Title: Anyone ever installed Peppermint on a Apple Power Macintosh G5 2.0 DP (PCI) ?
Post by: LegerD on August 18, 2018, 12:36:41 pm
Hi Folks,

its me again, the guy that refurbishes donated HW for social projects.
Today I got my hand on this machine:

Power Macintosh G5 2.0 DP (PCI) with the following specs:
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g5/specs/powermac_g5_2.0_dp_pci.html

It supports maximum OSX 10.5.8 which is outdated and therefore a security risk.
so ....

by checking at Distrowatch I learned that PowerPC Cpu support is still supported by Ubuntu 16.04 LTS until End of Life 2021-04
https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=ubuntu

My beloved Peppermint OS is based on Ubuntu, so my natural question is:

Will Peppermint OS run on that machine?
And which Peppermint version was based on 16.04, please?

I have just finished cleaning the machine from all the dust and spilled coffee on that beloved heavy duty carefully designed full aluminium case piece of computer history from 2005 and I am longing to see it run again.
so @PCNetSpec have YOU heard about Apple G5 Experiences with Peppermint?

No, sorry .. there ii no PowerPC port of Peppermint.

You can't just install stock Ubuntu .. you have to specifically get the PowerPC port.

wow PCNetSpec you are SO FAST! ;)

THX for the suggestion.
So I will have to stick with stock Ubuntu PowerPC Port *snief*

Ok, Thank you for your reply anyway ;-)

Cheers from Germany!
