec with us for all of these years. All I can say is thank you.

It's strange though, I had hoped to wander thru and have a beer with him one day. Though we never met in person , and he may have grumbled under his breath about my cluelessness, the www and this forum allowed me to consider him a friend. I hope you three may find some wee bit of consolation in knowing he will be missed all around the globe.

Ever so grateful,
spence

This thread is sad and beautiful at the same time. Our time is limited and helping people with your knowledge is certainly a good way to spend your life. I admired how Mark solved every single problem people posted on this forum. He had a good sense of humor too. His presence here was one of the reasons, Peppermint has become one of my favorite Linux distributions. He was a role model for many of us.

I was looking for anything about Mr. Greaves to know better about him and Peppermint and found this interview he did last month Dec. 9th 2019.

In the article, he mentions the original founders Shane and Kendall, Who also appear as Administrators for the forums.

I do not know if this was just done recently or not but I think it is nice that they are here with us right now.

Please enjoy what i think, judging by the date, is probably Mr. Greaves last interview.

Zeb,
I had thought this was a good interview.  I learned more about Mark and where his influences began.  I had thought Peppermint 6 was a big change from 5, not knowing at the time Mark was the reason. I think it was also about the time the article came out that I had learned PCNetSpec in the forum was Mark.  Okay, never accuse me of being quick.  It was through this article, along with small chats in the forum with Mark, that really solidified my love for this community he helped foster.   It is sometimes hard to put into words how some people, in many little ways, influence us and make us feel special.  Mark definitely was one of those people.

It is very sad to enter the forum and find out about such serious news. I don't usually write here, because I've never had problems with what it is and it will always be my favorite operating system. My deepest condolences to the family, acquaintances and users. A day to remember that a part of Mark, will always be with everyone. Rest in peace.

He most certainly was special Steve, I and lots of other people never met Mark in the flesh, but being on this forum we never had to he welcomed everyone with open arms and his heart of gold. Never before have I met someone or conversed with someone who just was so down to earth and always so generous with his time, for helping people hanging out with people in the forums chatting with him, the laughing with him. The hard work that Mark put into making this forum what it is and not to forget the users too, who follow Mark's lead. I absolutely love this Forum and Peppermint. You would never ever get this with a Microsoft forum. We are all one big happy family and it's that feeling of I wonder what problems people are having today, or you might see something on the web that was interesting and you just know you have to share it here on the forum. Through our conversations we had with Mark we all  got to know him in our own way and it's those conversations I will hold onto forever. I miss him like mad I really do he helped make not just mine but everybody's lives bright. Had a bad day go onto the Peppermint forums and see just the calmness all around. Dizzy Egg men help an awful lot on this forum to brighten your day up too. Mark definitely had a way of pulling everyone together as a family and Peppermint OS is full of his magic and love.

If you scroll down to Johan's comment after the article it says November 2nd, 2020, 9:50pm. Weird.

Here's a link to it.  It hurts, but it's beautiful.  It truly honors PCNetSpec.

Well said Zeb

Hello everyone its Jayne, Marks wife. just to let you all know we watched the video tribute that BDLL did the other night, I have to admit I cried many many tears hearing what people said about Mark, I know he spent alot of hours chatting and helping people my friends children used to call him "The Man that lives on the sofa"..that's where he was happy, on the sofa, laptop in front of him chatting and helping people. We often joked that if we ever moved we would have to take the sofa with him still on it :D, not only did he look after all of you, he also looked after me, I have MS and he was my carer, I think that basically tells you what kind of man he was, He was also very private in the "Real world" a few close friends, didn't like the spotlight and hated his picture being taken or being centre of attention,  so I am just so glad he had all of you , the night he died he asked me to tell ALL the people he knew that he loved them, he really loved them, So I am passing that on to you all too. He loved you all and was so very very proud of Peppermint and its community, Thank you ALL for your support, Our sons Dan and Marcus are reading the messages as am I and we are taking great comfort from them. God Bless all of you.

I am so so shocked and saddened by this... RIP Mark...

I haven't used Linux long, but heard of Peppermint from English Bob on YouTube, and haven't looked back since, it's such a fantastic linux distro and the community is outstanding, he's done an absolutely amazing job, not just by creating a great distro but bringing linux users from all backgrounds together.

Hi Jayne,

Thank you very much for sharing this post with us! It is somewhat easier for me (and, I am sure, for everyone here) to read one of Mark's last messages to us.
We are all so grateful for what he has done for us, for what he has given us, for what he has taught us. We will never forget him.  :'( :-*

Please also accept my sincere condolences.

I wish you and the family all the best in this most difficult time,

Thank you for sharing some of Mark's final thoughts with us.  We also loved him.  He was a dear friend and teacher.  Be comforted in the knowledge, that people from all over the planet, have benefitted from his expertise, patience and kindness.  He literally changed people's lives for the better  ;).  We all miss him immensely  :'(.

I am honoured to have known Mark.  He was an incredible, one of a kind man.  My condolences to you and your family.

Hi Jayne,
Thank you for sharing his last message to us, we all loved him too. Also thank you for sharing Mark with us here at Peppermint. I shed a tear every time I come on here, because of all the love everyone has written. We all knew Mark in our own ways and he will stay in our hearts forever.

He'll probably be looking at these messages everyone has sent saying don't, you've made me embarrassed or something. I'll see if I can find the post I posted ages ago, that Mark deserves a accolade for the amount of time he puts in helping others. He replied with words like the above.

My condolences to you and your family.

Mark Stagg AKA Clatterfordslim.

Jayne,

Two quotes come to mind from "It's A Wonderful Life":

Quote
Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?

Quote
Remember, George: no man is a failure who has friends.

I am not normally this deep and retrospective but I felt these quotes appropriate.  I understand the struggles you are going through.  Us going through the loss of Mark bears no weight like it does for you.  I just want to say to you, Thank you for sharing Mark with us.  You are in our thoughts.

A bit late arrived, but I just registered in this forum only to express condolences to his family and loved ones. I thought I must thank to him as well as all the community for the gorgeous master piece, one of the best Linux distribution I've ever installed so far.
I've never met Mark, but I'd read through many articles in the forum at the end of last year, and found myself feel so comfortable.
I'd been much awaiting for him to get back and turn off snowing.., but I got to know the very sad news.
I'm running PM 20 respin on my laptop at work and my boys' laptop at home as well.
At work, PM functions well for my every single task and never got troubled for dual screen which other distributions used to have problems
A peer of mine got installed PM 10 for his work(EDA)
For English is not my mother tongue, I couldn't express my heart fully, but I wish he rest in peace and God blessings be always with his family.
Because of him and PM community, my life here has been going far better.
I owe all you guys. Please keep your good work.
Much appreciated,
woody from South Korea

So sorry to hear this sad news!

Mark is probably the reason why I continued to use, and now only use Linux. His friendliness and also his quick reply whenever I asked, helped me a lot.

I do not use Peppermint atm. But, I am very thankful for all the help Mark gave me! I can not express myself better in english because english is not my mother tongue.

Thanks...

Well... @PCNetSpec aka Mark Greaves IS a singular person... with an enormously oversized presence here and on many other linux forums @Brotherred. We are lucky that he posted so prodigiously, for his nearly superhuman output, helps the folks he gathered to help him test his work before each release keep Peppermint up and running.

 :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

There is a Memorial Fund posted by @PCNetSpec aka Mark Greaves's heirs:

Many members have requested a memorial fund for [@PCNetSpec aka] Mark to honour his legacy and to help his family, which the family is eternally grateful. The support we have received is immense and is helping us come to terms with what has happened. All donations will go directly to [Mark's wife's] treatment for her Multiple Sclerosis, for which Mark was her main carer. More information can be found in the memorial fund page below. https://www.gofundme.com/f/memorial-fund-for-mark-greaves-peppermintos-ceo (https://www.gofundme.com/f/memorial-fund-for-mark-greaves-peppermintos-ceo)

Alternatively one can contribute more directly, likely with fewer fees deducted, via the donations site Mark has always had here at the lower right of The PeppermintOS Store:

First: Excuse my english - it's not my mother-langua;

I wouldnt make the help of this community smaller -thx, to all who helps "beginners/Users" like me;

on the other hand... i guess Mark had the right feeling, when ppl. like me, came in, ask for help,
and -never tired- reply things 5 times, when ppl. like me, still didnt understand, what to do...

Like a father, feeding and teaching/leading a baby into world...
and even, when i never saw him,
but i could feel the smile on his face... when a user, like me, got the idea/clue and could run anything... and scream something like "eureka" and was thankfull

Our way cross few times, and in my requests, he could read between the lines (and sometimes, this is very hard), and even, when there was few "days", when there was a stop inside a conversation... it was , like a friendship, a good/friendly/harmonic conversation.. as there was never a pause inside...

I always knew, when i would have a problem -with this wonderfull OS- doesnt matter when... i could jump in, and ask him...

This days, it was again on the time, to ask for his help, cause i forgot so many things, and he knew this project -maybe better than the inside of his pockets....
and i wonder.. where is he... it s a kind of silence...

And than i got the sad/surprising news,
and it was a kind of flash, which went inside me... cause..
it/he makes me familiar to this community and this project..
and so i stayed few days speachless...
remebering me, how it all began, with the great ONE...
one of the first really userfriendly OS...
and the years, where time pass, and even when i upgrade, just a view inside the forum gave me help, without the need to ask...
(Only later on i had to ask, cause a lot of changes made it needed)...

I wouldnt imagin, how big the lose would be for the family....
when i feel this lose as big and tragic lose....

and i am still speachless...

Big Thx to him... and all the ppl. who was beside him, all the years,

It’s been a while since I have been active on the forum but I trust it’s not too late to add my sincere condolences to the family and many friends of Mark aka PCNetSpec. He was always helpful in the interactions I had with him in dealing with Peppermint “how to do” items. More than his knowledge which was tremendous, his spirit imparted to this community was so generous and genuine.  It made me not only want to use Peppermint but to also be a part of this kind of community.  I pray his dear ones are finding comfort and peace during these months following his passing.  May Marks spirit continue to guide those who are now endeavoring to give leadership to this project and may God bless...
