Title: Welcome to the new Forum!
Post by: shane on March 12, 2014, 01:30:07 pm
Hello everyone and welcome to the new forum. The old site at PeppermintOS.net is still there as an archive and reference and will be maintained as such.

Please enjoy the new space and we're always here for your suggestions and comments.

Cheers to all

Shane

Thanks for the welcome...  :)
I would like to say after perusing this board over this last few days that I like the old board much better.
Some things I can't seem to find over here are the links that show me new posts and the links that show me my posts.
Also I must say this, and I am sorry if it offends anyone, but the jigsaw puzzles i have to put together to make a or edit a post are bit much, don't ya all think?
anyhow Here's looking to the future....   :D

We're still ironing out some details and the puzzle captchas only affect the first few posts (I think 5, but don't quote me on that). There are a number of reasons for the switch that come down to both usability and maintenance (the old forum is rather difficult to maintain at this point). In a few weeks, all the details should be well documented.

Sounds good...  thanks for the speedy reply...  :)
Can I make a suggestion?
Is there anything you can do about the white background, it is kinda hard on the old eyes, the old board was tan and much easier on the eyes...  :)

There's a "Posts" link at the top of every page on the toolbar .. hover your mouse over that.

And if you want to see all a particular users posts .. view their profile summary by clicking on their name .. then select the  "Show Posts" item in the left hand panel.

"I like the old one better" .. sounds akin to "Linux is harder than Windows" to me ;)

This forum has everything the old one did, and then some .. just a case of getting used to a new way of doing things .. give it a chance and I'm sure you'll come to like it :)

The KeyCAPTCHA (jigsaw puzzles) should only be for the first 5 postings.

It is an anti-bot/spam measure to stop automated sign ups to the forum .. and it's (so far) an extremely effective one .. automated account creation bots have become sophisticated enough to read text captcha's unless they're set so difficult that humans have problems with them, but they still have MAJOR problems solving simple graphical logic puzzles.

If you find you're still getting the KeyCAPTCHA puzzles after 5 posting/PM's please let me know.

I can adjust the CSS to whatever extent I want, but I'm going to wait a little while until we have a bit more feedback before making any visual changes.

rjm65 makes a good point.  The bright background is a bit tough on the eyes, especially for the older people on the forum.  Not me, of course....I was thinking of that guy from across the pond...

I'm only 49 and I feel old...  LOL   :)

Hey, leave my eyes outa this, use your own eyes for your argument ;),  .. I'm happy with it the way it is, but have no problem either way really.

If I remember tomorrow, I'll try and screw with the CSS and bring the brightness level down just a touch. The operative statement there is "If I remember tomorrow" which is somewhat debatable at this point.  ;)

Nice new forum guys - very shiny  8)!  I do have to make a comment as a partially sighted person.  Although the forum is really cool looking, it is a bit vicious on the eyes.  I agree with rjm65.  The old website's colour tone was much easier on the eyes, especially ones as decrepit as mine   :).

It's like everything else, everybody tends to dislike change, but give it a few weeks and then the "old" forum style will be forgotten. Tend to agree though about the background and I admit to being a "senior  citizen".

I don't dislike change, I am just used to being able to click on the two links the old forum had, one showed me all new posts the other my own posts it made it easier to find things, I am playing on this new forum and I can't seem to get it to do those things for me...
As far as the white background goes it seems I am not the only having eye issues with the white, it is awfully bright...
as I see you are in agreement with that also...  :)

So you don't dislike change, but you're unhappy because it's different ?

All new posts .. is there not a "Posts" link in the red bar at the top of this page ? .. and if you hover your mouse over it, does it not display a drop menu with "New Unread" etc. ?

Now for your (or anyone else's) posts .. click on your name anywhere on this forum, and you'll be taken to your profile summary .. there is a link in the left panel "Show Posts" that will show all your posts.

I explained al this above .. what are you having difficulty with ?

None at all sir...  no problems here except the button does not work....
when I click the posts button and click new Unread i get nothing new and unread....  then i click main forum and I find you did have a new post right here that I am replying too right now..... so my point is being it is not working for me.... Every time i click it get nothing is new....  sorry to be honest, but if it worked i would not have a problem with this forum at all, every forum I am on is different in its own way, but almost all of them have those two links to show new posts and show your own posts... This forum don't seem to have those links and it is taking some getting used too, I must admit but I don't dislike the change at all...  I am not unhappy either, I am just trying to figure it all out if ya catch my drift, learning curve so to speak....

Now when it does say no unread there is a bunch of links at bottom but I can't click them they are inactive and one of those links is topics I posted in...
see screen shot....

New would mean since your last visit .. but you were still here when I posted that .. try "All Unread" or "Recents".
(or log off and come back again ?)

[EDIT]

I've just checked, and ll the "Posts" submenu items work as expected in my "regular user" test account.

Or just wait a bit and refresh, I just went to the door and took care of a customer and came back and clicked it and it worked this time even though I was not logged off....  LOL   Like I said before it's a learning curve till we get used to the way it works....   :D
Why though are all those links underneath not active though?  It would be nice if they were active....
Hmmm that is funny that they don't work on my account could it be an adblocker thing in firefox?

The ones in the screen shot up above, there are like 5 links in there for hot topics, normal topics, topics you posted in,etc...

HAHAHA Whoops sorry, I just figured out that is just telling me what the icons mean, they are not links after all...  LOL     :D

Like I said originally, change takes a bit of getting used to, we will get used to it, just give the new forum a bit of time, the good thing is that the one thing that is unchanged is the level of help from  Mark, Mac and the other guys who really know their stuff and help out those like me who blunder along in the dark! Many thanks Guys,

g'morning, releived to hear the captchas will go away... as my old eyes can't always make out whats in the little teeny tiny photos... white doesn't bother me... but folks may have options within their browsers to change background colors... chromium doesn't... gonna go check if Seamonkey will give me a grey...

It's nice to be leaving behind all the crufty posts and tutorials which give instructions and refer to things that don't quite apply to PeppermintOS4 ...

Change is good, progress... not always

As I suspected... Seamonkey, and thus most likely Firefox allows the user to set their preferred back ground colors overiding all the webpage's specified color pallette... i tend to select greys...

of course as soon I got back in from walking the dog... Kendall mentions he's altering the CSS... so i opened Chromium and yes... it's a more subtle white... all the link buttons in the above left appear in shades for grey for me... in both my browsers...

I briefly looked for a simple way to import user accounts but it ended up being more hassle and effort than I really cared to contribute. Not trying to be lazy or anything, I just have a lot of things going on. Anyway, it required exporting the database, truncating a ton of tables, scrubbing out the spam accounts, and a bunch more stuff. Ultimately I figured it would be better in the long run to just leave everything.

I think there's something to be said for a fresh start, as well.  The old forum isn't going anywhere so those numbers are safe.  Yes?  No?   :)

Correct. The old forum will be switched to "read only" and left in place as a reference.

I think I have to agree with that otherwise I think the site is great, I'm getting used to it already, one thing I would like to see implemented if possible is a "Go Up" button at the bottom of each page it saves wear on my mouse scroller :)

There are 2 mods for this feature, but both appear to be broken for this version of SMF, They both gave errors on installation (even if I emulate a version that allows them to install), so I went no further and removed them .. might be a starting point though.

Done :)

"Go Up" and "Go Down" links at bottom/top of pages.

I wish you'd pointed out we have it on the linux.co.uk forum .. turns out SMF has this out of the box, II found it hiding in the settings.

Hello, everyone.

I wasn't really sure where to post this (and I hope you don't get upset at me for reviving an old thread). I'm new to Peppermint OS and I just wanted to introduce myself. I've been messing around with Linux for around eight months now (switching between various distros, mostly favoring Ubuntu Gnome and Elementary OS). I stumbled upon a review of Peppermint version 4 online a few weeks ago, and it sounded great (the Ice program is especially interesting). I did some more reading and apparently version 5 is being released soon, so I thought I'd join the community along with trying out Peppermint 5 once it's available.

So, yeah. My name's Zach, it's nice to meet all of you.

You won't have long to wait .. Peppermint 5 is due out today some time :)

Hi Zach

Nice to meet you too, by the sound of it you already know your way around Linux but if you have any questions or problems don't be afraid to post on the forum, there are quite a few smart guys here (myself not included) always willing to help out

As Mark said Peppermint 5 is due for release today so if you decide to install it and run it for a while we would welcome any comments or suggestions you might have.
