Title: console-kit-daemon.service
Post by: Slim.Fatz on August 04, 2018, 04:53:21 am
Hi Peppermint-Users,

I have been looking at this service

Code: [Select]
console-kit-daemon.service
and what it does. It seems to be needed if you are running a graphical desktop (but not needed if you run, for example, a server without a graphical login to a desktop).

Fine.

However, in my readings I also have found this service (which is present and used in PeppermintOS):

Code: [Select]
systemd-logind.service
which seems to be doing the same things (and perhaps some more) as the console-kit-daemon. So, my question is: can I safely disable and even mask console-kit-daemon ??  :-\

I would simply try it out, but if I cannot login then I am not sure what to do -- perhaps login to a console and run

Code: [Select]
sudo systemctl unmask console-kit-daemon.service
followed by

Code: [Select]
sudo systemctl enable console-kit-daemon.service
to restore things again?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.  ;)

Regards,

Hi Slim,
console-kit is an authentication service  as is elogind included in systemd.
I use console-kit2 on Void, since there's no systemd there. elogind is also offerered as an option, but I prefer console-kit.

I don't know why both are present in Peppermint, as in theory you only need one? Actually, in practice also... I only have console-kit on Void and do my best to stay away from elogind. Although, on Peppermint that would be impossible because elogind is a part of systemd.

Maybe, PCNetSpec will come by and explain why Peppermint uses both ;)

Hi pin,

I forgot to mention that this is on a machine with Peppermint 7 & also on one with Peppermint 8. On my box with Peppermint 9 the service

Code: [Select]
console-kit-daemon.service
is not present. Perhaps a hint that it is not needed on the other two either?  ;)

Well, I would like to hear what Mark has to say. Maybe the DM needs console-kit?? If I remember correctly that has changed in PM9.
Otherwise, try removing it and before saying Yes, see if it breaks something  ;D

Can't currently answer this .. it's not something I installed so I assume it's part of the base Lubuntu .. as soon as my back is better and I have time I'll test it out for ya in a VM.

For now I'll flag this topic "unread" so I don't forget.

Hi PCNetSpec,

Thank you for replying -- but there is no need to get a quick answer here! Get your back in a healthy state again, catch up on stuff that you had to put on hold and only then (and if you have time) try it out in a VM.

Get well soon, mate!  ;) :-* :P
