Title: Installed Peppermint OS a few months ago.. Now I cannot get into gui.
Post by: ghostyroasty on November 03, 2019, 08:36:36 am
I have a Z83-W I currently use for an Emby and Plex Media server that no longer goes into the gui, and I cannot input anything. I have errors on the screen which I have attached to the post. PMS and Emby still load and serve content, but I cannot update anything due to not being able to input anything.(http://adventuresofadad.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/input.jpg)

run:
Code: [Select]
sudo nano /etc/default/grubchange the line
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"to
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d"(that's a number ONE, not a lower case L after 'SVIDEO-')
hit Ctrl+X, then Enter to save the file and exit nano

then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grubthen reboot to test.

Away from home for a bit, it I would test.. but from trying several things before, I am unable to type anything in, well at least nothing appears on the screen while trying to type.

Try booting from a previous kernel.

Tried holding shift with no success and also tried tapping it also with no success.. I never reached any other menu, it always boots directly to the image shown on my original post.

Boot to the LiveuSB and select "Try Peppermint"

Once at the Live desktop, open a terminal and run the following commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo mount /dev/mmcblk0p2 /mntthen
Code: [Select]
for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; donethen
Code: [Select]
sudo chroot /mntthen
Code: [Select]
xed /mnt/etc/default/grubchange the line
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"to
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d"(that's a number ONE, not a lower case L after 'SVIDEO-')
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
update-grubThen hit Ctrl+D (to exit the chroot environment)

Then reboot without the LiveUSB.
(ie. shut down the PC .. remove the LiveUSB .. then fire up the PC)

In future, can you please copy and paste terminal output AS TEXT into this forum rather than taking a screenshot/photo .. responders can't copy/paste text from an image (making their job harder), and the text in an image isn't searchable, again making it harder for responders and denying future readers with the same issue searchable content on the forum.

The photo in your first post was acceptable (not in the GUI, so hard to copy/paste), but the second could have been copy/pasted as searchable text.
(so wherever POSSIBLE, please post AS TEXT)

Thanks in advance :)

Sorry, I wasn't even thinking about copying and pasting since I'm used to the machine being in the state it is currently in... I received the same error after rebooting. On the line that includes the command xed, I received a connection refused error, so I used sudo nano and saved the alterations that way.

Here is the error when using the xed command:
Code: [Select]
No protocol specified
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused

(xed:3306): Gtk-WARNING **: 12:18:31.786: cannot open display: :0.0

I did, and after restarting, the same error occurred.. it's not a huge loss if I just reinstall, as there were only two programs I would have to install.

Okay one last thing to try, let's run a file system check on the root partition...

Boot the LiveUSB .. open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo fsck /dev/mmcblk0p2then reboot without the LiveUSB.

I received the same error. A week or so ago, I went ahead and reinstalled the OS... I'm receiving the same errors again.
