Title: [SOLVED] Thumbnail Cache
Post by: 151tom on October 02, 2019, 03:53:43 pm
Hello Peppermint forums,

I was wondering which is the best method to clear the thumbnail cache that gathers over time.

rm -v -f ~/.cache/thumbnails/*/*.png ~/.thumbnails/*/*.png

rm -v -f ~/.cache/thumbnails/*/*/*.png ~/.thumbnails/*/*/*.png

Or

rm -rfv ~/.cache/thumbnails

Thanks

Pretty much ALL three will do the job.

Clear the Thumbnail Cache:  These 2 do it in 2 stages:

Code: [Select]
rm -v -f ~/.cache/thumbnails/*/*.png ~/.thumbnails/*/*.png
Code: [Select]
 rm -v -f ~/.cache/thumbnails/*/*/*.png ~/.thumbnails/*/*/*.png

The last one here does the entire job: (I am not sure where you came by the extra "v" that you used in your third code on your post but i think it is from "easy Linux" blog.) The one in my "User Submitted Tutorial" is minus the "v" and shows as, "rf",  NOT, "rfv", as you have shown in your previous entry.

Code: [Select]
rm -rf ~/.cache/thumbnails

TAKE NOTE: DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU REALLY MEAN IT!!!

The "asterik",  on the fourth entry I made:  (And this is where the "rfv" I think comes into play here):

Code: [Select]
 rm -rfv ~/.cache/thumbnails*

This will be the result of this code: You WILL remove the entire cache thumbnail directory with this!!!

Code: [Select]
removed directory '/home/The Omen/.cache/thumbnails'
You probably DO NOT want to remove directory.

NOTE: I dislike thumbnails, so i modify the entry for retention days of,  "thumbnails", in "dconf Editor" to zero.

After a few EDITS here, I think?, I have everything hopefully correct.

If im not correct for any reason, I HOPE that the more knowledgeable folks here will PLEASE correct me in any errors so i do not mistakenly give any bad advice.

Regards, The Omen.

Code: [Select]
rm -rfv ~/.cache/thumbnails
would be the simplest .. that directory will get automatically recreated anyway the very next time any thumbnails are generated.
(as will anything in ~/.cache)

@The Omen

the -v option just means 'verbose', so the command will return a full list of things being deleted.

Thank-you Mr. Greaves for the better understanding of how "that" particular command works with your explaination of the end result, where I thought that it would destroy that particualr directory.

My mentor was very right in having me join this forum to further my learning in Linux and staying current with the current version etc.

Warm and Respectful Regards, to both of you,
