Title: Severe screen flickering when laptop lid is opened. [SOLVED]
Post by: AndyInMokum on October 30, 2018, 02:38:02 am
Hi all, how's it going  :)?  I've just installed Peppermint 9 64-bit to this HP 6930p Elitebook.  It runs almost perfectly too.  The problem I'm having, is severe screen flickering when the laptop lid is opened.  The power management while plugged in, is set to Switch off display when the lid is closed.  I've tried disabling the Desktop Effects.  This makes no difference.  I've tried using the Mate Power Manager instead of the XFCE4 Power Manager.  That also made no difference.  Ctrl+Alt+F2 followed by, Ctrl+Alt+F7 brings X back to normal.

Previously, I had Xubuntu 18.04 LTS installed.  The identical flickering screen issues were present with this installation too.  I just never got around to trouble shooting it.  I swapped this machine to Peppermint 9, simply because it's more refined and much quicker.  Any help is much appreciated  ;).  The machine's specs are below:

you dont go in to detail about what type of flickering you are experiencing but first things to try are probably changing your monitors refresh rate and maybe resolution ....  could also be a loose of bad LVDS cable the cable from the monitor to the mainboard ... that's just my best guesses .. im sure someone with more knowledge can give you more insight

I'd play around with the DPMS settings (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Display_Power_Management_Signaling), Andy.

Over the years, with everything from CRTs, LEDs, desktops, laptops, et cetera - blanking always works the best for me.

It'd be interesting to know if an 18.10 distro still does this .. maybe Xubuntu 18.10

I'm downloading it as I type.  We'll soon find out  ;).

Xubuntu 18.10 has been fully installed to a partition on this machine.  The exact same power management setting are being used as in Peppermint 9.   There is no screen flickering when opening the laptop lid  ;).  The problem must be a kernel issue.

Hi Andy, with my Samsung laptop I also get flickering but only when I'm on battery power. Once I plug in the power cord, the flickering disappears. I may have to partition this harddrive and check out Xubuntu 18.10.

So, why not trying another kernel then? 4.19.0 is running fine on my PM7 machine  ;)

I think I'll try this first pin before I make changes to my harddrive.

Okay now I'm confused, I tried to install 4.19.0, ran sudo update-grub and figured since I'm testing the monitor flicker, I would start up without the power cord being plugged in. So I immediately got a kernel panic. Powered down and rebooted into 4.15 and forgot that I still had the power cord unplugged, well no flickering. I reinstalled 4.19, rebooted and I'm still running without the power cord plugged in and no flickering. 4.19 is running good but I think I lost a couple of seconds on bootup. Anyway, I'm not sure my flickering was a kernel problem or not.

Hi guys thanks for all the responses.  I haven't manually installed a kernel since either Pep 5 or Pep 6.  Could someone run me through the process again.  Many thanks  ;).

Hi Andy,
As you saw from alynur, it might not be the kernel. But, I would give it a shot.
Although, instructions on "how to replace the kernel" should probably not be attempted by everybody. So, I've PM'd you the answer instead of publishing it here  ;)

Hi Andy

Use UKUU - it's in the Repo's...

Just revert to nouveau drivers first before upgrading Kernel.  Re-install any proprietary drivers after

As you have Intel graphics there's no need to switch back to nouveau (only users using the proprietary nvidia graphics drivers NEED to do this PRIOR to installing a different kernel series) .. but yeah installing ukuu would probably be the easiest way to upgrade the kernel.

Manual installation

Assuming you want the 4.19 kernel from the Ubuntu kernel PPA) download these files and put them in a folder called say kernel-419 in your home folder
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.19/linux-headers-4.19.0-041900_4.19.0-041900.201810221809_all.deb
and
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.19/linux-headers-4.19.0-041900-generic_4.19.0-041900.201810221809_amd64.deb
and
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.19/linux-image-unsigned-4.19.0-041900-generic_4.19.0-041900.201810221809_amd64.deb
and
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.19/linux-modules-4.19.0-041900-generic_4.19.0-041900.201810221809_amd64.deb
then run:
Code: [Select]
cd ~/kernel-419
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ./*.deb
then reboot.

Note:- Expect to see messages about missing firmware for amdgpu .. that is not a problem ;)

To UNDO

To REMOVE that kernel
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-4.19.0-041900 linux-headers-4.19.0-041900-generic linux-image-unsigned-4.19.0-041900-generic linux-modules-4.19.0-041900-generic
then reboot.

BTW, there's no guarantee this will work on its own .. the problem could just as easily be with the rest of the graphics stack (intel xorg drivers and/or mesa version).

And considering this kernel will NOT automatically receive security updates, you may be better served just waiting for the 18.04 HWE to be released .. but your call, can't hurt to experiment I guess, it's all undoable.

Cheers guys.  I installed UKUU.  It's pretty nifty tool.  I'd never hear of it before, thanks Zeb, I like it ;).  I tried installing the latest v4.18 kernel using UKUU.  This is the kernel Xubuntu 18.10 is using.  It installed like a charm.  I then deleted the my test Xubuntu 18.10 partition.  This messed up GRUB.  It throws up all kind of errors at boot.  I can't specific about them because they display for a picosecond then they're gone.  I've tried using chroot from a Live Session to reinstall it.  Even that is throwing up errors.  I think I'm going to reformat the drive and start again.  I'll call this one SOLVED.  Again, thanks for all the help and advice guys  ;) .

So did the 4.18 kernel stop the flickering in Peppermint 9 ?

Oh yes, it worked a treat.  There's no hint of a flicker  ;).  I wish I'd left the Xubuntu partition intact though.  Peppermint 9 is working great on this machine.  It's just GRUB with all the errors and warnings.  I figured if I can't fix it by reinstalling it using chroot, a fresh, full install is the safest route to achieve a stable installation  ;).
