Title: Well.... all.....I left..... :(
Post by: grafiksinc on June 05, 2019, 08:09:25 am
Good evening all,
I been contemplating how to say I left peppermint... :(  I been running peppermint since 7
Basically I had a few HDD's crash.. and I was at a cross roads....either reinstall Pep...9R at the time or hop closer to Debian...... :o

So I wrote all the things that irk me about Pep. and it was really short..
1. VLC was gone
2. ICE's pre installed links
Now I know I  can configure all this after install. .
3. Its too good....

My personal preference when  I decide to hop is... I hop....everything completely.
I am completely off pep now  ???

I know right.....what.....lol

So, where did I go.......debian....more specially the debian  net-install
It was not easy....let me say that... but it did fullfill that linux challenge I was looking for.
Since basically it comes with literally nothing and it does meet the very basic baseline I was looking for.

I did bring ICE with me though....never letting that go ;)

But the reason for this post is I just wanted to say thanks!! of all the linux communities I have participated in  this is the best. Pep is great and will always  be great. I left not because of any specific reason.  I just had this itch to get closer to the debian distro... I originally started there and I have always felt the need to get back to it.

All in all I will  keep watching you as you grow through  the years.  Keep up the good work!

Thanks again.   -- Grafiksinc

Just because you're using Debian doesn't mean you can't hang out with us in the Peppermint community. We're a stronger community when we don't all agree on every package and setup. Personally, I love the fragmentation everyone seems to write those cliickbait articles about.

Like you don't use Peppermint exclusively. Here's a rundown of my current systems.

Desktop

Laptop

Netbook

What josephd said :)

Specially the bit about "so called" fragmentation .. which I don't see as "fragmentation" as much as a strength of development model.

That would be cool, always good to hear where other distros may be doing something better/worse and where we may be able to improve (within our guiding ethos of course) :)

Well its been about nearly three months on Debian and its been good to me....
PPA's where such a convenience, at a times...LOL  but none the less I am content with Buster.. I like it.
I cant say I can offer any new ideas.....its like stepping back in time a bit but its cool....

I know everyone is different but with vanilla XFCE with thunar is a good fit for me.
That's about it. nothing extravagant but  yeah its Debian LOL  ;)

@grafiksinc: It isn't really a big switch.

I'm using Debian Buster and Peppermint 10, and while they look and behave almost the same, there are some subtle differences.

If I ever try something that is really different, it will either be OpenSuse or vanilla Arch, mainly for the learning experience. But so far, nothing that was not based on Debian or Ubuntu lasted longer than a week on any of my computers. ;)

But how can you live without our theming ?

Someone suggested on YT the other day that distros should satisfy a necessary, though possibly niche function (I do have to wonder though who gets to choose what equates to 'necessary' in that position ?) .. well I've decided one of our 'necessary niche functions' is to offer soothing red/white/dark-grey sanctuary in the wind swept desert of blue/grey (and the occasional green/grey) eye grit :))

[semi-sarcasm for those that may miss it ;)]

Debian / Ubuntu base / built Linux Distros work well on most all computers I've installed it on and yes there are going to be a few quirks here and there depending on the hardware in my experience.

If you're going for the full Debian experience than you must learn the Debian ways and don't expect a lot of help from certain Debian forums because certain Debian forums expect Debian users to learn the basics etc.

I like Debian based / built Linux distros as they are rock solid stable or at least the ones I use are.

All Linux Distros are good learning experience I'm always learning new stuff about Linux.

Guess I am an oddball, I just don't see the lure of bouncing around other distributions when Peppermint works so well?!?

Here, Here Spence. I used to be hopper and the nightmare of installing nearly every other day other OSES, setting them up, then not feeling it something not right with it. Now so happy to have given that up, but still have the occasional look at other Ubuntu derivatives, or the occasional Arch system. No matter what though I always come back to Peppermint.  ;D

Yeah I hear you guys I really do.....it was not hoppertitus  that got me LOL  :D
I am sure we all have our own  experiences   with how we got to linux.
Mine started with Ubuntu  way back in 2006 then moved to Mint with the gnome drama....
I stayed with Mint until they started focusing on Cinnamon(I just grew tired of it)  finally I left Mint in 2016 and found Pep. 7 :-*

Why i left.....my hard drive crashed....LOL  ;) (It was 15 yrs) old
I really had no real reason to leave pep other than it was an opportunity.

I took the Network install from a minimal CD (https://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/) route on Debian LOL

Believe me... I have had my  experiences with bad forum .....folk if you will   :(...... Pep has the best by far forum base to me..
With that said.... I sort of stay away from the deb forums....... have not really needed to use them anyway.

but...Looking back if I had to say the few things that were really starting to bother me about pep ....Now.... this is personal preference..... ;)....but

That was it... petty I know... again it was not the cause of the move.

I did bring Ice with me of course ..LOL

That's why we have linux.... right... freedom of choice....no matter....

Hi grafiksinc,

I can understand your personal prefs being ... well ... personal !!  ;D I have my little personal fetishes as well: I prefer spaceFM over nemo, but I must admit that I use nemo almost as much as spaceFM  :-\ I know that doesn't make much sense ... but that's the way I do it.  :P I also only use medit as my text editor. Why? It just works for me and is very quick.

And as for the app stores: I never use any of them and just delete them. But I use synaptic more than the CLI for package management.

Then there is the desktop. The stock one is really good. But (personal preferences again!) I just like to keep things light and minimal and use JWM, awesome and fluxbox more than the stock desktop. Of course they take some time to set up when a new Peppermint release gets installed, but I don't mind that. And it keeps my wife happy that I use my spare time setting those up rather than hopelessly chasing younger skirts!  :D Of course, that might change (the hopeless part, I mean) if I ever meet up with VinDSL in Vegas one of these days ...  :o

But, after all has been said and done, I stay here because of the following: Peppermint works better for me than anything else I have tested, bar none!  ;) I also like the light-weight mix of components; of course, the forum also holds me here!! A terrific bunch of people!!  8)

Thanks for showing up again. It was nice to hear from you.

Regards,

-- Slim

Yup, love this forum .. keeps me sane (ish) :)

Nemo is IMHO the best file manager out there, and the two software managers were kind of forced on us because mintinstall doesn't list snaps, and gnome-software doesn't list the peppermint-pack (metapackages) ::)

But at the end of the day, defaults are just that "defaults" .. they can be changed ;)
