Title: Opera only prints to PDF (SOLVED)
Post by: kloos on May 06, 2019, 05:49:35 am
Hi all,

The title pretty much says it all.  If I want to print from Opera then I have to save it as a PDF, then load the PDF and then I can print from that with no problems.  But not directly from Opera.  Even if I select "use system dialogue" it only lets me chose to file.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Martin.

So in Opera if you hit Ctrl+P (to get the print dialog)

Then in the "Destination" drop menu select "See more..."

What is listed there ?

Just says "save as PDF" there.
I am running the release version of Opera btw and not a beta version.

How did you install Opera .. because according to your output it's not installed ?
(and AFAIK the latest version of Opera is 60.0.3255.83)

AFAIK the latest version of Opera is 60.0.3255.83

Depends on the version - Opera makes several available.

The two (2) vers I'm running are fully updated:

Code: [Select]
╭─vindsl@Boogaloo-6 ~
╰─$ dpkg -l | grep opera-
ii  opera-beta                                        60.0.3255.79                                amd64        Fast, secure, easy-to-use web browser
ii  opera-stable                                      60.0.3255.83                                amd64        Fast, secure, easy-to-use web browser

but in either case
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep opera
should return output :-\
(and if it's not installed via the repos, it won't be getting updated .. and is likely not integrated into the system properly)

Right.

BTW, here's what I use...  ;)

Code: [Select]
╭─vindsl@Boogaloo-6 ~
╰─$ grep opera -r --include '*.list' /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera-stable.list:deb https://deb.opera.com/opera-stable/ stable non-free #Opera Browser (final releases)
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera-beta.list:deb https://deb.opera.com/opera-beta/ stable non-free #Opera Browser (final releases)
╭─vindsl@Boogaloo-6 ~
╰─$

I honestly can't remember how I installed it.  I would have thought that I would have used the repos as I don't like to complicate things.  I can't see why I would have downloaded a file from their website unless it wasn't available internally.  I use it on my other laptop and it works fine.

Okay, can we have the output from VinDSL's command above
Code: [Select]
grep opera -r --include '*.list' /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
and
Code: [Select]
ls -l /usr/bin/opera

First one shows nothing.

Second one shows
ls: cannot access '/usr/bin/opera': No such file or directory

If I go into the menu option "System - Software" and search for Opera.  It shows the 3 version, beta, developer and the release version.  Against the release version it says "installed".  So that must be where I got it from.

Ahh .. it looks likke you have the flatpak or snap version installed, let's get rid of that and install the .deb version (that I and VinDSL have).

What's the output from
Code: [Select]
flatpak list
and
Code: [Select]
snap list

Flatpak listed nothing

snap listed the following:

Okay let's try removing the opera snap, and installing it as a .deb

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo snap remove opera
now run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo xed /etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera-stable.list
and when a blank file opens, make it read
Code: [Select]
# This file makes sure that Opera Browser is kept up-to-date
# as part of regular system upgrades

deb https://deb.opera.com/opera-stable/ stable non-free #Opera Browser (final releases)
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
wget -qO- https://deb.opera.com/archive.key | sudo apt-key add -
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install opera-stable
Now see if Opera is in the main menu at

Menu > Internet > Opera

and test it works.

@PCNetSpec you are amazing.  The new version of Opera is working as expected, in the menu and printing beautifully.

One tiny little point... ??? You failed to suggest that I should copy the instructions, which I was viewing on Opera, before un-installing it!!! :o
Luckily it did occur to me and I copied them to a text file first  ;D

I am interested to know how come the download is available from the Software rep if it isn't fully supported.  What about Thunderbird which I installed the same way,  Now I think about it that does keep trying to update but it tells me that I don't have the access to update it.

snap's and flatpak's are a new way of installing software .. they are completely isolated from the rest of the system (containerised code and libraries if you will).

Attempting to leave the politics aside (my views on that is well publicised)...

This has it's benefits, such as security via sandboxing, the ability to run multiple versions, lack of library conflicts, etc.

They also have their downsides .. that same containerisation stops them interacting well with other parts of the system such as - they don't pick up the system themes, and may not work well with things like the printing subsystems., etc.
(it all kinda depends on the level of containerisation chosen by the app developer)

The technology is kinda in its infancy, so our advice for now would be to steer clear of snaps and flatpaks where possible and stick to the .deb versions of software .. the problem is, because some software is now ONLY being released as a snap/flatpak we had no real option other than to offer the ability to install them, but as I said WHERE POSSIBLE we'd advise sticking to .deb's at least until snap/flatpak matures as a technology.

Thanks.  I'll mark this as complete for now and open another ticket "if" I need too.
