Title: Avast Pulls Latest Version of CrapCleaner Following User Outrage
Post by: VinDSL on August 05, 2018, 01:09:54 pm
I've been using this utility on winders machines for years, and now my Android phone.

Been watching the uproar build, for the past week.  ;D

Quote
Piriform, the maker of CCleaner, has pulled v5.45 of its suite from the website after users expressed concerns over the privacy changes in the application, the company, which was acquired by Avast last year, said. In v5.45, the company made it impossible to disable "active monitoring", and the privacy settings had been removed for free customers. Additionally, as BetaNews reported earlier this week, Avast also made it impossible for users to quit the software. Addressing these concerns, Avast said, "Today we have removed v5.45 and reverted to v5.44 as the main download for CCleaner while we work on a new version with several key improvements." The company added.

According to stats shared by the company, CCleaner has been downloaded over two billion times. In a week, it is estimated to see five million downloads.

When are these companies going to learn that people like privacy? Just because someone doesn't pay for software, that doesn't mean they should be treated badly and have no rights.

In my opinion, as with anything to do with windoz, you might get what you pay for.

That's because it doesn't affect you. Yet. However, say a company that sees this sort of model decides it's a good thing, and they just happen to be a company that makes software that you use in Linux. After all, this sort of thing isn't only possible in Windows. Bad ideas tend to be the ones that companies latch onto. So, I think "you get what you pay for" isn't necessarily the best attitude to have, when any free proprietary software manufacturer can put whatever they want in their code.

It's the crap cleaner, not the BS cleaner. ;)

I'd actually like Windows a bit better if I could delete programs I don't use. Namely, their programs. (Edge, etc.) I'm too spoiled by Linux and that "I don't like the browser it came with, so I'm gonna remove it and install another one" style of doing things.

They're gonna need some slotted Scalextric track for a runway :)

In fact here's the new 'compact design' runway for it
(bear in mind this was the initial design, before they added the speed bumps)
