Title: shutdown button on desktop
Post by: opiumpoetry on February 27, 2019, 09:38:02 pm
Found this little article on how to create a single-click shutdown button situated on the desktop. I tried it and it works. https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1113

I just create a launcher with the peppermint-logout command. I did one before and my wife would always seem to hit it and shut down the system while she was doing something.

That's why it isn't there in the first place  ;)

Yep, I've never really understood why people want either a desktop icon or a panel item to shut down .. seems to be an accident waiting to happen to me, and a waste of panel/desktop space (through duplication) .. but each to their own right :)

i have the actions buttons added to mine but iconified then set it up so only Log Out.. is selected. give you the choice to cancel or shutdown etc if accidentally hit

The action buttons on my panel only had logout working, nothing else. And how do you shutdown a pc without a button? Just use the power button on the keyboard? Isn't that bad for the pc?

Hi Reddi-eng,

See the first message in this thread. It was not really a question, but more a statement about how to accomplish something (together with a link to the instructions for doing it). The other messages were mostly about the pros and cons of doing it.

And BTW: welcome to Peppermint and the forum.

Regards,

There's a better solution if you really want a shutdown icon on the desktop .. or would you prefer it on the panel ?

Now we're in the systemd era I'd suggest:-
Code: [Select]
systemctl poweroffand/or
Code: [Select]
systemctl rebootis MUCH preferable to messing around the permissions of the:-
Code: [Select]
/sbin/shutdownutility, as prompted by the link in the first post here.

Neither of those require root permission, or hacking the permissions of /sbin/shutdown

Actually, some file managers allow you to add desktop icons to the panel, like Thunar, I think. I did that and yes, it looks better on the panel than on the desktop.

You don't require Thunar (or any other file manager) to add a launcher to the xfce4-panel .. you can right-click ANY launcher in the main menu and select "Add to Panel" .. so really all you need to do is create a properly formatted .desktop file and have it in one of the correct directories, so it shows in the main menu.

There is even a way you add a launcher DIRECTLY to the panel, that contains your own command and icon.
