Title: I'm done dualbooting Win10 & Peppermint 9R [reSOLVED]
Post by: spence on March 06, 2019, 01:22:28 pm
After several failed attempts to get Win10 to finish the latest update process, I re-evalated my need for Win10. 99% of my computer time is spent in whatever the current & latest version our Lord PCNetSpec has unleashed for our work & pleasure online. I only ever kept Microsloth installed as it helped me triage my Mom's laptop, which she seems to have shelved permanently. Thus I no longer have a use case.

 ;)

Three times now after deleting all partitions and reformatting all the newly created ones I get a failed to install grub error message, even though I am selecting the primary ssd drive for grub installation.

whelp my 4th attempt at installation appeared to complete properly, yet upon reboot I was once again met with an error: BOOTMGR IS MISSING. The only change I had made during this effort was choosing the /boot partition for grub install, instead of the nvme drive itself as that failed the previous 3 times.

For installation attempt 5, I'mma gonna let the rewrite entire disk option do the work for me since I have zero plans to dual boot anything else. Normally Ilike to set up my own partitions but something I am no doubt forgetting to do is wasting my afternoon whilst trying to get a fresh install

i run 2 separate systems rather than dual boot, my windows pc hardly ever gets used as its ancient and only use it for FL Studio. debian, pep or whatever distro im on that day does the rest :)

Coincidentally (kinda) I just had to configure up a dual-boot setup on my sons Macbook Pro for FL Studio.

Well, you're definitely more patient than I am. After the second or third attempt, there would have been much cussing, followed by me starting to explore the viability of running my Windows only software with WINE.

Oh don't be fooled @scifidude79 ... there was much much cussing... I think I scared the other half. I am suspecting my ASRock motherboard was somehow resisting the departure of Win10? Is that possible? For I'd deleted all partitions and recreate different sized ones on the first 4 attempts, yet sudo update-grub kept reinserting a  Windows entry!?!

It's something to do with the GPT partition table. I deleted everything on one of my drives, I even finally used a Linux installer to delete a partition that GParted hadn't found. Yet, UEFI still showed an Ubuntu boot entry on this drive and attempting to boot it resorted in a GRUB Rescue message. So, somehow, GRUB was still partially on an allegedly empty drive. You probably had something similar going on with your Windows drive.

The actual bootloaders and partitions are stored on the HDD/SSD .. but most UEFI BIOS's also store a list of discovered OS's in NVRAM (so you can choose a boot order, etc.)

Normally this is automatically cleared when the partition and bootloader are deleted on the drive .. but not always, sometimes you may need to clear the entries manually.

I'm as lazy as the next guy, and I use Grub Customizer for doing stuff like this: https://goo.gl/hhrZ8d

I multi-boot this machine with UEFI/Secure Boot enabled, and rearranging the boot order in GRUB gets a little dicey.

There's a bit of a learning curve involved with using Grub Customizer, but once one gets used to it, it sure makes changing the boot order easy - not to mention removing the cruft. I usually get it, the way I want it, on the first try, these days.

Here's how my setup looks in Grub Customizer:

Just saying...

Reaper now supports Linux (and I like it a lot better)
